For all the flexing of muscles over there regarding the ACC, I'd be scratching my head at the top 25 if I didn't know any better:

AAC - 3 teams
ACC - 2 teams

I mean, they can rub Tulane and Houston in our faces if they want, but aside from the Duke games, it isn't like they have an incredibly marquee slate lined up once January rolls around. There is a lot of mediocrity in that conference.

I'm just thrilled to death that they stumbled into that one championship. You don't get the chance to say "Syracuse" and "champion" in the same sentence all that often.

They weren't very good - hell, if you tried to name the last ten or fifteen champions, you'd probably forget that team all together - but they had pluck.

And with pluck and a ridiculously favorable NCAA draw, even a marginal bunch can do great things.

Well, maybe not great exactly, but good enough.
This post is now on syracuses blog. Just wanted to let you know

I wouldn't put money on Syracuse choking because it seems with each passing year teams look more and more clueless against their zone. Took a great effort from Ohio State to keep them out of 2 straight Final Fours. The increasing inability of teams to handle their zone is probably good to get to atleast the Sweet 16 every year.

I wonder what some of these coaches are doing to prepare against it. Certainly whatever Crean does doesn't work. Seems they were just as pathetic against it as in the tournament last year.

I for one can't keep one of their games on. The second Katz started hyping the excitement over the ACC move made me turn the channel. I am at the point with both Syracuse and BC in all sport where I can't even watch them on TV because they literally make me sick at first sight.
Let's be clear: major conference teams look more clueless because they have younger and younger players. But, when they do lose early, it's usually not to major conference teams. It's to teams like mid to low major teams like Vermont who have shooters to bust the zone and some experience.

So you're saying there won't be T-shirts the first time Clemson comes to town?

OK- I am gonna be snarky. Quse is over rated this year and will choke in the NCAAs like they do most years. When JB retires they will fad into obscurity - I see a similar path as BC. Never has there been a fan base more full of themselves over next to nothing. I hope they enjoy being a perpetual bottom dweller in the years to come. We may be in a crap conference but we are a program with energy and momentum (A NC in 2011 means we are do for another on or before 2016 -DOOMED). They are peaking right now and have some talented players but quite frankly they are still boring to watch. YAWN. PE-Toowey!!! I spit on them and their boring marginally above average program.

It's not snarky when you objectively speak truths.

I admit - they are in a much better conference. But I will bet that we will have a much better program moving forward once Ollie settles into the job for a few years.

All things considered, the Syracuse University Men's Basketball program is the most overrated program in all of collegiate sports. They have managed to establish this myth of being a storied program by accomplishing very little over a long period of time. To me, the only thing I see them good at is throwing stones at glass houses. The one thing they have been able to clearly establish is that over this same time, they remain one of the dirtiest and corrupt programs that most insiders will vouch for. Don't let that cunning coach of theirs fool you.

If I had to pick between being in UConn's situation or Cuse's situation, I'd still choose UConn despite our conference situation. Cuse's only redeeming quality is their conference affiliation. That can always change for the good for UConn or for the worse for Cuse.

UConn has done a tremendous job of ensuring that our basketball legacy will stay in national prominence. Between a new practice facility and a new, likable, up-and-coming head coach who recruits all seem to love, UConn's arrow is pointing up. Not sure I can say the same about Cuse.

I hope we do see them in the tournament as they'd honestly be a good matchup for a team like us. They don't really have much of a frontcourt. I'd love to watch UConn pick apart their crappy zone. With our shooters plus Deandre in the middle of that zone, we'd match up well.

I'd like our chances over them in March because, well, they're awful in March. Plus I'd rather see them over a team with an imposing front court that can hurt us inside

I dislike Cuse fans as much as most, but they have a solid team this year. They will beat a lot of high major teams with their zone and frontcourt depth. The low-major teams they will beat with their press. They will have trouble against a more mature team who can shoot.

IU was a fantastic matchup for them. Team with one shooter who is also the PG, whose strength is rebounding with athleticism and not height. Not to mention a very young team.

UConn would appear to be a tougher matchup, shooters from 4-5 positions on the floor at all times. 2-3 competent ball handlers to negate the press, and a more mature team. It's one of the reasons UConn tooled them last year. The difference this year is that Ennis is much less of a gambler than the thief and it appears they are getting better production from Cooney and their bigs.

Their biggest flaw is their lack of PG depth, but they play a zone which makes it a bit easier on the legs for 49 minutes a night. If Ennis gets injured, they are screwed.

One of the biggest reasons I want UConn to join the Big 10 and not the ACC is to leave Syracuse in ACC Siberia. Its often understated, but Syracuse's long term status is directly linked to UConn filling that ACC geographical gap. If not, in five-ten years they become the poor mans BC.

It truly amazes me how much better they feel their program is than ours. The levels of stupidity are astounding. If they wanted to say they were on the same level as us it would be delusional but much more acceptable then their belief that Quse is better than UConn.

Jim Calhoun's turds could out coach the nose picker.

How many times are they going to bring up the laptop stuff when their program has had numerous accusations of sexual assaults including against minors. One crime is much worse than the other in my opinion. Also, its not like their players haven't been accused of stealing stuff.

The only fanbase that could overlook that they had a pedophile as their long time assistant/best friend of the coach to laugh at our laptop scandal. This rap sheet makes our program look like it was run by Mr. Rogers.

They have a total of 5 NBA players on the NBA. I think this is more than usual, and Michael Carter Williams actually looks really good so they are going to have 2 good in the NBA at the same time! I don't consider team cancers who hide from their team claiming to be sick as good players (Waiters).

At least they have this guy as their next head coach. I'm sure elite recruits will be lining up for a chance to play for this lifelong, anonymous assistant.

Anything wafting from Cuse's direction always reminds me of this famous sports quote:

I can't really hear what Jeremy says, because I've got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ears.

Hey guys i'm new to the boneyard. UCONN class of 2008. I love this post and to add I think Cuse has the the most delusional and overrated program. I don't think they are even the 2nd best program in the old big east.

They lost MCW and their center, and UConn took them to the cleaners last year by shooting right over that zone.

How the heck is that assistant going to recruit players to that tundra in CNY? They will fall behind soon, esp. in the ACC which is like death to former BE schools.

TGFO (FO = for Ollie). He is bringing in some recruits the next few years in Ali, Hamilton, Purvis and Cassell, and with success, kids are going to lineup to play for a player's coach who has NBA credentials.

As moribund as the UConn fans are when not playing elite competition, I couldn't help but note the stark difference in the enthusiasm of the students and crowd at Gampel as opposed to the Carrier Dome when the teams played Florida and Indiana. Getting 20k for basketball consistently is very impressive--very few can do it (then again, living in Syracuse there's little else there)--but the place itself is sterile.

They lost the thief, Southerland and Triche. They returned all three centers, two of which look improved.

Improved for a Syracuse center is a relative term, though. It's crazy how they have guys on the inside who can play 25-30 minutes and you basically never hear their name called. Their job is to clog up space. Really weird why a top big guy prospect would want to go there.

Their spiedie sauce is better than ours. That's about it, tho.

Looks like they take a lot of pride in that win ticker alone.

I don't disagree.

Coleman was a McDAA who was out of shape his entire freshman year, couldn't even play the center of the zone and couldn't run the floor. Now he can play some defense (not great but not horrible) and is in better shape (he's not Josh Smith anymore).

Christmas was also a McDAA, I believe. ExCuse fans have been saying he's NBA talent for years, he has gone from poor to mediocre.

Keita was the lowest ranked of the three, he is about the same. Solid defense, horrid offense (air balling layups on the regular).

Their centers are by no means the stars for their team, but they are better than last year.

Cooley has been surprisingly solid also.

Like I said, their fans are morons, but they have a decent squad this year and no one I hate (unlike other years).

MCW is a very talented player but he was also a bit of an idiot and a bad shooter, Ennis has been very good for them so far.

I do like UConns matchup with them, their bigs aren't a big enough threat to worry to much about, unless Coleman or Chrstmas makes a leap.

Carmelo Anthony personifies Syracuse -- thought of as talented yet extremely overrated. If you keep telling a lie, eventually it becomes true?
