What exactly is he doing that is a “mockery”? We lost our entire recruiting class from last year and are replacing them with random mercenaries. This is what college sports is now.

If you don't see the difference between how Pitino and Hurley use the portal, then I don't know what to tell you. UConn just announced the return of two kids who averaged a combined 8 PPG last season while Pitino ran off the Big East POY.

College sports should serve the athlete at their existing school before the athlete at some other school. Coaches like Pitino have clearly taken advantage of a tool that was initially meant to benefit the player by effectively forcing anyone that's underperforming even slightly out the door. Yes, this has always happened to some degree, but it's far more prevalent now that everyone's a free agent every year. When a coach determines that a top 50 recruit who grew up across the bridge from MSG - and had a perfectly normal freshman season - is unfit to be the 7th or 8th man on the following year's team, he has reached the point where he is only feeding his neurotic impulses.

And if you think Luis was simply “run off” I’m not sure what to tell you. Much more to that story. I’m personally very happy that Stew and Ross are returning. But, some here weren’t and were expecting a more immediate portal option. Read those threads.

Yet, original post here was with a SJU freshmen entering the portal and how Pitino was making a mockery of the game.
 
In the center rotation should we have interest in Onyenso who played at Putnam Science and is now in the portal? I wanted to pursue him out of high school. His picks of Kentucky and then mercenary Kansas State give me pause that his thinking may not match Hurley, but maybe he is humbled enough to accept coaching and a roll here. I'm assuming we have at least a casual existing relationship with him from his Putnam Science days

I'm surprised how bad he has been so far. I thought he would be much better. He would be an upgrade over Singare but I don't think I'd want him as the main backup center.

respectfully, I think you’re dreaming
Players have been run off programs forever
Any sense of amateurism that was still left ended
with the NIL the players get paid based on their perceived value if they don’t perform then they
transfer/ let go
Pitino perhaps determined that he had a better player than the one he pushed out(you’re assuming that it was the coaches decision to push the player out and not players decision to leave)
imho pitino i has embraced the changes and has been very forthcoming about it

based on the increased attendance and interest in St. John’s basketball, he’s doing his job quite well
