Transfer Portal Starting to Load

I'm all for trying anything as long as there is PLENTY of insurance in place. We need depth. One of the most frustrating elements of this years team was how thin we were.
The last time I laid out a depth chart it was

Solo
Mullins
Ross
Stew
Reed

Nowell
Adams
Abraham
Reibe

With the idea Nowell would get a lot of time as a ballhandler in a Shabazz moving Kemba off ball kind of way with Solo.

Obviously this may not be close to our roster next year. But wouldn’t mind the portal add having a similar role.

Furphy ?

This board has been depressing take after depressing take when it comes to this stuff for the past dozen years. Year after year the same nonsense about us being left behind. We got a bit of a reprieve from it this past year in the spring summer because we destroyed everyone in a dozen straight tournament games but the posters are back at it again.

There's a portion of this board that won't he satisfied unless we win every single national championship and if there's anything up in the air they think the roof is going to cave in on them.
I could not agree more. It's ridiculous. We won 2 straight in era where it is incredibly hard to do, made the tournament even after losing all of those great players, and we pushed what many think is certainly a Final Four team if not the national champion to the brink. We have a great coach, terrific assistants, and a basketball first school with tons of tradition. Here's a news flash, we may not win next year or even get to the Final Four. It's incredibly hard and the ball has to bounce your way sometimes. Yesterday it did not, maybe next year or the year after it will. I doubt Hurley would have stayed if he felt we could not compete. He could have gone to Kentucky where the resources are endless. I suspect he knows we can, and I have a feeling he will coach as hard as he has ever coached to get us back to the Final Four.

Furphy ?
Based on what we’ve seen with past freshman here, I seriously doubt Furphy will be in the rotation.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if Adams isn’t a big part of the rotation. Realistically, I only see Mullins and Reibe getting solid minutes next year and that’s if we don’t recruit over neither in the portal.

I think UConn is in a sweet spot like a few other schools where they have enough NIL to get a few players they want and not enough where they're hamstrung by selfish players. That seems to be the dream mix for these top tier coaches.

Jacob Furphy is a 6'6" PG, not sure if he is quick enough to play in the states right away, but the staff went after him for a reason. I think Mullins most likely starts unless both Liam and AK come back. Also I am excited about Darius Adams he shows some of the playmaking going to the hoop that Castle did, now if he can play that good lock down defense on the perimeter that Castle did then we are back in business.
I am excited about Darius too but after watching him a few times I am more excited about him next year. I wish we got to see more out of this year’s recruits and hope we see something about this year

Final 4 quality rotation depending on the transfers?

Transfer PG1 30 / Adams 10
Ball 30 / Mullins 10
Stew 20 / Mullins 10 / Ross 10
Transfer PF 30 / Stew 10
Reed 25 / Reibe 15

Bench: Transfer PG2 / Furphy / Singare

30: Transfer PG1 / Ball / Stew / Transfer PF
25: Reed
20: Mullins
15: Reibe
10: Adams / Ross
Stew isn’t coming back for 10 nor should he.

Adams is more Big East ready than Mullins is. Furphy, who has a much more developed body than both of them, is arguably more Big East ready than either as well.

Amazing is the fact that there are 3 top ten HS kids that have not made their selection yet, Ament/Burries/Peat. If I'm a top program and I'm pulling together NIL, I am DEFINITELY waiting to see what I can get in the portal before I divvy it out to a potential 1 and done. Can these kids really be doing themselves any favor waiting this long to commit? What is the benefit of waiting until the portal opens up as a HS recruit?
I'm almost to the point that I consider all players as 'one and done', since draft and portal are available to all every year.

Previously I tended to prefer portal players with multiple years of remaining eligibility (assuming similar profile of course). But starting to think that that final year players are better due to risk of a transfer not working out.

Adams is actually my favorite prospect of the group. I just think Mullins game will translate the easiest without needing the ball in his hands. And I’m not sure what position Adams is playing yet.

I may eat a shoe if Furphy plays next year.

I would say the safest type of recruit in terms of not OAD is a proven transfer landing at a top program, non NBA profile and multiple years left. We did do that with Reed/Mahaney which was the right idea.

Every time I see someone say Stew got better defensively, I wonder what team they were watching. He needs to work on his D. It was just a couple games ago he got faked so badly in the lane that he reminded me of Kemba "breaking" McGhee's ankle. It seems like he has the athleticism, but maybe not the desire to play D.
Any player UConn looks to bring in has to be slightly above average defensively at the minimum. We saw yesterday how key defense is to what UConn does. For the point guard I would value defense and breaking down a defender on O over other metrics like 3 pt shooting. This team played much better, including in the 2nd half yesterday, when Hass was aggressive in getting by his man. We need someone to create space by drawing defenders.
Matter of degrees. He was very bad early on. He became a usable player towards year's end. They call that progress in certain groups.
I watched the games so I know that AK is a better defender than Stew. And I can read scouting reports which tell me that Mullins is 2” shorter and at least 25 lbs lighter than Liam. I don’t care how good his motor is he will have trouble guarding big wings
i agree, but unless I am confused (could be) your initial premise was guardian guards. My apologies if I read it wrong

We recruited Mgbako a bit out of HS. Would be a decent AK replacement. Not sure about his shooting and passing--never seen him play. But the other #s look nice.
You saw him play last year against UConn. He was terrible against us. But he was early in his freshman year then.

You will, he is 6-6 220, will be 19 this summer and has an old man's style of game. Will be an impact player next year.
