I've always felt that if Hurley was gonna jump to the NBA he would prefer to take over more of a re-building organization where he can wipe the slate clean and steadily build his own program over time like he has everywhere else. I'm also not sure he wants to jump into the Knicks circus where he's the leading topic on First Take every other day. Brooklyn might be a better one to watch if that opens up.
BK has zero aura. MSG is the Mecca. Hurley seems to like attention ;).

No.

They lost because the Pacers are better than the Knicks.
and the Pacers coach is better than the Knicks coach. Did you not see Game 1? Changed entire trajectory of series.

To the idiot, "Dan In Shelton" that just called Evan & Tiki on WFAN saying he's a huge UConn fan but how can Dan Hurley not be the top choice for the Knicks, goes on a promotional diatribe: If you're a poster here and that was you, you're not a UConn fan.

So are the Knicks going to hire the Pacers’ coach?

No. So what’s your point?

There’s no coach that was going magically elevate the Knicks over the Pacers. Thibs basically did that against the Celtics, but the Pacers were simply too good.

This was an idiotic move by Dolan, but it’s Dolan, so it was expected.

Game 1 decided the series. It was the biggest collapse in playoff history and cost Thibs his job.

Carlisle>Thibs

It was super weird that the Knicks starting 5 routinely dug holes in playoff games and that their rotation expanded in the playoffs compared to regular season. I think these 2 things begged the question that the coach is at fault. Given how close they got to the finals I think and hope that they won't look at college coaches. That would be a 2yr learning process and the east is winnable now.

Knicks fans are delusional. They are far away from an actual chip. The only reason they beat the C's was injuries to 4 of their starters - Tatum, Brown, Porzingas, & Holiday. Also, no coach is going to win you a Title if KAT is your Number 2 guy. Period.

Take your UConn goggles off for a minute. Why did the Knicks, who have a two year window to win, do this now? Its quite simple. Mike Malone. He has title pedigree and local flavor. He is available now and wont be in a year. Why would the Knicks, who want to win now with two guys who are defensive liabilities, hire a college coach with no NBA experience? How does the timing make any sesne for Hurley? It doesn't and this board shouldn't be overly dramatic about it.

And why would Danny take this job right now? He has a top 5 team returning and a Knicks team who probably reached max potential. Where is the real upside? There is a greater chance he doesn't match this season, the Knicks fans revolt, and then what? The window to win is now. You dont bring in Danny in this situation.
Excellent take and 100% spot on. If anything he’d come back around in a rebuild a few years down the line. This timing makes zero sense the more you think about it.

The Knicks were pretty much being coached by the internet at the end. The 5-man unit that Thibs stuck with forever was the worst five man unit in the entire playoffs. Yet he stuck with it for so long. Finally bailed on it when it was too late. Fans were calling for this all season.

Discovered by accident that staggering KAT and Brunson as much as possible is the best way to go.

Simple offensive schemes. Too much isolation. Not enough off-ball action for Brunson to make his life easier. Should have had Bridges/Hart/Deuce exclusively bring the ball up vs full court pressure to lighten Brunson's load. Too much drop coverage, and too severe of drop coverage. Took until Game 5 to realize that you should actually try to make Haliburton's life difficult and not easily come off ball screens with a ton of space. He's never had a clue when to call timeouts.

Meanwhile Indy looked like a fine-tuned machine. Great chemistry, ball movement, seldom needing to create their own offense or forcing stuff vs a set defense. That's Carlisle's system. Indy has one guy who can consistently create his own shot and it's Siakam. Even Haliburton needs transition or pick and rolls. Turner didn't have a good series. They simply executed their stuff and got open looks.

The only reason the Knicks even hung around this series is because they had superior individual talent. Indy looked like a seasoned NBA team. The Knicks looked like a bunch of guys playing pick up. It's coaching.

And it wasn't Thibs that traded away 6 unprotected picks within the last year, including 5 for Mikal Bridges. There is a hard ceiling with Thibs, but he just got the NYK to game 6 of the ECF.
No, but Thibs is the guy who wasted the team built using those 6 1sts. Him waiting until the middle of the series to find out that there were things Delon Wright and Landry Shamet can do to help them win is his fault

Wright is not going to say yes just because there are former Villanova players on the Knicks. I am leaning toward believing Seth Green’s take that he doesn’t want to coach again. I’d be happy if that’s wrong.

Hurley doesn’t want to coach forever. That spells trouble if he truly wants to coach in the NBA which he has said appeals to him. It’s better to get started now. And staying in the northeast is something else he and Andrea really want.

I don’t follow the NBA closely so I’m hoping those that say Malone will be the top choice are right.

Hopefully this is done quickly. At least UConn has commitments already for next season. They could opt out if Hurley goes but at least they are in Storrs for now.

What happened last time doesn't mean it couldn't happen this time, unless your position is that he'll never leave someone behind.

FWIW

Why the author is probably going to end up right, I don’t think the reasoning has any merit beyond just trying to trash on Hurley. He was clearly heavily considering the Lakers. The Lakers clearly wanted him. New York’s geographical location is an extremely significant difference between the two situations.

I agree. I'd be worried about Dan taking the job if it were offered, but I'm more inclined to think the Knicks already have what they are going to do lined up and Malone makes more sense. Could that person be Dan? Maybe, but it just doesn't feel like it.

Dont think its Malone. He only plays 7 guys too. Knicks need to develop and play more players.

The 11 second shot clock difference is a big deal in that by the time they bring the ball up and dribble in 1 spot for a bit looking things over they have around 8-10 seconds to make a 1 on 1 move or pass the ball for a 3. Seems like it’s player talent making their own moves more than coaching in the NBA over college. Look at the ball movement in UConn’s offense as an example. That is coaching heavy.

I don't think the Hurleys (Andrea and Dan) go now. Maybe the next time the Knicks job opens up. It's on the heels of them realizing the NBA isn't a good match for Dan, nor their lifestyle here in CT... The NBA road warriorship sort of season isn't fun.
Very good points. I would add if he doesn’t get general manager responsibilities for how he wants to construct the roster and what players to draft, that would be a drawback.

That's the impression I got. It wasn't just the Lakers, it was what life would be like as a coach in the NBA and I think he didn't like what he saw. With that said, Hurley is so driven to succeed that you just never know . . .

Supposedly the firing was Leon Rose's idea and Dolan okayed it.

Everyone loves to hate on Hurley. Until somebody needs a new coach and suddenly everyone opens their legs for him
The message and the visual gets a ‘like’ from this guy.
