Yanks make another trade:

Jose Trevino to the Reds for RH reliever Fernando Cruz.

Trevino is projected to earn 3.4-3.6 million in arbitration, so paying that much for a backup didn't seem feasible.

Cruz is a low-contact -- 37% K rate, 12 BB rate -- splitter specialist (40% of the time, .116 opponents' batting average), who has team control for the next four seasons and will likely be signed this year near the league minimum. 23 holds and 3 blown saves last year.

Trevino was a solid Yankee, especially in 2022, but I think this is a solid trade getting a cost-controlled relief arm for Trevino, who they wouldn't have resigned when he would have been a UFA after next season. Worst case scenario, it's a salary dump.

Last year, Devin Williams was 1st in the MLB w/ 15.8 K/9 and Fernando Cruz was 2nd w/ 14.7.

Add in Leiter Jr. (13.3) and Cousins (12.6), the Yankees' pen now has four of the top 17 leaders last year in K/9 rate.

Yanks get their 1B too.

Goldschmidt had a down year, but still mashed lefties and is a great defensive 1B. Low-risk.

Hearing it may help lure Arenado as well. Both not what they were but improvements in what we had.

That's cool.

It's not even Christmas and I'm pretty satisfied with the roster so far. The only glaring need is an infielder (2B or 3B, Jazz will play the vacant spot) and I can see the team picking up a reasonably priced outfielder too. Rotation looks good, but pitching depth, especially in the bullpen will be added.

The young Japanese pitcher would be another great gift!!

Get me Azaera (sp?) who can hit .320 any given year, need hitters don’t care if he’s only an average 2nd baseman!!’
mauconntan- - -After the fielding disaster in the 5th game of the WS NY doesn't need lousy fielders (no matter how good they hit) when they could get players that are good fielders as well as good hitters!
They've really improved the defense this off season let's finish the job!

Please show me the 3rd and 2nd baseman that are great hitters they can acquire who can do both very well? I mean if they don’t get Arenado or Bregman (who have both declined offensively but acceptable) for 3rd then who is the 2nd baseman who can field and hit? Stand pat on Cabrera and/or Lemaihue you failed. I get it on the obvious disaster but you need to score runs as well and need people on base. Continuing the .220 hitter pattern just won’t help them win any titles.

If you are talking about Arraez, then yes, I think he's a perfect fit as he's one of the best contact hitters in baseball.

Yes not an awful fielder probably similar to Torres but 70-80 points better hitter.

Typical Yankees sitting on their hands and Penny pinch being more concerned about staying under the luxury tax then win a World Series. The Dodgers on the other don't even know what the hell the luxury is or even the Mets for that matter. Yankees have made good moves this offseason but as always it's the moves they don't that cost them.

There are/were several choices:
Ha-Seong Kim INF was just taken off the board by signing with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Brendan Anderson of the Cardinals an OF/INF.
Nico Hoerner of the Cubs 2B/3B
Carlos Correa INF Twins
Jeff McNeill 2B/3B Mets
Kiki Hernandez INF/OF free agent
Ryan McMahon INF Rockies
There are a couple more but at 77 my memory is slipping away!

Again sorry to say none are good hitters Correa would be great if you need a guy who will play 80-110 games maybe less. Kiki Hernandez no thank you. Arraez can flat out rake consistently a piece of the game that’s been dramatically missing from this lineup. It’s a pretty please acquisition for me.

mauconnfan- - -I guess we'll have to agree to disagree!
I would take any of the above as better than what's on the roster now! By the way, O'Neill was the NL batting champion 2 years ago!
And Luis Arreaz can't play defense! He'd make a great DH!
And we have Stanton that can't play the field!
I really feel NY can get by with a lighter hitter with the lineup they now have!
And Steinbrenner sucks claiming poverty when the Yankees are the richest team in baseball! He's counting pennies!
If George was still alive we'd have won at least 3 WS since 2009!
The Dodgers are proving to their fans they want a WS Champion!
Hank's after his 2nd Billion $!

McNeill? Nice on the title how’s he been since? He’s not a good fielder and he batted .238 last year show me Arraez and his worse season, maybe .299? Need hitters badly.

We agree on Hank he sucks!

Interesting flier pickup. Hasn't had a good season since 2022, but worth a shot.

6-18 with about a 6 ERA the last 2 years. I’m waiting for a .190 hitter for 3rd base next as Cashman tries to negate anything good he may have done.

Umm ok, good move I guess a no risk move. Signing injury prone players a Cashman specialty.

Low cost move with minimal possible reward. I imagine we'll see him in the bigs mid June and by late July he'll be designated for assignment.
