This team cannot win without Carlton. Period.

Another poster said this after the Cinci loss; Carlton looks like he’s taken 50 sleeping pills before the game. It’s true. He has zero exuberance. He is the antithesis of Akok who openly celebrates everything positively and excites his teammates. Josh’s utter lack of any emotion, jumping, dunking, love for the game, etc should be why he comes off the bench. AG, CV and all others show heart even if they have problems of their own.

Everyone remembers the way he came on last year right? What was that and why so different now? Seriously.
 
We can’t win with him or without him....PERIOD. Hopefully Dan Hurley message to Carlton somewhat got to him today and he can give us something.

So Sid has been in the dog house .. but honestly, other than the three ball, what do we gain by exiling Sid and giving Polley so many minutes? Sid is active on the boards on both ends and attacks with aggression. The way he played today doesn't look like someone that should have been relegated to not even taking off his warm-ups the last few games.

And I was far more impressed with Whaley than JC today. I don't dislike JC, but he just seems two steps behind the rest of the game.

I think uconnbill is right; he needs a fire under his butt!

As far as I'm concerned, in order for this team to be successful we need Josh to be all he is capable of being in terms of a sizable defensive presence in the paint, a formidable rebounder, a scorer- and a good passer. When he is "on" other things start clicking for the team. The whole team needs to get some fire and intensity, with Josh being one of its leaders. He needs to own his clearly defined role on this team for this to be a season of progress and moving forward for the program. There is literally no one else capable of filling his shoes at this present time. Josh is not the most agile center around but he does have talent; he just needs to play smart and inspired basketball.

I think Coach Hurley benching Josh against USF for most of the game was his way of trying to light a fire under his butt. We'll what happens on Wednesday against Tulane.

He's really bad, there isn't much to commit to. He's physically weak, he turns it over, he can't jump, and he flips the ball up at the backboard hoping it goes in. We're stuck, he's not a starting center at this level and Whaley would be a nice player for Niagara. We have no point and no center, our two true talents are freshmen. It's not a good situation.

Unfortunately we do not have reliable ball handlers or high IQ guards on our team. Until the light bulb turns on for our upperclassmen it’s going to be tough sledding.

Hurley decided to make a point today. To send Josh a message. Decided it was more important than winning. We'll find out if it was the right move. But once Carlton went out the game was -- it was OVER.

Josh has been crushed the past two games. He is playing scared. Frightened. Hurley has said that he isn't coaching well enough. That Carlton hasn't gotten the ball close enough to the basket. Today he got it closer and couldn't finish. His confidence has been destroyed. His focus was drek. He rushed. He was waiting for something bad to happen. He is waaaaaaaaaay outside of his comfort zone.

But take him out and we have no chance. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. Null set. That's the truth.

Calhoun would have sent this message a long time ago, I have no problem with sitting kids at all. If they're not man enough to grow up and learn, then we're not winning with them to begin with

Hurley has to start sending more messages to more players more often. You want time? Bring it and stop making the same mistakes game after game after game
 
What I’m afraid of is that Josh has reached his basketball potential and skill limit.
 
I don't think there is a big gap between any of the top 10 players right now, so no one is irreplaceable. I do think Hurley needs to better match the game plan to the talent UConn has.
 
Team has zero chance without an effective Carlton, big guy in the middle. . We have no backup center to him and please don't tell me it's Whaley or Sid or Akok because we need them but those guys are not centers. That's like a baseball team saying we're going to play without a shortstop.

Right it has nothing to do with what is happening this year. In the interim, Josh has put on 25 pounds of muscle (?) and plays like a 160 center. he has skills that he doesn't know how to use and no center to develop them against. I haven't been to practice but I'll bet he dominates because he is a team unicorn. He is the only size and heft present. I'd like to get some football player to come in and beat on him a while. Teach him how to inflict his will upon someone. You can't learn that in games.

He is right. You came up with the "obvious" guy who would make the difference who will never wear the uniform so who cares? Let's talk about what we have or what we don't have. Call me a moron again but LIUConn is heading in the right direction.

We are better against smaller foes with Whaley playing because Josh can't leave the middle and be effective on D. And despite his size advantage on O he is suddenly playing 6'6 when posting up and never leaving the ground to score the ball. This is a kid who made us excited about his improvement the last 3rd of the year last year. With a summer to add muscle and more game, explosion to his repertoire how could we not hope we'd have a better product yet watch the games. He runs uninspired dragging his feet never lifting them unless he's actually running. Hardly ever see him explode to a post to get the ball it's a lean against his defender and try to push him out of the way. Move dammit show us you care about this team. Like someone said above this is on the staff too, what was missing during the summer and pre season? He's not the same kid and he shouldn't be, he should be better!!!!

Maybe he did last year but he's not even THAT guy now CTB. He's regressed dramatically how?

I agree with everyone, we need him to be that guy or the one we hoped for which showed up vs Indiana. But heck, he's not the only one who we can say that about. Why?

Also very true mau. Also I’d rather him be consistency average (10 and 7 say) vs. inconsistently have a good game here and a few clunkers.

This team needs a wake up call.
