UConn Coaching Hire Incoming

I remember having a long conversation with Tom back in the late 90s when I was considering sending my son to Calhoun's camp. Tom was the one running the camp at the time and was very gracious about answering all my questions.

When I was still coaching Tom was at a game and talked to me after a loss. I told him how we're struggling to use the 4-spot in our zone offense. He drew up a set with 3 or 4 variations for me on the spot.

I've sent it to 3 or 4 of the 'yarders asking for coaching help on here and my school (which I don't coach for) uses it to and named the play after him.

He's a genuinely good guy that just loves the details of the game of basketball.

You make it sound like he's getting fitted for a walker.
Not really. He’s turning 60. Hopefully he’ll be our GM until he’s in his 70s. Did he have 10+ years of coaching left in him?

I dunno, how old was Blaney when he retired?

It just means that once again he's willing to announce something prematurely.

I mean, we have a Seton Hall guy as our Head Coach who is brothers with a Duke guy…
When Dan got hired, I heard the 13 year old voice in my head say “no, we can’t hire the Hurl.” The. I looked at what he’d done at URI, and I set aside my ancient Hurley vitriol. Not that we truly hated Dan, but we sure despised him just for being Bobby’s brother..

Heard it Coach K
K is used to handing out cash, so he might might a decent GM. I just wonder how he would do in a world where everyone else is also paying players a similar amount of money.

I remember getting a ride back home to the Torrington area from school circa 2006. Eventually we started talking college ball and the dude(I didn’t know him that well) tells me he roots for Nova because Nardi is his cousin. It was a pretty quiet ride after that and I may or may not have given him gas money.

73 but what’s he have to do with Moore?
Why would you question if Moore has 10+ years of coaching left in him when a predecessor went another 14 years? I don't understand your problem with Moore's age, I guess.

This is an entirely new age in college basketball with the advent of NIL and Portal. Comparing Calhoun to Tom is apples to oranges. In addition, coaches such as Tony Bennett retired at 54.and Jay Wright around 60. Granted they were head coaches but more pressure now with the new landscape.

I forgot the job has to be posted. Even though Hurley knows who he's hiring.

The university is expected to post a job opening as early as Tuesday morning for a new assistant coach to join Dan Hurley’s staff ahead of the 2025-26 season. Tom Moore had been serving in a dual position as assistant coach and general manager, and will shift to focus on GM duties full time. Moore’s role will be clarified further at a later date.

Hurley’s quote from that article says it all. Don’t know what we will win from year to year but whatever happens the effort of the coaches and staff will not be in question.

“I’m demanding, so it’s always hard for me to find people to hire. They have to share that same kind of obsession and they can’t be looking for life balance.”

The perfect guy to lead our program. Passion can carry you a long way.

...they can’t be looking for life balance.”
I suppose if this is disclosed upfront, it's not an issue. And from what I remember from Nardi as a player, he seems to be properly unbalanced. As in basketball-lifer, that is.
