Tarris “Big Hoss” Reed is Returning

Johnson was a pick and roll guy ending with a slam which happened early in games, after timeouts like Hurley said to run it. Reed is a back to the basket player.
My question is this, if Reed is guarding a center with no threat to shoot 3’s what is the benefit of him going out to guard the guy when he’s setting a pick for other players?
Reed then has to fall back to the rim and would often be late getting there to get a rebound.
Of course we have seen him out beyond the 3 point line reaching in for bad fouls.
This changes if Reed’s guy can make a 3.

100% agreed on all of this. What I am desperate for them to stop is to have Tarris try to reach in and get a steal as often as he does. Maybe it worked once or twice but more often it led to a reach-in foul or just pulling him off-balance a little and making it harder to recover. I just don’t know that it really adds to the disruption, though I’m also not sure if those are by design or those are just Tarris going off script.

Whaley was maybe the best I've ever seen at any level of basketball with this. Seems like Dan took the success from that and is carrying it over to everyone else besides Clingan.

I don't like to question Dan defensively much because his teams consistently play some of the best defense. Wouldn't mind Reed playing more drop and saving the high hedge for more athletic/mobile players like a Samson or Whaley.

We need a muscle PF/C, and I can only imagine Hurley’s dad (LOL) is saying that too. This Luke M Euro Ball only goes so far.

It took us there with a certain type of player. It seems like we’re bringing in guys to go all in on this euroball style that was not the type of player we won with.

Like we wont recruit a guy who can't shoot even though two of the biggest pieces to those teams were Castle and Jackson.

You need to re-read my post / I did not knock anyone. The Hurley’s father reference goes back to the press conference when Dan took the job, when his father, from Jersey City, made the reference the team needed more muscle. I did not criticize Luke’s Euro Ball, just that it can only take the team so far, without an inside prescence which we had with Adama and Donovan.

You criticize the "Euro Ball" approach every chance you get. You can go watch tapes of 90s Knicks games if that makes you happy, but the rest of the world has moved on.

We didn’t play Euro ball in ‘23. It was a combo. We fed the best big man the ball and surrounded him with shooters.

You definitely recruit players that have Castle and Jackson’s mindset and skill set. It’s not even a question.

Even in 24. And I agree that we should but the staff and the prevailing thought on this board has strayed away from guys like that and players in general that can't shoot.

Chief loves a high assist content offense but agree having an inside content is what often frees up shooters. I think that impacted Karaban last season when there wasn’t enought focus on getting Reed the ball either because he wasn’t in the game due to fouls or due to the desire to have Johnson chase guards at halfcourt.

Agreed. Inside outside is the best kind of game to play.

The problem is execution--often by the corner helper who should be rotating and communicating. Solo was not good at that in particular.

How do you define an unsuccessful high hedge? To most on here, it’s probably not about proper execution, and more about our big picking up a silly foul away from the hoop because they were slow to move their feet. Personally, I don’t mind the high hedge at all but those sort of fouls drive me crazy.

I define that as a foul, or the action resulting in a good shot. So if they get a layup or a 3 (even if it's miss) I'll count it as a bad defensive hedge. If the other team reverses the ball 3x, we reset the defense and they still score, I won't count it as a bad high hedge.

There's some subjectivity to it.

With the shooters Tarris will have around him. Keep thinking what an occasional 4 out -Him in the paint set- is gonna do to opposing defenses. Virtually unstoppable. Change of pace concept based on matchups of course-but still intriguing. BTW- Reibe in the same set will be devastating as well. Gonna be fun.

Reibe will be playing in a 5 out offense similar to what the Celtics do with his skillset. DIfferent type of player than Tarris. I love the versatility between our 2 bigs.
 
At his best this past season, Reed was one of the best bigs in the country. If he just becomes more consistent, he’ll be an absolute monster. If he can expand his game on top of that, we’re talking all American level player.

If Tarris is in foul trouble say in the first half and Reibe needs to come out of the game our “small” lineup of Karaban, Solo, Silas, Stew and Mullins doesn’t sound too terrible or even this new 6’8” Koroma in there?
