-> UConn is by no means the fallback plan. The Huskies were the first college program to show interest, Connor said. They saw him when he played for the CT Mets in the fall of 2021. UConn invited Lane to a prospect camp the following winter and offered a scholarship in March of 2022.

Lane accepted immediately.

“He’s got a great arm. I like the way he commands the game from behind the plate,” UConn baseball coach Jim Penders said. “He can frame patches very well. I like his bat speed. … I think he is someone who will blossom in our program.”

UConn recruited Lane as a catcher, the position he has played since he started playing baseball at age 10. Having had successful catchers come through the program — like former Amity-Woodbridge standout Pat Winkel, now in Triple-A for the Minnesota Twins — Penders easily sees Lane with having that possibility if he becomes a Husky.

“He has the intangibles to be a great catcher,” Penders said.

Yet, Penders understands the interest scouts have in Lane because of the righthander’s velocity. Lane himself is open to either position.

“I love pitching and I love catching. I'm not swayed towards either one,” Lane said. “I’m not a diehard, ‘I need to catch or else I’m not going to play baseball.’ I will play whatever position that will take me the furthest and give me the best chance at having the best future possible.” <-

Think the odds are diminishing…

His best shot in pro ball is as a pitcher. The body-type and arm talent are there. In high school, he plays against below-average competition. Having seen him many times in AAU, he’s not an elite defensive catcher and he’ll struggle to hit at the collegiate level. The swing won’t play against high level arms.

Just as I predicted with Drew Kron.

Connor Lane is scheduled to join the Norwich Sea Unicorns in college summer ball after he is done playing high school ball. I am certainly looking forward to see him play in Norwich, that is for sure.

It will be interesting to see how recruiting for UConn baseball goes after the conclusion of the NCAA tournament, and the success they have had with 6 straight appearances, plus 2 straight years of making the super regionals, and perhaps a trip to Omaha in this Tournament.

At any rate, we're entering the period of time when recruiting announcements start to pick up, they will be interesting to watch.

Confused on the 2 straight years of making the supers? 2 out of 3?

I think the biggest recruits for the 25’ season are Cooke Quinn Afthim and Padilla. If Uconn retains these guys it really will have turned into a campaign to host a regional in Storrs and the hype that comes with that preseason. Nationally, that has always been in June(if at all) not Dec/Jan. This year should be different. These guys have been program guys who are competing at that level and having 2 years of that production opposed to one year’s magical run is the key. That’s how they’ll build momentum as a program…nationally.
