Over 5,000 points for 4 years of high school, not counting 8th grade. I agree--lots of games, probably lots of minutes, and probably weak competition. Regardless, 5,000 points is a LOT. I'm not sure I know of anyone else who had 4,000 points.

It's a LOT, indeed. She did play for a small school, in the second smallest of six divisions in Mississippi. They lost their first round playoff game this year by 66 points. I guess she doesn't have a younger sister.

Christyn Williams scored 36 points as CAC won its regional title Saturday (2/24).

CAC moves on to the state tourney which begins Thursday.

Highlights include a snazzy little turnaround shot in the post:

The post up was nice. Very impressive range on a couple of those jumper. Those kind of shots are going to be open in the UCONN offense and with Kia graduating and AEH transferring Huskies will need someone to knock those down at a reliable clip.

Do those of you who have watched Williams play this season think she the defensive mechanics to earn much playing time early in her freshman season? She seems to be standing straight up and flat footed instead of getting in a proper defensive position. You all will know better than I do.

That is a very good question. My answer would be a firm "maybe". All of the highlight videos of Christyn indicate she is a gifted offensive player. Like many astute UCONN fans you know that her ability to play major minutes or start eventually will be less dependent on offense (see Kia Nurse vs Saniya). Christyn has some tools, a background, and the recognition that her ability to play defense will get her on the floor at UCONN sooner. The tools include quickness, a solidly built frame and the ability to be ambidextrous. Her background includes growing up a soccer and softball player which are especially useful for quick feet, hand eye coordination & anticipating and reacting to the action before it happens. In one of her most recent interviews Christyn stated that needed to become "a lockdown defender" at the college level. Christyn gets it and we can check off that "recognition" box.
Having said all this, it may not matter because of the composition of the UCONN roster in Christyn's first year. Geno has been on the record already by saying he needs another guard to morph into a contributor. Next year the team loses Kia Nurse (a 4 year starter) to graduation. So while Christyn might not be the defender that Geno wants her to be on day 1 (what Freshmen really is) she may still get major minutes because....... she is more of an offensive threat than all the other players contending at the guard position- which in reality only includes Mikayla and Molly. Ironically Molly has the same background and tools as Christyn, but Molly has been an ineffective ball handler and a reluctant shooter. Mikayla has a track background which is probably more useful for basketball than Soccer and softball, but she has thus far been an unreliable shooter. You can't have a reluctant or unreliable shooter on the floor for UCONN, Christyn Williams does not appear to be either reluctant or unreliable . My guess is "maybe" Christyn will be part of the regular rotation next year , average 18-20 minutes per game and play adequate defense in her Freshmen year and get better over time-just like many UCONN players before her.

My biggest concern about Coombs going forward. Will she ever become a reliable shooter? Looking at her shooting motion I'm skeptical.

Great post, btw.

hopefully Coombs will improve on those shooting mechanics and score in transition in the meantime.........she's way too talented on the defensive end not to see the court next season.........

Another heart-breaker for Olivia Nelson-Ododa on Tuesday. Winder-Barrow lost its state quarterfinal 68-67 in overtime to #1 ranked LoveJoy.

Nelson-Ododa fouled out late in overtime but not before putting up these numbers:

24 points, 19 rebounds, 10 blocks, 3 assists

Nelson-Ododa was named Athens Banner-Herald athlete of the week:

As a freshman, Nelson-Ododa averaged 13.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as the Bulldoggs posted their first winning season in six years.

As a sophomore, Nelson-Ododa led Winder-Barrow to the Class 6A state finals, averaging a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds a game. At the conclusion of the season she earned Co-Player of the Year honors from the Banner-Herald.

And as a junior, her season ended early with a knee injury, and she finished up averaging 16.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.7 blocks a night.

This season, Nelson-Ododa – despite often drawing triple-team coverage – has averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and two steals per outing as the Bulldogs have gone 22-4 overall with a 9-1 Region 8-6A record, winning the region the region championship for the second consecutive year, a first at Winder-Barrow.

Nelson-Ododa has also made this a season to remember by signing to play at UConn.

Tough loss for Liv. I’m liking the post, despite the fact that her team lost, because she put up a triple-double and concluded an outstanding career.

I recall a precocious freshman in Georgia about 14 years ago whose team lost in the state championship game. She went over to the disappointed fans in the stands and promised them that it would not happen again while she was there. Three years later, 3-time state champion Maya Moore made good on the last part of her promise.

From reading Sluconn's reports and analysis, it seems UConn will welcome a couple of excellent prospects to Storrs, next season. Given that over the course of the following 400 days five terrific UConn players will bid adieu to college basketball, the Huskies will need them and more to maintain their position as the sport's elite program.

Getting to the top took a decade but staying there seems to be a never-ending challenge.

Congrats to Christyn and ONO. Well deserved honors! I have a question regarding Christyn. I LOVE the hair - but does UCONN have any restrictions on how "big" it can be? Will CD require it to be put into a bun or something? Gotta admit I'd love to see the 'fro bobbing all over the court as she terrorizes opposing teams with her offense and defense! Plus, she'd be super easy to recognize.

I can always find CWill in the game videos by her hair. That and the left-handed shots that always go in.

If anyone knows the “hidden ball trick” from baseball, I wonder if CWill could pull it off in basketball. ;)

Williams is rocking what is called Natural hair, it just happens to look high because of where she wears her ponytail. While the Afro puff is a timeless hairstyle, it seems to be making a comeback the last year and a half, I don’t think it will be an issue, but maybe she will be asked to move it down sorta like Gabby will wear her ponytail at times. Williams wants to be legendary, one day she’ll have little girls everywhere rocking Afro puffs and wanting to wear Number 13.

Christyn will be to Puffs what James Harden is to Beards.
