I liked the additional of a new reliever as well. They needed somebody. Story is coming out of his slump. If they can get Bregman back soon, plus the kids, this looks like a team. Story may need to move to 2B and Campbell to 1st. I'd like to send Campbell back to AAA to get right and practice 1B.

I don’t like the return but I don’t mind moving on from a guy who wasn’t interested in doing what the team needed. They can use the savings to extend the young guys and maybe add a pitcher and backup catcher this summer. The offense doesn’t really need Devers.

It's fine if you're okay with not winning any time soon and you're okay with taking a long term approach to try and win years down the road. They basically ruined their team short term to pay injured Alex Bregman the same amount as Aaron Judge per year.

The fanbase is melting down.

It’s a disaster of a trade. You can try to spin it however you like, and reports are coming that Devers really wanted out, but the return is not even good for trading your franchise cornerstone. Banking on the young players is probably going to backfire, and I doubt we’ll be able to keep Bregman around.
 
The trade is a disaster. The only "positive" is that the Giants are eating the entirety of the deal. Who's the best power hitter on the team with Bregman out, Narvaez?!

That's nonsense. They can be a playoff team this year. Just need to have the young guys step up and get Bregman back.
I think the return was poor, but Harrison is talented and still young. The fanbase is childish, just like Devers.

Now, if Anthony doesn't start mashing and Bello doesn't get right they have problems. But they fleeced the Yankees and got what is one of the best young catchers in the game. The Crochet trade was a huge, huge win. Houck falling apart wasn't expected or Bregman getting hurt. I saw Mayer as a 3B not SS anyway, so he'll get that shot. I do wonder if Yoshida is close to being able to Dan Hurley again.

The truth is, anyone who thinks this deal is acceptable or necessary needs to grow up. This franchise is a clown show. I though anyone would be a step up from Bloom. Wrong!
 
So, three trades where the Sox gave up Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers.

1) For Betts they got Alex Verdugo (played 4 years and traded for Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice).
2) For Bogaerts, they let him walk in FA. Maybe not the star they thought but a career .287 hitter.
3) For Devers, they got LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, OF James Tibbs, and RHP Jose Bello. All with some promise but appear to be pretty far from contributing in the bigs (I believe).

I'm honestly not trying to stir the pot, but as a Mets fan who lived through terrible ownership/GM's, these moves are not moves you make to contend as a top tier franchise. They're money dumps that don't make you better on the field.

I think it was necessary. Remains to be seen how it plays out. Harrison was mentioned with Paul Skenes as the best pitching prospect in baseball a couple of years ago. He's 23. If he develops into an ace as was originally expected, the team is better for this trade.

I'm not worried about filling Dan Hurley. Abreu and Bregman are due back, Yoshida can hit, Garcia is mashing in AAA and even Blaze Jordan is finally looking good. The team is loaded with position player talent. They needed pitching.

@Deepster Hicks is 28. He's a failed starter who looks good a middle reliever (which Boston needs). Harrison isn't "far" he was a top prospect who has struggled since being called up last year, but then so did Crochet in Chicago in 2023.
 
Jeff Passan compared the Devers trade to the Stanton trade from Miami to the Yankees. Some years good and other years very bad. I just see it as the Sox getting rid of a malcontent and having the Giants pick up his salary. IMO, you can't have a malcontent around all those young players. I'm certainly not melting down over this trade although it does not look favorable in trade values at this time.
 
No matter who’s in charge of the Sox, the game plan remains the same when they get rid of a good player. Completely trash the man after he’s gone. They don’t need a malcontent around the young players who if they totally pan out might be as good as he is now? Please, what is this daycare? Devers is still a young player, and he didn’t become malcontented in a vacuum.

They're a .500 team the past seven years since they won the World Series and they no longer keep their best players. Some fans can spin anything but most fans recognize what's happened.
 
Bill Simmons is claiming Henry is reducing bear term Red Sox financial obligations as part of a move to help Liverpool. They're negotiating a player transfer that will cost roughly 100 million euro (plus that player's new contract).

Nobody trashed Mookie. That was the big mistake, not paying him. Fantastic player. Never heard anything bad about him. Not paying Bogaerts was absolutely the right move. The mistake was not trading him and losing him for nothing, but they kept him to placate the fans after the Mookie trade. Same reason they extended Devers, despite his liabilities on defense. Nobody "trashed" Bogaerts, we just knew he wasn't all that good. Devers is a hell of a hitter, but a guy that won't play the field has limited value. He's not a leader and I think that's the issue with all the young guys. Bregman is a leader.

There were shots at Mookie. Nothing like the way they trashed Terry Francona, though. Leadership is hitting the ball. They say Trevor Story is a leader, great.
