That's pay to play. Schools have a real thin line to walk with these NIL deals. If they publish the deals, it gives all the ammo needed for the student's argument that they're employees.
Aren’t they?

For the last time, unless he’s going to come in and be a lottery pick I doubt he’s in the rotation. I am more than willing to bet anyone who strongly disagrees.

It has nothing to do with how good I think Furphy may or may not be. Most of this board was sure Nowell would have a huge impact at this point last year.

I will not believe any non lottery pick freshman will play at this point until I see it. It is what it is.
You’re doubling down on stupid on a topic that you know nothing about. Just cut your losses man. Will Furphy start? Most likely not, but to say he won’t contribute next year when you literally have no clue is just dumb. These kids coming from overseas that have been playing professionally for 3-5 years before they come to college tend to be a bit more prepared than most guys coming out of high school.

I’m a big “players deserve autonomy and money” guy but man, this really does make it less fun.

Everybody’s gonna have a new team every year, it feels like. Ugh.
Hopefully we can continue to be a program that’s built on a majority of traditional recruits. We’ve had a good balance for two championships. Hope we don’t turn into a yearly free agent, cash register.

That shaped has already sailed. Rev share starts in August, college sports has changed forever, no going back now.
I'm not suggesting to go back. I'm saying that universities are literally trying to thread a needle right now. If universities eventually have to classify all student athletes as employees, legally, there is no financial reason for the vast majority of college sports programs to exist. Universities are already on bootstrapped budgets. You're talking about UConn probably cutting most of their sports...what do you think that means for most D1 programs?

U are correct
The “NIL” deals are between two private parties the athlete and whomever is paying them
I suspect publishing information about a contract
Would lead to a lawsuit for invasion of privacy
There is no way legally (nor should there be))
To limit NIL short of the university contractually
Paying the player and limiting other income
If this was done collectively by an NCAA or league
Mandate, this would certainly be an antitrust violation
Instead one side can totally lie and not hold their end of the bargain. I guess the goal is to disguise the exploitation in a slightly different light.

So player “a” gets poached from UConn. School “y” from a p4 conference offers player “a” 2x in nil. Player “a” transfers but doesn’t actually receive anything more than UConn offered. Thats ok? That happens more than you think.

You can easily place a bet with me if you believe it’s stupid sir.

I’m aware, I get what they’re doing. I just see where it’s heading, the goal posts continue to move until you can’t move them anymore.

Or the more simple explanation...why would NIL funds disclose their contracts? Private companies don't disclose private contracts to the public.

Yes, and I believe it inevitably leads to where everyone thinks it is going, but it will literally kill college athletics. So if you care about these sports, I suggest the public gets behind the compromise of NIL which allows students to get compensated for the value they're delivering as brand ambassadors, and ride this out for as long as we can.

To make them accountable. Private companies are still bound to pay that contract.

I’ve deduced from this board that Furphy is either a future NBA player or not athletic enough for the Big East and will either play big minutes year one or be at the end of the bench with the walk-ons.

I truly cannot think of a recruit where I have been more unsure of expectations.

He's either Luka or Leon. There is no middle ground. I'm more Luka, personally. Hard to gauge from his competition, but he was legit at the NBA camps, received praise from ex-NBA players and NBA twitter people, and Hurley said "the Aussie" would've played minutes for this team this year. Maybe coachspeak, of course... His numbers are straight stupid in some of these tournaments.

Think of it at a very fundamental level. Name, image, likeness. The way it was described to us, a player who stars in a local commercial could be paid for it. A player who signs autographs could be paid for it. A player whose jersey sells in the fan shop could be paid for it. A player who makes an appearance/speaks to fans… etc. That is what being compensated for your name, image or likeness was supposed to be.

Is that what is actually happening in the real world? To some extent yes. But to a whole other extent, NIL directives are paying these kids “salaries” before they even do anything just to attend a university. How are universities in “bidding wars” before the athlete has even used his name, image, or likeness? That’s what it means by pay to play.

Now, back to the portal conversation I came here for…

2025-26 roster needs BBIQ and athletes. Furphy is known for his BBIQ and admits he needs to work on his athleticism-SnC commitment will help there. He will not be relied on to be a lights out shooter like Mullins but he does know how to score when given the opportunity. Blue collar/ hard working kid. Sounds good to me.

I wonder if we’ll take two pgs?

anyone ever see Delaware’s Izaiah Pasha? Only saw one game. Has good size & was awesome against UNC-Wilmington In their tourney in a Variety of wayys (rebounding, passing, scoring, seemed to have high IQ)

3 years left. His list so far is lesser schools, but a lot to like if we took an older guy.

maybe I saw his best game but was really impressive and noticed he was really competitive, too.

Do we really have any idea what to expect with Furphy - kid was balling with Tasmania's best, pretty sure that's not the South Pacific hoops capitol. Feels like a flyer, but I like it.
Tom Penders said he will play right away.

As a Blue Hen alum, yes please!

Love this kid and would not be surprised if we get involved.

Ideal in my eyes is a transfer PG with 2 years left and a combo with handle with 1 year left, stop gap as the frosh mature.

What I dont get is why anyone cares if some rich small business owner wants to give money to college kids? Like I dont love alot of effects of the portal and NIL and all. But car dealerships have been giving kids money for a long time and will continue to do it for a long time so I would rather it just be allowed otherwise some programs will just cheat anyway and have an advantage
I think the transfer portal would fix a lot of issues of not having to worry about regulating NIL.

Regulating NIL sounds like a nightmare to keep track of that many deals happening at once. Putting a reasonable transfer portal system in place can at least give kids second thoughts about jumping schools Willy nilly.

I wouldn’t mind a 1 time free transfer and then 1 year penalty outside of unique situations (like a coach leaving) just to slow this down some.

These athletes are not getting paid to play on the court. That's the entire point of NIL.
This is where Emmert screwed the pooch but sitting in a corner with his thumb up his backside instead of finding a way to frame what forms of compensation did and did not align with the ruling on NIL.

There is no way anyone can convince me that guaranteed payouts from collectives were what anyone had in mind when they started allowing players to make money off their name, image or likeness. Once the horse was out of the barn so to speak, it was over and now we have this free for all.

He went to St. Thomas More. Schools who have contacted him so far.

Jacob Furphy is a 6'6" PG, not sure if he is quick enough to play in the states right away, but the staff went after him for a reason. I think Mullins most likely starts unless both Liam and AK come back. Also I am excited about Darius Adams he shows some of the playmaking going to the hoop that Castle did, now if he can play that good lock down defense on the perimeter that Castle did then we are back in business.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Adams looks very thin and weak to me at this point. Makes it very difficult to play in the big east. Hopefully he gets much stronger.

Yup. And now the universities and NCAA are trying to thread the thinnest of needles to keep college athletics alive. It's a clusterf---, but it's the one we have now. I'm advocating that we accept this reality and try to help thread the needle. And that means swallowing the pill that the transfer portal and the way players are using it is going to be the way...because any way to restrict it will just get automatically slapped down in courts and quicken the eventual conclusion that student athletes are "employees"
