Tourney - Round 2

Horrible news for Watkins and quite possibly the worst time of year for a serious injury. Not only does she lose the rest of this tournament, she’s likely out for next season too. I don’t see Juju staying five years so depending on her recovery progress I could see her coming back for next year’s tournament.

After several years of terrible injuries it felt like this year had fewer of them, but this is really sad news and my heart goes out to her and USC.
Everyone heals and rehab differently and every ACL tear is different to. If she comes back too early and reinjures it that means another year. She needs to be careful. Having said that the all knowing internet will give you recovery times ranging from 6-9 months, 9-12 months, and 12+ months.

Lastly will she be a help to her team joining them that late?

I think North Carolina is a bit of a Rodney Dangerfield...can't get no respect. Gonna advance to the Sweet 16 w/ no drama in either game, will improve to 29 wins. Not bad. We have some Duke and NC State fans here who are contractually obligated to hate the Heels, I get that, but beyond that they still can't seem to get any positive press around here.

Slow down there partna. I never said that I hated Chapel Hill. Do I have disdain... contempt for the school, athletic teams, their fans and fight songs? Yes. Does my blood pressure rise when I see the school colors, car stickers, and flags n real life? Certainly. But hate is too strong of a word... In my opinion
Yes, I always say you have to love something first before you can hate it. No love ever for Chapel Hill over here!

A "little" tired? Dang.....who wouldn't be?

Barker still seemed to have some energy and she was playing without three starters, Maryland only lost one starter. It was a back and forth game and both left it all on the floor.

Triangle.

Wake Forest, UNC G, NC A&T and High Point didn’t really carry the banner for the Triad. Although Greensboro did compete for a quarter or so! ;)

Hey now

So the Triad geography is bigger than the "research triangle"? Wake is a bit of hike from Raleigh no?

I'm always learning here. This year I got my masters in Arizona college hoops:confused:, next year I will work on the Carolinas. (or maybe the Oklahomas)

Hey, if there's a registration link for the course let me know. I may need to brush up on my American geography depending on how things work out up here. ;)

Michigan State season ended at the hands of State .. last year it ended in the hands of Chapel Hill. Next year...... ???

Confession... in high school I wanted a pair of Converse Weapons..... my mother wouldnt buy me the Red ones.... so I settled for the ones that the Chapel Hill team wore...

I'm thinking of calling mother up later to complain 30 plus years later

The Triad doesn’t include Raleigh. Just High Point, Greensboro and Winston Salem.

The Triangle is Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. The research triangle is not in the Triad, but rather the Triangle.

Raleigh is located in Wake County, but Wake Forest is in Winston Salem (originally was located in wake county but the school moved a long time ago without ever changing their name).

Clear as mud? :)

You forgot to mention the town of Wake Forest is still in Wake County.

This is no where near as convoluted as the triangles and moving schools but it's one of the many things that irritate me.

If anyone asks where is Notre Dame or the announcers at games say where they are the answer of South Bend is wrong!!!

The University of Notre Dame (du Lac) is in Notre Dame Indiana zip code 46556. It has it's own post office, police force, etc. If you approach from the Indiana turnpike you go through part of South Bend to get there but there are other places around ND like Roseland, Cromwell, Indian Village, Granger that are around ND. If you fly in you will land at South Bend International Airport. (I don't want to get into politics but Mayor Pete was not good for South Bend imo.)

Maybe announcers have a deal with the city or maybe they don't care but it's what it is.

Thanks! My error was noting that triadduke was of course a Duke fan, so I assumed triad and triangle were the same

I guess then it is really triad + Duke!:D

It now makes plenty of sense...and see I do learn something daily in the Boneyard.

Most important is the Carolinas have plenty of good teams left for the weekend.

There's of course the pizza triangle, with vertices Hartford, New Haven, and New London. That's way far afield of North Carolina, but I'm sure Triad would want to be educated on Connecticut gastronomy should he ever travel there. ;)

Finally the Sweet 16 begins play starting in Birmingham with UNC Duke. The pundits all say Duke but I think UNC will find a way to sneak past them, assuming Utsby doesn't get into foul trouble.

Then Maryland gets the privilege of losing to South Carolina despite all of their high % shooters.

Switching to Spokane IMO NC State will knock out LSU with their scoring runs. It will be close but Wes beats Kim.

Finishing the day with UCLA ending the Mississippi season by Betts having a 20+ point night.

If I'm 0 & 4 this time tomorrow, a real possibility, (actually if I'm not at least 3 out of 4) I won't inflict any more unfounded predictions on the world, don't worry.

I've been on this forum for well over a decade ... I've made a plea for someone to send down a couple of New Haven pizzas ... To no avail. Guess I'll have to drive up there to get them myself.

Maybe you should consider a reciprocal arrangement involving Carolina barbecue? :)

.-.
Just make sure it's Eastern North Carolina barbecue.
Years ago I worked for a container shipping line that operated out of the port of Wilmington. I called on a lot of companies in Eastern NC, meeting with their transportation people, taking them to lunch, etc. I remember Carolina barbecue fondly.

Where's the fun in that? Aren't unfounded predictions part of the fun of being a member of the board? ;):)

Turban time
Here’s my guesses for the coming round.

Elite Eight: UCLA, SC, UConn, Duke, K St, TCU, NC St, Tennessee.

The upsets are chancey, especially TCU over ND and Tennessee over Texas.

K St over USC is very cloudy in my crystal ball, probably because of the emotional turmoil currently roiling a young team.

NC St over LSU will depend mainly on Trigger stepping up in a big way. The guard play on each squad is probably a wash.

Okay, here's something crazy. Not that I'm saying it will happen, but what if TVO totally goes off for USC? She had at least one 40 point game and another 30 point game during her career at Oregon St. She has the ability to put up big scoring numbers, she just hasn't done it at all this year.

1). It's March Madness. Nothing is crazy as it can be possible.

2). I've been wondering that as well. As the offence is no longer centred around Watkins, it's very possible.

3). I'm going to be focused on Howell and Heickl today against KSU's guards. They could be another wildcard for tomorrow's game.

One of the most impressive things about USC in the MS St game, after JuJu went down, is how the entire team responded. MS St is not a great team, but USC still put a serious beat down on them without their superstar in the lineup.

TVO, Iriafen, Marshall and a very talented group of freshmen are extremely capable. The challenge for Coach Gottlieb, her staff and the team is to reorient their offense on the fly to put all those talented players in position to step up in JuJu’s absence.

I hadn't gone into Saturday games but since I haven't been wrong yet because no games have been played yet I'll continue.

ND has Westbeld and Karlen healthy neither of which played in the last TCU matchup. This will be a revenge game and it won't be close. ND by 15+.

Texas vs Tennessee is tough to call. Tennessee can score points but Texas will win by 7-10.

Now for my two big upsets. Oklahoma uses their speed and outscored UConn in a 3 point win. Followed by Kansas State scoring in the paint at will to upset a short handed USC team that's missing Watkins.

Elite Eight: UCLA, SC, Oklahoma not UConn,UNC not Duke, K St, ND not TCU, NC St, Texas not Tennessee.

One thing is certain one of us will be wrong several times!

And USC has some depth at the post position to make it challenging for Lee to get her shots (I think). Not to mention she also has to defend much more athletic competition than what she has faced since coming back from her recent injury.

Kansas State scoring in the paint at will
Why would that happen? Marshall, Iriafen and Akunwafo didn't go anywhere. Lee will certainly meet some resistance. She had a good game against Kentucky, but I wouldn't say she dominated. 16 pts/9 reb on 8-18 shooting. Kentucky has a little more height than USC but I'd say the USC post players are more physical.

For the record, UConn has more than enough speed to stay with OK. The challenge for the Huskies will be to hold their own on the boards. The challenge for a turnover prone OK will be to take care of the ball against UConn’s relentless defensive effort. It should be an interesting game.

I hear you about USC's athleticism. but I think they will have to rely on a young core. They rose to the occasion last game but that may have been partly the effects of a tide of emotions buoying them up. That will have subsided in the coming game. I expect Kiki and Rayah will be able to sustain their previous effort, and I also expect TVO to disappoint. K St will have no such problems, being a mainly senior squad that has waited for their shot for a while now.

That's why I said Howell and Heickl were wildcards in an earlier post. We know Smith has handled the PG role well as a starter in her freshman season. Her fellow 2024 mates, Howell and Heickl, have come up big in some games while fading into the background in others.
