Men UConn Baseball and the transfer portal

According to the above transfer tracker, Grant MacArthur is moving to Pacific in the West Coast Conference. He is moving to a school that is closer to his home area, that is for sure.

And Aidan Dougherty is moving to Washington University, also closer to his home area.
Both of those are big losses. Hopefully the folks coming in can replace (if not exceed) their production.

A healthy Maddix Dalena will take care of MacArthur. Hopefully AJ Soldra can replace Aiden. They've brought in a good number of offensive pieces. Need more arms.
Maybe Maddix will replace Grant's numbers. But Maddix has never hit for the average MacArthur did last year. More power, yes. And that's even assuming Maddix is back where he was in 2024 and not what we saw at the start of this year.

Yes, we need more pitching, but unless you're bringing in someone from a comparable level that has done it already, you can't assume you're replacing offensive numbers. Soldra -- yes, you can assume he will come in and produce. Every other bat coming in, or coming back, has to actually do it and not just be predicted to do it.

Also, Cole Taylor is now listed on the above website as transfering away from UConn to Elon, which is in the Coastal Atlantic, the same conference as Northeastern.

Soldra a strong possibility of being drafted

What are we up to in terms of outgoing #'s and incoming #'s? Feels like a cleaning of the house this year.

Outgoings including grads and draftees may double incomings with rosters cut to 34. So many pitchers will be gone and replaced with unproven freshman or transfer strikethrowers. I imagine injured pitchers (with a couple exceptions) will be gone too. In this environment, the leash to prove yourself will be short all around with continued churn. Think of how many kids recently have competed in the fall, gotten buried in the spring and are gone without having appeared in a real game. I think they’ll lose 25-30 and add 15 or so. No more high jersey #s.

While I agree to an extent I think the staff should get some benefit of the doubt on hitters coming up a level given their track record. Last year they had MacArthur, Dougherty, Beau Root, Caleb Shpur, and Sam Biller who all successfully moved up a level to be important offensive contributors. In 2024 they had Paul Tammaro, Luke Broadhurst, Jake Studley, and Shpur who did it. In 2023 they had Ben Huber, Broadhurst, Tammaro and Studley. At some point I am willing to trust the staff and expect that they may likely pull in a few key hitters transferring up a level.

I don’t think we should be questioning the longest tenured staff in the country about getting transfers that produced when playing at “lower level” programs, because the offense hasn’t been the problem the last couple years, in my opinion it’s been pitching. It was mentioned above but I’ll reiterate it, look at guys like Shpur, Broadhurst, Tammaro, Huber, Studley, Dougherty, Grant, Freeberger, Biller, and honestly even David Smith who came from LaSalle and Erik Stock who came from ODU, they’ve all came from those “lower level” programs an have produced for us and been HUGE parts of the offense on their respective teams. On the other hand pitching has been so up and down it’s been rough the last couple years lol. Outside of Stephen Quigley, Andrew Sears, Zach Fogell, Pudvar, and Enzo (I’m probably missing a couple more that I can’t think of). The “lower level”/ not really used arms have been very up and down so yeah getting some “higher level-ish” pitching would be nice to get (hopefully they get another couple arms) But I definitely wouldn’t question them on the offensive side as they’ve been pretty good about the offensive pieces they get in the portal from whichever level of college baseball they’ve played.

Tristan Aasland - RHP - JUCO transfer from Bellevue College
Joe Pitts - RHP - JUCO Transfer from Columbia Basin College
Joe Talarico - RHP - JUCO Transfer from Santa Barbara City College.

That gives 16 arms. Assume 1 will fall off before July 1. Whatever freshman they bring, in lets say +1, as it's really hard to break through as a freshman. This is also assuming everyone is healthy and that is never the case with arms.

Would think you need 17 to 18 (healthy arms) with a 34 man roster. Maybe 19?

Evan Menzel, AJ Soldra, Jackson Marshall, Nater Wachter, and Chris Polmemeni who were all mentioned earlier in this thread as transferring to UConn. The above transfer tracker listing now has these guys all listed as transferring to UConn as well.

That’s a strange one. I know the staff always believed in his potential, but even last year as an innings eater we were desperate for, the performance was very very mediocre. On the other hand, I have trouble believing we pushed him out the door.

I wondering if the reduction in roster size to 34 players for next season has anything to do with some players transferring to other schools.

If that statement holds true here, then not sure why Georgia, as they will probably pile up the arms and shake out the 'best' ones, due to roster shrinkage. Would think it's tougher to pitch for UGA than UCONN.

UGA also just added a transfer from George Washington with a 9.96 ERA.

Pitching is hard to find; my guess is they are throwing darts on underachieving live arms & see if one or more can be useful in a bullpen role.
