There’s no coach that was going magically elevate the Knicks over the Pacers. Thibs basically did that against the Celtics, but the Pacers were simply too good.

This was an idiotic move by Dolan, but it’s Dolan, so it was expected.

If Carlisle coached the Knicks and Thibodeau coached the Pacers, the results would have been the same. Having better players make you a better coach

All of these things are true, Pacers are the better team and Carlisle is the better coach and I agree with the firing. Thibs definitely reached his ceiling and Malone is a WAY better coach. Also Jay Wright will never coach again, you can tell by listening to him and the fact that he left Villanova when he did and never took another job tells me that he just wants to enjoy life and his money. He’s older than he looks also. Smart guy.

Although I agree with the change bc I believe the roster itself fits a more offensive minded coach. Not sure saying Thibs reached his ceiling is accurate with this current team considering the Knicks for the first time in 25 years made the conference finals & to say Malone is a way better Coach seems odd? Is it bc Malone won one NBA Title with the best player on the planet & then got fired less than 2 years later? Also, Malone was a train wreck in Sacramento. Thibodeau did very well with the Bulls & resurrected a Knicks franchise, which is even something Phil Jackson couldn’t accomplish. Thibs has been a head coach of three different franchises & made the playoffs 10 out of 12 years, which is super impressive. I don’t agree with that take & think it is super critical of Thibs.
 
I don't think Hurley would be a good choice for the Knicks. A college coach (albeit the best of them) over a proven winner like Malone? Nah, we're fine. Relax.

Logically I think we are fooling ourselves if we think Jay over Danny here. Everyone is saying Jay has zero interest in coaching again and honestly going to a place w his guys isn’t neccisarily a smart move for the same reason. Leading men when you have relationships with half of them from before you were the coach does not make things easier from a leadership standpoint. Logically there are other options but a well led franchise doesn’t drop a high floor guy without a plan already in place. Historically the Knicks are not a well run franchise but let’s just assume they aren’t completely ignorant here. If that’s the case this IS one of the few jobs Danny was talking about last year when he turned down the Lakers job. He wants to coach in the NBA, I agree that its a dumb decision but thats a known fact. Arguing it’s bad timing for him….when is a good time? There will always be a AK who came back for him. All signs point to the Knicks already having a plan in place but giving Tibs 24 hours. I’d bet we know who their coach is by noon on Thursday. The fact they didn’t immediately announce it makes me think it’s slightly more likely it’s a college guy but not dramatically. The Lakers threw the sink at him last year and we want to tell ourselves he’s not a good fit for NY? He’s a NY guy. Unfortunately my gut is telling me we all see the signs and know whats up. Its prob 50/50 at best y’all.

glass half full, regardless of if he actually gets offered the job or not, he can tell recruits he turned down the Knicks and squash that rumor that he’s holding out for it… although prob matters less with the every year roster building paradigm

I'm not sure a Thibs-led Pacers team even makes the playoffs. Talk about oil and water.

I think it’ll be Malone, I also think they’ll call Wright before Hurley, but I’m sure Dan is on the list of “must call” candidates.

I also think it’ll be stupid if they give the job to any college coach coming off the season they just had. Go find someone with NBA winning pedigree to hopefully push this group over the top. Going experimental only makes sense with a younger, unproven team.
 
A year ago, chasing the NBA dream would have required Hurley to uproot his life, move across the country and sacrifice the pursuit of a three-peat. This time around, if the Knicks came calling, Hurley would be considering a similarly prestigious job based in the metropolitan area that incubated his basketball odyssey.

He’s lead assistant for the Clippers, but only for the past season. Before that, he was out coaching, save for a short FIBA stint, since 2007.
 
I could be wrong - but I am honestly not sure that Hurley is the flavor of the month for the nba any more after we struggled just to make the tournament this year. Realistically, when you look at our big picture as it stands now, from an NBA GM’s perspective, we had one truly dominant season and one dominant 6-game run when the bracket blew up a bit. Slipping all the way back to an 8 seed this year probably took some of his shine off.

If I’m a GM, I also look at the fact that we’ve lost to Marquette and Creighton (2x) in the Big East semis recently as at least somewhat problematic. In an NBA playoff series, teams get used to your schemes and make adjustments. Third meeting against our peer teams haven’t gone all that well (Even the St. John’s semi was a 95-90 game - and the Marquette final that year they didn’t have Kolek).

Now if we have another dominant Final Four type season this year, I think his shine comes back a lot. But as I said, I could be wrong. In a lot of ways it’s like being a player in the draft - the whole league doesn’t have to believe in your potential. You just need one.

I remember back in the day, some people were enamored with Sammy Mejia while other people rightfully knew that Paul Milsap was the guy.

I think the consensus around the league / journalists / podcasters, is that the Knicks have more talented players than the Pacers and Carlisle is a better coach. So you think we won 2 nattys simply because we had better players. So we dont need Hurley at all then.

I think 2 titles in 2 years then outcoaching the national champ coach in the 3rd beats the BE semis. I don't think they care that much about the NBA Cup.
