All true and yet it was still pretty much considered just a rich guy country club niche sport before Tiger came along.

Nah. Maybe a white guy's sport, but not a "rich guy country club niche sport". I grew up working class. Everyone I knew played golf at least occasionally. Rich guys don't sleep in their cars in the parking lot to get good tee times at the local muni.
