Technically they cannot but coaches can make it very difficult for you to keep it. For example, team meetings are mandatory and if you are 1 minute late a coach can close the door and claim you missed the meeting. They then cite you for violating team rules. Multiple violations no matter how minor are then used as justification for removal from the team. Players know when they are being pushed out even without it being said. If they survive all of that, at their end of the year meeting they are told, “no matter what you ever do, you will never play here so maybe you should hop in the portal and we will help you find another spot”. The coaches rarely help but the kid is better off leaving rather than risking being kicked off the team with a “violation of team rules” stigma. If the team kicks the kid off of the team for poor performance they have to honor the academic portion of the scholarship and they do not want to spend money on a kid not playing football.

Or so I’ve heard.
It is true you cannot "cancel" or "pull" a scholarship during the year, but most scholarships renew on a yearly basis (very rare for more than that). They are one year contracts. The Coach simply has to not renew the scholarship for poor performance. There is no song and dance involved in that. The students only appeal option is to convince the University to give them a scholarship because of the circumstances, but the athletic department is not involved in that and the scholarship would not be for playing on the team anymore.

He's got an opportunity to collect some NIL money and a better shot to maybe play his way into the NFL. Good for him and thanks for the two seasons he gave us. I'm not going to act hurt because some interviewer wrung a mildly negative comment out of him...

We have players in the NFL. If thats his goal he can do it here. His goal is more money.

Serious question. Do you believe that the only reason someone would rather play at a good P-2 school is money? He can't want to test himself against better competition? It can't be that he wants to try to win a national championship, or a conference championship, or be ranked? it can't be because he wants to play in front of more people, more NFL scouts and a larger TV audience? It can only, 100%, be that he wants more money?

Count me in the camp, that doesn't understand our fans feeling jilted over this kid going in the portal. We like the portal when kids come here, (especially in BB) but when someone looks for greener pastures away from Storrs it is somehow a bad thing or somehow shows a lack of character or whatever.

Florida had half their highly rated 2022 class go in the portal yesterday. This is the new normal. Kids will among other things, want to get paid. If you see what you believe are lesser players than you, getting paid, there is no shame in getting in on some of that.

It's more than "just business" with most fans, but I see that feeling going away sooner than later.

Are you also wondering why Liberty, the highest scoring team in the country that is 13-0 did not make the CFP? It's pretty simple that doing well against the best competition time after time is far more valuable than doing well consistently against mid to lower competition. I love UConn, but the money is not to lure him away from UConn. It is to lure him away from your P4 peers.

Been off the grid for a few days but really disappointed with Joly's comments. Thanks Captain obvious! It's not like the entire staff and administration, legislators and thousands of Alumni haven't been pushing and working for a better outcome. If you feel guilty about leaving keep it to yourself. You don't have to justify a better opportunity by dumping on the program.

The data is showing portal transfers growing with the onset of NIL. While not 100% of the kids transfer for the money I would expect the majority are leaving for the money. Why else is there an NIL database? Are you aware of anyone leaving for less NIL money?

The comments were pretty constructive actually. Silly to not want a talented player like him to come back.
Constructive for who? The same people he could have spoken to personally?

I am willing to bet that pretty much everyone who transfers from a huge program to somewhere like us is going to get less money, and pretty much everyone who goes G5 to P4 will get more money. Are those P4 kids making the move to G5 to get less money? No, that makes zero sense. They are moving because they were sitting on the bench and may get playing time in a G5 to prove themselves.

On the other end, the excellent G5 players move to get more exposure and better chances of drafting and the other very obvious benefits of playing against better competition, having scouts at every practice and every game, being on national TV, which also comes with more money because the P4 need to compete with other P4 schools trying to get the same player. The money is a big factor in a kids decision between peers, not when it is obvious that the move should be made.

If moving into and out of the P5 was about money, UConn would get zero P5 transfers, as a bench sitter in SEC or Michigan gets paid more than anyone at UConn. Joly would have transferred if the NIL existed or not.

Are all the Vandy xfers trying to get to Stanford? If you've got a free ride to Vandy, I think most sane advisors would tell you to stay there.

And have to show up for classes?????????

then why commit here if you don’t like the schedule? our schedule is set at least 3-4 years in advance and play pretty good teams. Good luck in SEC or BiG10 getting bypassed by other 5* kids.

Kid was literally listening to Twitter Spaces being held by MrHotBalls after football games to get the excitement going…
Because he was an excited 17/18 year old kid. He now has new information/experience and thus a new opinion. Something we used to call wisdom.

If a person can't have a new perspective bosses on experience and info....damn!

Correct! Not sure where Joly was coming from with the "it's hard not knowing who you are going to be playing from year to year... there is never a set schedule" comment. UConn's schedule is pretty much set for the next 4 years. Obviously a few games may change given the musical chairs of continuing conference realignment, but contracts for 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 are already signed. Granted, UConn may not be for him, but he doesn't have to utter false statements.

It’s pretty obvious what Joly was referring to. He was talking about the lack of a regular, repeatable conference schedule.

Our independent schedule is just a random box of chocolates. Since they don’t count towards anything they are also like a series of exhibitions.

Unfortunately we won’t be joining a conference anytime soon so this will be something we have to deal with.

Now that he has left the team, he can be honest. Otherwise players and coaches are almost always going only to say positive things.

I am heartened by the fact that the last couple of times I've opened this thread after seeing two new pages added, it's just because you all are still arguing and not because another player has entered the portal.

Advice to those who have just completed their redshirt freshman year with a bit of playing time under their belt. Wait another year.

You will likely get a fair amount of additional playing time next season, thus establishing your bona fides and true market value. Then evaluate the market and, if you must, go then. Next year the market will have far more opportunities for you as everyone who has gone into the portal this year will not longer be as attractive next year due to needing to sit out a year. So, sellers' market next year since so many are transferring this year.

Not sure what the average stay is for a player with the advent of the immediate eligibility transfer, but does it really matter to a player that you are not in a conference? Heck, a two game series is about equivalent to the frequency of an ongoing conference foe at the individual player level.
