RHP Tommy Turner is now in the transfer portal
Based on the videos I’ve seen of him pitching before UConn, and the small sample size at UConn, I think this is a fella who will need to learn how to harness his stuff. Which is a euphemism of course for throw the ball over the plate.I looked at the D1baseball.com transfer portal listing yesterday, and Turner was not in it at that time. This morning Turner showed up in it.

I hope the lesson being learned in recruiting high schoolers is to have some balance between feel to pitch guys and these spinrate/velo products coming out of Driveline. Not specifically referring to Turner, but they had a whole crew of young guys who couldn’t command a fastball and/or got hurt.Based on the videos I’ve seen of him pitching before UConn, and the small sample size at UConn, I think this is a fella who will need to learn how to harness his stuff. In general there is a big emphasis in the sport on metrics like velo and spin rate but you are right on that it doesn’t always translate. Need to take a more nuanced approach to HS recruiting, which I think UConn is trying to doI hope the lesson being learned in recruiting high schoolers is to have some balance between feel to pitch guys and these spinrate/velo products coming out of Driveline.
