Transfer Portal Starting to Load

So you don't think stew and Ross as upperclassmen qualify as insurance? Both would get PT at the 3.
Maybe - question is whether they’re willing to come off the bench. We need to put sure fire starting talent around Mullins first.

My bones say Alex isn’t coming back. He probably has zero to gain by coming back as his tape is out and he’s a year older, other than NIL that trumps what he’s getting on a 2 2 way.
Disagree. He has a few reasons to return.

1. A 3rd ring.
2. He loves it here.
3. Way more fun being the big dog again than a 2 way.
4. And, as many claim, you included, he can earn more in college if he's not guaranteed.
5. Possibly, very possibly a better draft stock. The tape is out doesn't mean he is done growing as a player.

Mullins if not a starter would still be a significant part of the rotation. I wouldn’t want to be in any position where we are reliant on a freshman without having sufficient insurance in place. We learned that this year with Liam.

350 names in the portal.
You nailed it with Mullins. Have to believe he will be a significant part of the rotation but at least not a starter for day 1, unless he is that good. Frankly, I am anxious to simply watch all 3 in the McDonald's game just to see them play and move. You don't learn much from those games beyond just getting a sense of quickness and shooting form.

I think it's 50/50 only because of NIL. He may be able to make much more going the NIL route than a 2nd round draft pick. If that's the case, he really can't hurt himself much more as he would have already played himself out of the 1st round this year.

And idk what the odds of bringing in 3 transfer starters is, so if both Liam and AK leave then I think Mullins would start alongside Ball.

Our 2/3 being 6'3 185 and 6'5 190 is not ideal. We would need a huge PG pick up for the defensive end.

I would guess Ball will get stronger. I think Adams may take a year to get up to speed strength-wise, but his height would certainly be a help. Agree that we need another transfer, but I can get behind a 6'3 or 6'4 200 lbs guard who is quick (so can the rest of the country...LOL).

There is a massive market for #3. Everyone who watches him likes his game and thinks they can use him better..not to mention the money that will be available. I hope he stays.

That is not zero
I mean, maybe:

1) low probability against the field
2) emotional decision making, he's graduated and a likely financial move is next for him
3) " ", not sure a graduated player is thinking about fun
4) most significant variable - what is the two way guarantee potential against a 1 year NIL
5) doubtful - he had his chance this year and went backwards. He's probably better off going with the positive stock he built one year younger than another year of growth. What's he going to improve on? His footspeed isn't changing, his shooting mechanics didn't move, he showed no floor game to speak of. Alex is already an old junior.

He's going to be surrounded by a group of strangers next year, freshman and transfers. Maybe that's something he's ok with, but it feels to me like he not only graduated academically but emotionally. I'd call it a 10% chance, but what do I know?

We may have guys exploring the draft to gather feedback while keeping a return to the team possible. We may have guys going into the portal but keeping a return possible. It's going to be interesting.

It doesn't. A more traditional PG and a swing in the portal, with Mullins as a 6th-man would get the job done fine.
And a starting PF or is that stew? My comment was based on hoping to pull 2 starters out of the portal. Pg and PF

Some depressing takes on here. The SEC has had more money and has been cheating for years, well before NIL was a thing. This isn't new. NIL bridges the gap. We at least have offers to make now. Legitimate ones and competitive to what they offer. Is it the same? No. But what we have is good enough to win National Championships. Calm down.

We recruited Mgbako a bit out of HS. Would be a decent AK replacement. Not sure about his shooting and passing--never seen him play. But the other #s look nice.
He had a few decent games at IU not a great team player

I think the key with the portal, especially when looking at other high majors, is understanding the kid that if put in the right system, is untapped. I'd start with the right physical profile, then probe. What I wouldn't do is what we did with Mahaney and start with the wrong physical profile, and think we could turn that into a wizard.

The advantage Hurley has is teaching, development and motivation. I'd much rather find the kid deprived of those things with a great physical profile. Mgbako grew up under Woodson for gods sake. His whole mantra was iso ball that he ran through his bigs, with absolutely no guard play. Indiana would be a program I tap into.

When you aren't going to be the highest bidder and may have to shop in the aisle of less obvious, you have to find potential.

I think we saw a few glimpses of it, but I expect Solo to get a fair amount of run at PG next year. Has he shown it? No, but his passing and ball handling got much better as the season went on. He's not an NBA SG. Just doesn't have the size. His path is as a scoring PG (defense must improve). People scoffed at me when I said Tyrese Martin would come back as a guard his senior year, but he did. Solo can work his butt off and become a PG.

That allows us to (a) still bring in a bigger PG (b) split time between Solo and Mullins at SG and (c) bring in a wing with size to play the 3.

I see a whole bunch of speculation despite the rule against it, but it seems clear that some players who have eligibility won't be back.

Stewart at the 3 and recruiting a solid PF would work too. I'm not sure the details matter as much as getting some guys wjp can attack the rim and have size to defend

There are plenty of 6'3 SGs in the nba eg donovan mitchell, Cam thomas, eric gordon, jared mccain, Anfernee Simons etc, , It's more important that Ball become a better defender than a PG

Personality wise I don’t think he would be a great fit imo

Amarri Monroe-Quinnipiac- forward 6'7'' .MAAC POY- 18pts/9 rebs/game in portal. Could be an outlier at the 3/4 re: affordable NIL package. Don't know if he could adjust to BE but is a NY kid.
