UCLA Post Game Thread

Solo needs to get out of the shooter mentality and get into a scorer mentality. Instead of shooting his way out of whatever funk he is in. Just look to see the ball go in the basket anyway that he can. Drive get fouled get to the line whatever you have to do.
He needs to take notes from Braylon, that’s exactly what he did. See a couple easier ones go through makes the rim feel that much bigger. And he needs to bring it defensively. If he can’t make a shot he needs to affect the game in other ways, or else he shouldn’t play much realistically.

It's not a great UCLA team, but they did beat Michigan St last weekend in Chicago, and I believe their best played (the guy hurt tonight) didn't play in the 2nd half. Just some perspective.
I'm pretty happy. Silas was just out there to dribble and for his presence and Solo had zero points and yet we won pretty convincingly. If the turnovers ever stop and we actually shoot it really well from three look out.

I have never seen so many travels called except by refs doing JV games. I bet this one game had more travels called against UConn than all the second round games combined. Given the current rules of gather steps, etc., I was, let's say, skeptical. These refs seemed particularly willing to assert themselves at weird times. Like the abominable tech on Cronin.

No thanks. We don't need anymore wildly ineffective takes to the rim. He has all but abandoned this mid range, so I'm game for some of that. He's not a scorer, he's a shooter. He had some great looks tonight that just didn't go in. He's 4 for his last 24.

It's the tourney - we have options. I'm all for limiting him at this point as we can't have him shooting us out of a game. We are playing real teams now, UCLA without their big wasn't all that good TBH.

We had 16 turnovers, many unforced. It's not like UCLA was a pressure oriented team. Cut those in half and we win by 20.
You only need to win by 1. Metrics at this point have limited worth. Survive and advance is just fine. That’s who this team has been most of the year.

This team's best lineup right now is with Smith and Demary together in the back court, and Ross on the wing. Not necessarily saying it should start that way, bit that should be our most played lineup.

Can anything be done this week with Solo? Shooting coach? 2 back to back wide open 3’s then the give up 3 point play other end? When he hits those shots we go to another level.
He needs a sports psychologist. I am not trying to be mean or snarky or funny in any way-I am being totally serious. Solo is far in his own head right now it is effecting him. He just needs to see one 3 pter fall and it will go a long way for his confidence. UConn will need him to be a big contributor and he has shown he can be.

Depth won out in this game.

The defense from the guards was amazing as was the second half adjustment on their big guy.

I haven’t seen the offense move the way it did in the last 4 or so minutes in quite some time.

I was thinking the same thing. Mullins took a 3 late that was an attempt at a dagger to finish it - he missed late in the shot clock - and that whole possession everyone was cutting every which way. I had no idea what was coming. I’m sure ucla didn’t either.

Just some honesty here so don't kill me, but I don't think they played very well. The amount of unforced turnovers was crazy. Besides Karaban, and Ross too, they weren't very good from three. Defense clamped down when they had to. UCLA didn't look very good but I do think UConn had something to do with that. Huskies did what they had to do and they're moving on to the Sweet 16. Pretty happy about that. Nice to have that to look forward to the entire work week.

By the way, the East Regional dates in DC are March 27 and March 29. Sound familiar? Good mojo!
Gotta to keep in mind ucla was missing their top scorer. I know we can counter with a limited Silas and absent JStew but need to take it with a grain of salt.

All of this, but the d especially. Dent is an excellent college guard and the defensive effort is invisible in the box score.

Ross kept Dent out of the lane and that was a big part of disrupting their offense.

That UCLA team played with typical Cronin toughness and lots of respect for their fight and effort.
I know people poke fun at Cronin, but I think he is good coach and a solid human being. He and Hurley are good friends and I can appreciate that, too.

Even 50% Demary was HUGE. Really gutsy performance overall.

Disgusting performance from refs….for both teams. NCAA should be embarrassed. The T was ridiculous. Can’t have it in the tournament
Yes, you can say that and not be wrong. But I believe this style of officiating favors a finesse team and would be detrimental to the "physicality" teams. Turns out, IMHO, UConn is better in this style of officiated game. We beat SJ two more times if this was the way those games were officiated. Off my soap box.
