I agree and there has been money around college basketball for decades. Now it is out in the open.
And because it's out in the open the amounts being paid are skyrocketing.

Castle, Newton, Spencer, Karaban, Clingan is an extremely high IQ and skilled starting 5. All 5 of those guys think the game at a higher level than most college athletes
It really does depend on what Spencer is looking for.

  • Is it to stay close to home (maybe a little bit)?
  • Is it strictly about the money?
  • To be a key piece to a national championship?
  • To develop his skills for a professional career?

The good news is we have a terrific portal story to tell. As good as any school in the country.

If it's about the highest bidder, I am not sure Danny would want him anyway.

I’m laughing reading this thread. Note to all haters: Coach Cooley will be successful at Georgetown. He has way more resources than he had at PC and he was successful at PC. Read it and weep!
Putting aside the trash talking, I think Cooley will be successful at Georgetown. I am a UConn die-hard, but there's no doubt that Cooley can coach & that he will have more resources to succeed. Honestly I hope he does achieve; the Big East needs a strong Georgetown.

Obviously he hasn't coached a single game yet and snagging Spencer would be a big win if it happens, but besides that Cooley has done absolutely nothing noteworthy so far this offseason. The Georgetown roster is a certified disaster right now and if nothing significant changes they'll likely be competing with Depaul and Butler for worst in the league next season.

I honestly thought he was a decent coach until this year. Maybe it was the fact he was departing, but his team failed and either he failed his team. Lots to prove for Cooley at GTown.

Pitino and St. John’s are getting hyped as a tourney team. They now have a lot of pretty good guards, is that likely? Soriano was already great although he’s 24 this coming season.

Cooley had built a reputation for himself that was really strong at Providence. They hadn't made the tournament since 2004 before him. He brought them to the tournament 7/12 years he was there, including a Sweet 16 literally 2 years ago.

College sports is a results oriented business, but Cooley was an exception. He was beloved in Providence, and had a lifetime contract if he wanted it. And let's face it, that lifetime contract didn't come with a realistic expectation of winning big because....it's Providence. Before 2022, he had made it out of the first round exactly one time, and then got bounced in the second round. But nobody really cared because........it's Providence.

Then he crumpled it all up and threw it all away. Destroyed his reputation, quit on his team, packed his bags, sold his home, and checked out of the season before the tournament even started. And for what??? Now he has the team he wants and the brand he wants. I think the expectations to Cooley to win will be bigger in the next 3-4 years than it was for his entire career combined. As you said, lots to prove.

For the NBA draft his age is a bad thing, But it's a very good for his college basketball prospects.

Dingle plus Soriano plus Pitino is probably pretty close to a tourney team right there. Jenkins helps with the continuity of the offense.

They need 1 wing to step up to make sure.

Cooley was the hometown hero in Providence. Much more than a coach, he was Providence nobility. He will be well down the list in Washington, DC. Even if he builds a winner in DC, which will be tough, it will be tertiary news. The good news, if he loses he will be pretty invisible. Maybe he can bring back the 1980s. Unlikely but he still gets to cash the checks. That's a pretty nice consolation prize.

I think this board is severely underrating the kind of love Cooley would get on a national and local level at a school like Georgetown if he had success compared to Providence.

Nobody cares about Providence being good, everybody cares about Georgetown being good. Him leaving Providence for Georgetown, hometown hero or not, was 100% the right move.

While he may have been a hometown hero at Providence, he gets to carry on a tradition of black coaches at Georgetown in an area that’s known for its diversity. The off the court reasons are just as good for him to want to be at Georgetown.

No but I’m surprised at his age he’s not going overseas or trying to make more dough.
He’s likely got plenty of VitaminWater and a quality view at Belmont and Saratoga.

It's definitely a personal and professional upgrade for him, don't blame him at all for it. Just hate the way he did it and it's hard for me to respect it. I'm sure 95% of the CBB world doesn't remember or care, but it's crazy to me that a head coach for a team with high tournament aspirations would just quit on his players and take a job somewhere else before the tournament even starts

I'm no fan of Providence during BE play, but those kids deserved for their coach to be with them until the season ended

I can understand the way he did it being an issue for sure. I just push back at the notion that Georgetown isn’t a significant all around upgrade for Cooley for that “for what” part of what was said. Even if he loses, it won’t matter much as he’s far from the biggest name in DC for people to care about. Which can be a good thing mentally and for his family unless he likes to be the biggest fish in a pond.

But yeah, most people outside of UConn and Providence fans and a few others in the Big East will hardly remember or care in the grand scheme of things. Nobody cares about Providence. Lol

Yeah I don't understand all the Cooley stuff, then again he's never actually won anything.. I don't have an issue one way or the other with him. If he can fix G'Town, isn't that just good for the league in general?

The Cam Spencer kid is interesting, but I just cannot imagine we'll get him in the NIL sweepstakes.

Got it, my "for what" comment was more referring to destroying his Providence legacy. Definitely wasn't clear in my original post lol

Cooley was going through marital issues at the end of last season and it prompted him into taking the Gtown job. This is known to those close to the team and Cooley.

Regarding Cooley, I have heard from a friend of a friend who i know is close with Cooley that he had to leave providence for personal reasons. There have been speculations as to what happened and I do not details but it seemed like he had to make this move
