My guess is the staff knows what's on the table and what they are willing/able to offer and let him make the decision. His announcement tells the decision. That's not a knock on him at all. We just can't match what P4s are offering.

Hopefully he changes his mind, but can't fault the kid for trying to get the best chance at getting drafted. UConn will get him drafted for sure but moving to a P2 school gives him more "high profile" currently. Wish all the portal players nothing but the best.

McDonald and/or Welliver should be good to go next year but having a D2 or FCS grad transfer safety net wouldn’t be the worst thing.

In general, it's not about getting drafted in college football anymore unless you are one of the very best college players and few are. It's about making money while you can if you are not a sure fire draft pick. Remember, there were only 20 RBs drafted in 2024 and 18 drafted in 2023.

The contract wouldn't be with the school. If I had millions, I'd offer x dollars to a player under the condition he is available to play at UConn for at least two years. If s/he transfers, the money has to be pd back. Fails out of school, pay the money back.

I am in favor of a minimum 2 year binding contract for all players subject to the school granting a release if agreed. Apply to hs recruits and transfers. As i’ve said in other posts, there is no such thing as perpetual free agency in pro team sports.

I think running back is one position that is relatively easier to find good talent compared to most positions, not that I like to see talented runners leave.

Most athletes believe that they are good enough to start wherever they go. If you don't have that level of moxie, it's hard to succeed as an athlete. And at QB, it's that level of moxie x 100. If you don't already believe that you can be the best in that position, you'll never be...

The larger point is, if our frosh recruits can’t beat out experienced transfers maybe it says something about who we are able to recruit or how we evaluate. There are a bunch of posts in this thread naming several transfer possibilities they see as having immediate impact as if nobody on the current roster could be better. I do want the best QB, but both of our starting QBs this year got a lot of flak and both were transfers. including a double transfer from 2 power conference schools. Nobody was in love with Roberson. I know there are a few other hs QBs besides Wellever and McDonald on the roster but i don’t remember (too lazy to check) if any were more than PWO.

Every team has ~5 scholarship QBs on roster and only 1 can be the starter. At the top P4, they recruit 1 to 2 top QBs per year and ultimately most transfer as there can only be 1 starter. I think if you can bring in a good QB to compete for the starting job, bring them in.

You're making an error in your considerations, though. You're considering the talent evaluations of Boneyarders instead of considering the talent evaluations of the coaching staff.

If you asked the Boneyard 6 months ago if they would rather have Joly or Skyler Bell, most would have said Joly. If you asked them 16 months ago if they would rather have Fagnano or Zion Turner, they would have said Turner.

If the coaching staff think we're recruiting the right players, then I would just trust them because for the most part, they've been correct...

But i do think most of us would like to see what our hs QB recruits can do. As I said. one does start to wonder why we are having problems with success in that area. Only saying at what point do our own hs recruits don’t think they are being seen as a good option. Does a Wellever not get a real shot until year 3. If not, was his evaluation not so hot. We were ranked #46 in scoring this year. Can we get more out of that position? Yes. Is the sky falling? Absolutely not.

Missing what i said. It is about the real potential of our hs QB recruits. If they can’t see the field until they are yesr three or four, always losing out to experienced transfers. how well were they evaluated in hs and how long will they hang around waiting. It’s not like we are playing the best competition overall.

So you're worried about the staff's ability to evaluate talent to bring to UConn. I've already answered that part for you. They've done really well. Or are you worried that "recruiting over someone" might upset them? The staff can't worry about that.

If players like Welliver are who we think they are, then they will be competing very soon to start. If they aren't who we think they are, they won't. It's not that complicated...

Here is the problem for a school like UConn. The top 50 HS QB recruits are going to try to compete for a P4 starting job so they usually won't commit to a G5 school. When they don't win the starting job after the first couple of years, they will hit the portal. So, the highest rated QB recruits (in HS) that UConn can find each year are going to be in the portal. UConn's QB recruits (HS and portal) come to campus and compete in practice. If they are good enough to play, you will see them.

Fagnano had a decent season, but UConn faced a relatively easy schedule.

The biggest problem over the years for UConn has been the lack of a good OC or QB coach so top QBs are not going to come. Hopefully, UConn has turned the corner.
