UConn Announces Jason Candle as New Head Football Coach (Updated)

The really positive thing about this hire is that Candle saw something in UConn

We were able to poach a head coach that had been in place for a decade. He wasn't in danger of losing his job, he was successful

That tells you that we have something here. He's not taking a risk he's making a calculated move

UConn is in good shape for the future. This is a fantastic hire.

A lot of good things to come

Hopefully Sammis returns as OC
Apparently it's been hinted that Candle will have new people managing the offense and defense. Our bowl game may be Sammis's last on the UConn sideline...if the info is correct. Should that be the case, I'm very grateful for the fun offense Sammis gave us... Who knew we could score so well by not relying on lateral throws.😉

From what I’ve seen Toledo fans aren’t very sad to see him go. and the consensus seems to be that he has done less with more compared with the rest of the conference.

So I am slightly concerned about the hire, but hoping it all works out.
Do you think CSU fans saw some of what was written about Mora here in the Yard after he left? It's all subjective.

Less with more as compared to.....what? The rest of the MAC?

He has beaten the following non-MAC FBS teams in regular season games:

Fresno State
Western Kentucky
Colorado State
Mississippi State on the road - albeit a terrible MSU team; however, they're still an SEC squad.
BYU
Arkansas State
Nevada

As assistant coach under Campbell, Toledo also beat Arkansas and Iowa State.

He also lost to Notre Dame 32-29, and BYU 53-52, both games on the road. Played the 'Canes twice and got smoked both home and away; the point is that he was willing to stick his head in the lion's den so to speak. Granted these are mostly buy games but his teams are always extremely competitive which says a lot.

Would not mind us signing up to play a top tier FBS team once or twice per season. I think one of the ways a program gauges itself is how you stack up to the best and you can't know that unless you play them.

Hate to see us go backwards on O. But, a new Captain, picks his crew.

Seriously, I love the hire for UConn and it means bowl games forever.

But hearing, "never had a non-winning season" falls flat in these parts due to Mike Tomlin's lack of success in playoffs over the past decade.

Yes, I recognize college FB is different from pro. But the phrase is nails on a chalkboard at this point in Pittsburgh.

I do hope he keeps Sammis. I don't want our HC taking complete charge of either offense or defense. That's what OCs and DCs are for. There's a ton of other things an HC needs to manage.
The Tomlin situation is a Pittsburgh problem. It is news worthy because rarely do see someone deliver mediocrity over such a long period and still have his job.

But again that is Pittsburgh problem.

Nothing to be concerned about with this new hire!

I fully expect a new HC to bring in his new coordinators.

I hope AD DB does his best to find Sammis a landing spot as a P4 OC or an HC job depending on what Sammis' goal is for profesional development.

Give Sammis the chance to leave on good terms, and if he does well, possibly return as HC at UConn down the road.

Sorry - I am reposting my post from the other thread since that thread was just closed.

What a week. This is a great morning, let's freakin go UConn nation. Mora did amazing things for us, but he didn't quite have his heart in Huskyland. AD David Benedict probably grew tired of the ever increasing Mora maintenance and so he slow played the CSU counter and rolled the dice. But the dice AD David Benedict threw were loaded, he knew this time around we'd have options. Well played AD David Benedict.

liam neeson i love when a plan comes together GIF

Yes, we have to wait for our DC hire.

I don't know enough about the offense that Candle runs to even begin to assess if Sammis is a good match. Hopefully they feel no pressure to "make it work" if there is a conflict.

Let the coach assemble his team.
Kehres probably would have been Toledos next HC if he stayed
