Tourney - Round 2

Rivers is going to finish 2 rebounds short of a triple double as Wes has emptied the bench.

17 11 and 8, not a bad day at the office.

Madison Hayes (All ACC snub) with 17 and 9

Azaiah James finishing with an efficient 26 and basically sat the entire 4th.

A fitting end for a very special group of seniors for their final game in Reynolds.

.-.
And that's why they play 2 halves. Plenty of games I would've been happy to call it good after 20 minutes.

My point was the competitiveness of it: of the 8 higher seeds yesterday, 3 lost, 3 trailed/tied at half, and just 2 were in hand. Not bad.

Going into the 4th quarter:

Azaiah James 10-16 from the field 6-11 from 3 - 26 points

Madison Hayes 5-6 from 3 - 17 points

Saniya Rivers 7-10 from the field - 15 points

That's 22-32 from the field from the trio of seniors through 3 quarters against a defense unlike any they have ever seen in their 4 year careers.
True, but when during the season has NC State shot like they did from 3 today? Dealing with that type of efficiency would be tough for a lot of teams.

I seem to recall LSU winning an NC largely on the strength of a hot hand from 3 in the 2nd quarter. Jasmine Carson went 5-6 from 3 and 22 total points, and before they knew what hit them Iowa was down 59-42 at the half and never recovered.

Dawn by my count has 46. Vic 27, Mulkey 64 or 65, Brenda 43, Graves 22.

Other notables: Bill Fenneley (25), Wes Moore (16), Scott Rueck (18), Kevin McGuff (17), Cori Close (16), Gottlieb (13)

These might be slightly wrong as Im doing mental math counting wins based on Wikipedia pages from my phone on a bus ride lol
Geno has 137.

Texas routing Illinois, as expected, up 23 after 3 quarters. But I can see why Vic may be worried bout the next game or two, just because his team seems to be slacking off on defense and offense. They're dominating, but look too casual. This is a bad habit to develop at this point in the tournament.

Oh 100%

This was only the 5th time all season the Pack made double digit 3 pointers in a game and the 3rd time they shot 50% or better from 3. So no doubt it wasn't the norm ... but if you tout yourself as an exceptional defense, you wouldn't expect a team to preform that efficiently on that sort of volume either. Most of those looks were pretty good clean looks, and by the girls you want shooting them. Azaiah and Madison combined for 11-18 from three alone. I mean those are the best 2 three point shooters on the team, how are they getting 18 looks from deep with the majority of them being very clean quality looks? That seems like a poor scout or poor execution. To your point, they were on. You can get that many clean looks and easily go 5-18 too, so some of it was happenstance.

I saw MSU hedge hard and trap at times when ballhandlers turned their back - but that was about all the disruption I saw today.

If I was game planning for State I would be tempted to play some zone and always know where Hayes and James were because they are the 2 zone busters. Dare Zoe and Saniya to hit long jumpers to beat you. What I would NOT do is press up on the ball and encourage State to push tempo and play fast. State is at their best in a free flowing up and down game getting out in transition and I thought MSU encouraged that by trying to extend their defense against a team with superior athletes.

Is she going to be a senior already?

I think she is the same player now that she was as a freshman. Minimal growth and improvement.
Yes she's a Jr. currently.

She has significantly improved her 3 point shooting this season, but for the most part I agree. She was an impact player as a Fr. but is basically the same player still.

And apparently, according to reports, she wants to take an EIGHTH YEAR??
What possible grounds could she have to seek another year of eligibility? She did not play during the
'19-'20 season, so should not be eligible for the extra covid year. This is her 4th season of playing. I think she's already taken 3 red shirt seasons. It's mind boggling that she would even try for another year.

edit--she red shirted her first season at Texas in 2018-19, also sat out 2019-20 and 2022-23

Oklahoma taking Iowa to the woodshed
And that's with Beers doing not much. I don't think Oklahoma is noted for their defense, but they seem to be shutting down Iowa today.

Didn't the announcers say something about MSU plan was to pack the paint in the attempts to stop NC State from driving? Knowing how James, Brooks and Rivers like to take it to the hoop, there is some logic there. Had they done a better job on the perimeter, they would have gotten gashed inside. Frankly it was a situation of pick your poison if you ask me.

I am surprised Iowa/Oklahoma isn’t more competitive. But I have to say, the SEC has really dominated this round and this tournament so far.

Iowa's worst loss before today was Tennessee, by 10 points

.-.
MD down 14 to Bama in the 2nd half. The BIG is looking at going 2-8 in the 2nd round, assuming that USC beats MSSt…..

And now Alabama is pulling away from Maryland. I remember the good old days when I could make fun of the SEC because everyone other than South Carolina got knocked out in the 1st or 2nd Round. Not anymore. Now the B1G is stepping into the void.

If West Virginia beats North Carolina than the big 12 would have more sweet 16 teams than the big 10. I would never have guessed that.
