UCLA Post Game Thread

It seemed like the moment was going to be too big for the first eight minutes or so but they came out of the gate with really strong effort and it ended up paying off. The energy of the team seemed way better today than it had in a while and I think it all came down to Karaban stepping up and taking the pressure off of everyone else. One thing we haven't had all year is a go to guy. Reed was that Friday and Karaban was that today.

Ross off the bench makes sense. We can see how the game is playing out and maybe where we need him defensively. Perhaps it’s Fears - or maybe Coen Carr is giving us problems on the wing. But he can come in with no fouls and try to be our cooler if someone needs to be cooled.
I am not sure about him starting games or not. Tonights game, however, he should have started the second half. We significantly outplayed them the last 14 minutes of the first half. Built the 5 point lead and felt like we had the momentum (even if we fumbled the last posession of the half.)

Instead we gave them two easy looks and some free throws to immediately erase the lead. As you said, I don't mind sending Solo out there in the beginning to see if he's "got it", but tonight we had enough data that Ross starting the second was pretty obvious.

Got to love Karaban playing up in this tourney. His game one performance was overshadowed by Reed’s monster game. But he's been our best player easily and it's great to see him looking to end his career with the biggest bang possible.
It is amazing to see. It seems like in year's past he had worn down by the end of the season (or been banged up) and struggled with his shooting come tournament time. AK playing like an All American all tournament long greatly enhances UConn's chances of making so real noise the next week plus.

We haven’t played our best ball yet, or been fully healthy, but so far the team has showed they have some serious onions. Mental was the biggest hurdle all season, and we’ve brought it these two games

We’re so lucky as fans to have this team to support and the community around it. So excited for another S16

I'm not off Solo. In the tourney, "starting" is an honorific. Solo will come around.

Y'all were down on AK.....till you weren't

Y'all were down on Ross (egregiously so) till you weren't

Y'all were down on Bray....till you weren't

Support.
Exactly! Watch him go off Friday

Gonna need Ball to break the shooting slump, but the defense and silly fouls…….

Too good a talent to play like that. I don’t get it. If your shots not falling…..dig in on defense and fight for rebounds 🤷
My theory is Mullins got so much hype coming into this season that it got into Solo's head.

He was last year's shooting star and may have begun to press to show he's still the man. He needs to focus on making winning plays and forget wanting to be king of the three's.

We need him to make winning plays.....for the team first, and then it'll bring credit to him too.

Who was that? I think he said he was done on the Boneyard until next season. I hope he stays to his word. Who needs fans like that?!
Now I remember, it was the poster Mr. Wonderful. Need to make sure he’s not been on here since last Sunday.

Another NCAA Tournament that Seth Davis picks against UConn, another big L for Seth to take. So tired of his schtick.
He picked Miami to upset Purdue. I was hoping that was a good sign for UCLA game. I actually like that he picks against UConn since he is usually wrong.

I think he picked Kentucky today also. He was 0 for the first 2 games.

Can anything be done this week with Solo? Shooting coach? 2 back to back wide open 3’s then the give up 3 point play other end? When he hits those shots we go to another level.
He needs to not take a three until he has made a couple mid-range to long twos. UCLA was designing cuts and screens to get some long twos wide open and ok rhythm. We need to do the same for Solo. Earlier in the year, he was effective at the foul line pull up…leaving him at the 3-point line when he is struggling this badly is foolish and cruel to him.

Let’s say Solo plays well the first 4 minutes. Hits a 3, plays above average defense.

So what. Ross seems to hit about 40% of his threes and you are guaranteed good to potentially elite defense.

It’s time to switch up the PT, starter or not. Ross gives us so much more including a guy who is around the basket. Rebounds. Dunks.

Ross 25 / Solo 15
Let Mullins and Stewart hold down the 3
