Tourney - Round 2

Coach Yo: second Sweet 16 berth as a lower seed in three seasons

Meanwhile, Kenny Brooks: second straight defeat in Round of 32 at home (as a 4 seed) to a Big 12 team (2024: Baylor (while at VT), 2025: Kansas State).

Not exactly big upsets by seed, but both #5 seeds have beaten #4 seeds today.

Well that's interesting. I'm sure I'd heard that Van Lith got her degree in 3 years at Louisville. Earned a Master's last year at LSU. Getting a second Master's this year at TCU. That's taking advantage of the opportunity.

Good for her. The work ethic to accomplish that with everything else going on as a college athlete is impressive.

You are correct

Jayda Curry is closing in on a Louisville single Tourney game scoring record. She has 32. Schimmel had a 33 point game and McCoughtry 35.

As I typed that she just tied the record.

She does clever stuff. As her undergrad at Louisville was in business/finance, she qualified for the 1 year MBA (instead of normal 2) at LSU. So at 23 she has bs in Finance and MBA already with her TCU program on top of that.

Similarly before most even knew the rules, she recognized a path to Olympics with 3 on 3 and entered enough games to qualify for the Olympic pool. Being one of the few USA players meeting the q standard earned her an Olympic bronze medal.:)

Curry having a monstrous game, but it looks like TCU is going to hold off the Louisville come back attempt. The Big 3 weren't exceptional today, but Emma-Nnopu and Hunter combined for 41 points on VERY efficient shooting, way way beyond their normal scoring contributions.

Okay it's final 85-70. Ville got as close as 8 but ran out of gas. 41 for Curry.

Yeah that pair came in averaging just under 12 ppg combined. They shot 14-18 overall and 8-11 from 3. That's huge when you can get role players stepping up like that.

Prince did have 19 and Van Lith 16, also a big 10 assists.

Cochran had 15, but Louisville got almost nothing from anyone other than Curry and Cochran.

The role players particularly dominated TCUs first half. Coach Walz must have set up defense to gum up the works for Hailey Van Lith, Prince, Conner.

The ol "anybody but those three" is gonna beat us.

...and they did.

Probably best TCU game this year. I thought Louisville was playing well at season end and would win in an upset.

This was far from one of Walz's best teams, but he's won a bunch of Tourney games and his teams usually play hard for him. While the Cards were chipping away at the lead I thought TCU maintained composure and didn't look panicked. Great season for the Frogs. They still have to win 1 more to live up to the seed, but they got out of the first weekend, seemed like they were kind of a trendy pick for an upset. 33 wins now. Lots of program firsts.

Great job by Coach Yo. They are pretty dangerous imo.
On the other hand anyone with thoughts on Coach Colen for Baylor. I think this is year 4, and they've been past the second round once, when they beat a pretty depleted Virginia tech team. I think from 09-21 Baylor made the second week every year, at least. I like coach Collen. She seems to really love the game, and she gives very honest interviews. I think she recently signed an extension so no hot seat. But I really hope Baylor does return to bring a powerhouse. It kinda feels weird them being outside the picture.

I was thinking this earlier, Ole Miss has become one of those teams you don't want to see in your bracket. maybe it was 2 years ago they took out Gonzaga and then very highly seeded Stanford.

I was skeptical when Collen was hired. I think overall she's done a solid job, but definitely the Tourney results leave a lot to be desired.

Collen has done a good job IMO replacing a legend like Mulkey. As dominant as the program was under Kim, that’s more of a testament to Kim than it was to Baylor investing in and prioritizing women’s basketball. Collen keeping them a relevant top 25 program and Big 12 title contender is commendable considering the status of women’s basketball right now

I would have to question Collen as the right choice for Baylor moving forward, as I'm pretty sure their standard is much higher than Round of 32 exit. If not for Kenny Brooks doing what he does best (losing to lower seeds in the NCAAT), they wouldn't have the one Sweet 16 that they have with her.

The biggest issue--there's no easy fix without substantive NIL coffers.

Those hockey line subs from Caldwell just completely smoked all the momentum Tenn had. Are the high level recruits really gonna be on board with that stuff once they get in the program?
Charli Turner-Thorne used to do that at Arizona St. I was never a fan of it. Really hard to get an offensive rhythm that way. For her it was more important to have all out defensive intensity every moment of the game. She couldn't get any high level recruits, so the style definitely didn't help her in recruiting. Maybe it will be different for Tennessee.

This game is wild. Tennessee is such a helter skelter team. At their best they look like a top 5-10 team, at their worst they’re losing to Georgia

Well they sure got to know what the plan is. Caldwell is very open and direct about strategy and goals. The current team, even holdovers, actually really like it. She has a group of quick shooters coming in next year, so we can observe.

Caldwell's math is slowly working vs tOSU. Tenn has taken 28 threes vs 8 for Buckeyes. Tenn also leads in fg attempts 59-38 and rebounds 31-24.

Buckeyes shooting well, so still a game going to Q4.
