UConn Announces Jason Candle as New Head Football Coach (Updated)

I have to stop underestimating UConn football and DB. I fully expected to check in and find that Candle has taken another opportunity (Tulane). It is impressive that they can sell him on UConn's potential future in a P4 conference.

Heck I'm still watching Lehigh now as planned lol

Once again DB proves why he is one of the best ADs in the country. With all of the coaches needed across this landscape, a school like UConn with no conference, no fertile recruiting grounds, and no massive excitement from the public could have easily been bottom of the barrel’s and ended up with Sammis as our HC. Yet even after all the positions were getting filled and a few decent ones were still available, he pulls this off.

I’m so pumped for our program and also for what image this portrays as well!

I don’t understand this either with Mora or Candle. Every football player and coach is basically a free agent every year. And coaches owe duties to their players as much as their schools. If a coach switches schools, and has an opportunity based on money and playing time that he thinks is good for a player of his, how is it being more ethical to deny the player that opportunity so as to not harm a former employer who hired you with you having every right to buy out of your contract early.

If the rights of the players are what is important, they should be able to hear attractive offers from anyone, former coach or not.
I agree... Just being a little playful with the hypocrisy... A misfire I guess.

I don't think we should deny players or coaches anything. I do think it would be better if coaches avoided actively poaching players but still recruit them if the players want to be recruited.

There is something to be said for showing some respect for your former employer. As a coach you are recruiting players to play for your current team, your current employer. The player may make his decision based on the school, the coach, the location, the climate, any number of reasons. Of course they are all free to choose as they wish. Some kids actually do want the best education. Are you doing a kid a favor by recruing him to csu rather than UConn? Probably not.

I am stunned that Benedict was able to pull this off. Candle has had a lot of offers to leave Toledo at various points these last few years and never jumped. For him to make a move to UCONN speaks absolute volumes about the school's commitment to ensuring the program continues on the trajectory that began under Mora. Benedict could not have nailed this more perfectly. Give that man a Christmas bonus, LOL.

I am more than a bit curious to see if any of the guys who hopped in the portal decide to rethink their decision. Also you have got to wonder if some of our '25 recruits that flipped to CSU are having second thoughts because I damn sure know I would.

This means the end of the 3-3-
