I'm really not interested in a short, pass-first guard with questions about his shooting. Doesn't make sense for our offense or defense at all.
I would like him in the big east but not on our team.... He could be a really nice piece for a bubble team but dont think he will be a key part of the team I hope we are next year

I think we have better options than Cadeau- Including but not limited to DeMary. Let's see how we do Tuesday. More concerned about the SEC teams than Pitino with Silas .Fits like a glove for our needs.

Bryce Hopkins seemed to have made a decision. We’ll be having some good battles with him next year.

This all makes sense but the consensus on the board has somehow become "tall" matters more than anything. And if you bring up Shabazz Napier you get a bunch of "the game has changed" responses. I would be ok with the next Shabazz, myself.

It's not a matter of "small guards can't be good" as much as "small guards have an uphill battle to be successful in our system."

Yeah, Shabazz would be an all-world guard wherever he ended up. But that's hard to predict when watching a kid in high school. Shoot, it's hard enough to predict after watching them play D1 basketball. More often than not a 4* guard doesn't end up 1/4 as good as Shabazz was in college.

If we know our offensive system works best with big guards, and our personnel right now needs size, why wouldn't we prioritize guards with size in the portal?

I think our offense and defense would benefit from a taller guard for what Hurley runs. But at the same time, our short guards this year just were not that good. So short and talented, a la Bazz, Boat, etc. would work just fine.

Elliot Cadeau is really bad. Turnover percentage through the roof, can’t shoot, he definitely lost his confidence after that Bama game in the tourney last year. I have zero interest in him. I would happily take a small guard if it means I’m getting someone on the level of Sears, Braden Smith, Cryer, Ziegler etc. But even that, we saw the deficiencies it can create when going up against big, athletic teams. Just not interested at all in Cadeau.

Cadeau was also bad on a bad team

Yes

Our big lineup without a point guard worked when Liam went off for 38. But then it lost to Seton Hall, which beat us with heavy ball pressure and we couldn’t score. Our lineup with Mahaney trying to be a point guard got punched in the mouth by Memphis and it’s ball pressure. Diarra became our team mvp for a reason.

Cadeau has limitations - but the dude had 20 assists in 2 tournament games. He can get us into stuff and get guys the ball in their spots. We can run around and around in circles all we want but if guys with the ball are flustered by ball pressure and don’t deliver the pass in time, it’s wasted energy.

Yes we had size at every position when we dominated the country. But all five guys could pass. Is it the size or the skill that made it work so well? Combination of both, really. But can we find a 6-6 point guard again like Jackson or Castle? You can’t just take a guy who’s 6-6 and force him to be one. Maybe Demary can really do it - but 6 assists and 18 turnovers against Marquette and St. John’s doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies about his ability to handle ball pressure. Small sample size - but he has only one or two box scores in his career where he looks like he was playing point guard. And if he can’t our offense humming, we don’t have another choice. Diarra is gone. Mahaney we don’t know - but the track record isn’t great.

A 6-4 Cadeau who could shoot a little better would be perfect. Or a good passing Demary would be perfect. But neither exists. The Drake kid would have been ideal. But our current pieces are a huge step down passing-wise from two years ago and that’s something we need to address as much as size.

Agree with all your points. Nait George would be option 1 for me for these reasons because of his assists numbers.

I have no issue with taking a smaller guard if we’re getting one that can do it all: penetrate, get to the paint, shoot, distribute, handle pressure, defend. I just want nothing to do with Cadeau; I don’t like small guards who can’t shoot & are turnover prone.

Ideally we'd have a tall PG who can distribute, shoot, get to the rim, and defend all at strong levels. Stirtz is the only guy that actually fit all the criteria.

So we're going to have to compromise on something with a PG unless someone new and exciting enters.

I don’t like UConn teams without enough ballhandling and passing. Seen that movie before and it doesn’t end well. I don’t want to ever see it again.

There isn’t a Castle or Newton type of point guard out there, so we are probably going to have to address this problem with someone smaller. You can coach bad habits out of kids and get their turnovers down, but you can’t coach someone up to the point they can get you 12 assists in an ncaa game unless they have that innate skill. If we don’t get Cadeau or Nait George, we better find some sort of scrappy mid major kid who can dribble and pass to come off the bench when our offense of 5 non passers is getting ball pressured all over the floor, running offense 25 feet from the basket, forcing up bad looks.

I’m definitely with you, I want more ballhandling. I’m just not sold on Cadeau, I’m not a big fan of his playing style for what UConn needs. I’m sure Danny could coach him up and get him playing at a decent level, I’d just look elsewhere.
