There are gonna be no good coaches left. It's early in nil but look at the casualties and guys who have quit. If these schools drop all this dough from their TV deals, dough they weren't dropping before, and not getting results? Those coaches won't last. IU gave the bank to this team. No win, by Woody. That's gonna happen a lot.
This carousel has a short shelf life. If you think NIL like this is sustainable you need to use your imagination.
What I like about it?

Wow. Imagine you pointing out something that every regular poster on this board is painfully aware of, and pretending you are the only one that knows it. Totally on brand for you.

Interesting leap there. You apparently missed all the posters who apparently think we will be shielded from the chaos.

You can go back to posting into the void about how you know better than the people who get paid gobs of money to coach and construct rosters.

It’s nothing against Furphy, but after the struggles freshmen consistently have this year I don’t think it’s realistic to think the lowest ranked guy of this current group will be an impact player.
The only reason he’s ranked so low is because he’s from Australia and they don’t know what to make of him. Still a top #100 guy. With his size, handle and basketball IQ could see time off the bench at the 1, 2 or 3. I think he’s really gonna surprise and be a big contributor next year.

It's a tough one because we aren't going to keep getting top ~30 recruits if we don't play them freshman year.
Well outside of the bigs and lottery picks that’s what we’ve been doing post Bouknight.

I don’t see why that would change next year even though I wish it would.

I’m so willing to bet he won’t. It would be completely off pattern unless there are no other options.

Hey, you may be right. It doesn’t fit our recent pattern. Just seems like this kid has something special about him. Hurley was quoted as saying he would have fought for minutes on this years team when he signed. You can take that with a grain of salt though as might been trying to light a fire under a few individuals on this years team. Anyway, we’ll see. Excited to see him when he gets to campus this summer.

Every time I see someone say Stew got better defensively, I wonder what team they were watching. He needs to work on his D. It was just a couple games ago he got faked so badly in the lane that he reminded me of Kemba "breaking" McGhee's ankle. It seems like he has the athleticism, but maybe not the desire to play D.
Any player UConn looks to bring in has to be slightly above average defensively at the minimum. We saw yesterday how key defense is to what UConn does. For the point guard I would value defense and breaking down a defender on O over other metrics like 3 pt shooting. This team played much better, including in the 2nd half yesterday, when Hass was aggressive in getting by his man. We need someone to create space by drawing defenders.

I was watching his off the ball defense, which got immensely better. He started the year either losing his assignment, or not paying attention to other action. By the end of the year, he was tracking everything and calling out movement. His footspeed is still not great but his stance on defense was, which made him wider and harder to get around. He still fouled but he was going up with two hands instead of coming down with them and he was traversing screens better.

Look, he has pretty mediocre side to side foot speed on defense but he did get better in his positional defense and awareness. Those are the two things a player like him can fix more easily and he did. Foot speed takes a lot of offseason work, if it is even doable.

Hurley had lots of glowing things to say about Nowell before he hit campus too.

What are your thoughts on his backcourt mate Rohde? I am assuming, from your username, you are a UVA fan also and may have some insight.

You're basing this on where he was ranked at on a recruiting site? If so, I think you're doing it all wrong. Furphy is a part of the NBA global Academy in Australia, the same program that develop Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels and Josh Green. He's been the best player in that program, which is why he had high major offers outside of UConn.

Here's what Sam Vecenie said about him:

Had a great day at the Australian U20 Nationals.

Best player I saw: Jacob Furphy (not related to Johnny). Just an absolute hooper. Tough as hell. Competitive. Winner. Insane hoops IQ. Super skilled.

Felt same way watching him that I did the first time I saw Jaime Jaquez in 2018

For the last time, unless he’s going to come in and be a lottery pick I doubt he’s in the rotation. I am more than willing to bet anyone who strongly disagrees.

It has nothing to do with how good I think Furphy may or may not be. Most of this board was sure Nowell would have a huge impact at this point last year.

I will not believe any non lottery pick freshman will play at this point until I see it. It is what it is.

Not at our level here. He'd be a backup pg at best - he'll probably end up mid major somewhere

I know

Got it, didn’t watch much of UVA this year and highlights are highlights. Stats, highlights and his height made him interesting at first glance.

Adams is really lean. He will need to get a lot bigger and stronger for the battles in the Big East. But with his skills, the future is bright.
Mullins, Adams and Furphy all will need to get stronger. The video of Furphy was good but he is awfully skinny. Maybe it was the video or maybe they play with a bigger ball in Australia but it looked huge next to the players

Would you mind explaining this a little? Is your position that we should play highly rested freshman more than Hurley thinks is the best way to win games? Said another way, that we should risk not winning winnable games so we can play freshmen who aren’t helping us win for other reasons? And if that is your position, how do you ever get players to play as unbelievably hard as Samson Johnson played the first half Sunday, before foul trouble, if they know the coach isn’t all in on maximizing the team’s chances to win?

Furphy is listed at 6'6" and 220 pounds. That is not skinny.
Thanks I was going off what he looks like in the video that was posted. I hadn't seen much of him before that. Maybe it was the video? He does look good moving without the ball - cant tell much about defense

One of my favorite players in the portal.

The 6'3 186 incoming super senior has eligibility thanks to the JUCO ruling. Averaged 14.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 4.8 apg, 2.9 spg (!) last season for Troy and was named the Sun Belt's POY. Is one of the best defensive guards in the portal and he's also a good interior scorer, making 58% of his 2PAs while about 2/3rds of his FGAs are from inside the arc. Can create scoring opportunities off the bounce.

Only gripe is a 28 3P%/66 FT% turns me off as a player of UConn's caliber.
