Could we get some run support for this guy? Please?

ETA: Well that worked well! Now maybe a couple more…and hold them…

Well that's what you get for still pretending Stephen Nogosek is a major league pitcher

If the playoffs started tomorrow, I’d have Walker as the odd man out of the starting rotation. These early inning hits/runs in bunches are killers.

It's a troubling start to the second half for him again, but I liked that neither he nor the team seemed rattled by it and that they actually made a decent game of it to the point where I thought we were going to come back. Nice job by the bullpen, too.

I'm very curious to see how it goes for Peterson's start in the first game today.

So you get into the postseason and your pen gets Peterson, Walker, Megill, May, Ottavino, Lugo and the jury is out what Givens has up his sleeve. Glad we didn’t give up anything stupid at the deadline. That’s way way more than you need in a series.

Add Drew Smith once he gets healthy too. And as much as I wanted a lefty reliever added at the deadline, the 3 batter rule makes it a little easier to get by without one

So far so good for Peterson’s start today; he’s had a little traffic but no harm yet.

I just don’t like him as our lefty out of the pen. I get that some teams like the Nats don’t have any, but our sights are set a good deal higher than theirs.

Like most rotations and pens, getting and staying healthy will be the key to ours.

Sounds like a sour ol' Mets fan. This team is different.

That’s an odd read; just because I don’t like Peterson as our lefty reliever?

You’re barking up the wrong tree here pal.

Not having a stopper lefty out of the pen doesn’t worry me in the least. Ask the Yankees and Braves how that worked.

Peterson has more value as a starter. Megill seems like the guy more likely to be more effective as a reliever and I’m excited to see how he does down the stretch.

Ok.

Peterson has more value as a starter
This is my point. I think he’s much better as a starter than out of the pen. I haven’t studied the numbers but that’s my impression.

And if we shorten the rotation and keep him on the staff, by necessity that means he is our lefty reliever.

It’s not a fatal flaw, but I’m all about trying to eliminate chinks in the armor as we eye the playoffs and potential matchups with teams like the Astros, who have vexed us; and the new Padres, who are a whole lot different team than the team we faced in the first half.

3.17 ERA in 71 innings as a starter and 4.50 ERA in 8 innings as a RP so he's been better as a SP but that's a very small sample. For his career it's actually the reverse and a 3.00 ERA as a RP, but again very small sample with 12 innings

The larger point is that there's very little use for a lefty specialist anymore. We may not have a tough lefty to come out of the pen to face Matt Olson and I don't want Peterson in that role, so on that we agree. But it's not because I don't think Peterson is a good RP, it's because any lefty will now have to stay in and face Austin Riley and his 1.200 OPS against lefties right behind Olson. Dodgers and Padres set up their lineup the same way

Yeah the three-batter minimum certainly changes the calculus. The vision of Peterson’s hand shaking after he gave up back-to-back HRs to the Yankees in relief is the thing that stands out to me; iirc he did get the next out though. And then Buck pulled him for Lugo, who very timely gave his best performance of the season.

Anyway, we are who we are and I like where we are right now.

I don’t want to get greedy as we sit on three of four in this Braves series, but I really hope they give Jake some early run support today.

Yeah, we’re going to pay Jake a ton of money.

If he keeps up like this it will be an easy decision.

Oh, and we’re going to pay Diaz a ton, too.

Possibly the biggest starter and reliever contracts ever.

Four of five is beautiful.

.-.
Feel like this series should silence any doubters, this team is legit. Still a long way to go and I bet the Braves still make it interesting but this team showed they belong with the best

The Braves can go get fattened back up on the Sox and other also rans. They aren’t going to forget what max, Jake and Edwin just did to them.

I guess I’m not as analytic right now. It’s been a long time since I felt like we could walk in and no one else’s best could match ours. Could there be an at bat at some point where we “could” have had a better option for? Absolutely. I’m more at the point of whoever wants some can come get some and we’ll beat them.

I mean, if Jake is dealing like today and Max is Max, there is every reason to have that feeling.

It’s what we hoped for, but it felt like it might never happen.

Two Cy Youngs is the best two-game opening lineup you could ever hope for.

ETA: Today’s win was really brilliant on so many levels.

And props to Joely, a lefty out of the pen!

I'll tell you what. It's gotten to be a sideshow to watch them make a starting pitcher rack up the pitch counts like they do. 72 pitches in 4 innings. 32 pitch first innings. 8-9-10 pitch at bats. What a fun friggin weekend of baseball. Wow.
