St. John's Post Game Thread

The Mullins hype train has to be dead by now, especially in such a loaded draft. I've been in the "he's a lottery pick" camp most of the season but you have to believe your eyes at this point.

I've always been a proponent of guys leaving early as soon as they have the chance, but Mullins is the rare situation where I don't think his stock could possibly get any lower.

I thought Bouk, Hawkins, Liam, etc. made the right decision. I think Mullins leaving would be the wrong choice for him.

He's a wildly streaky shooter with a funky shot. He has no other strengths in the college game, let alone the NBA. He's just not (yet) the shotmaker he appeared to be early in in the season.

I'm not sure I would take him in the top 20. He hasn't shown enough of a consistent outside shot and really can't take anyone off the dribble. He needs weight. I can see 20-30 is where he should go. If that is good enough for him than yeah he isn't coming back. The kid is going between 10-18 and is only 18yo. He will make millions and develop with professionals and fill out his body. He is a different class of player than anyone on our roster.

He 100% should go. He is the exact type of prospect, at the right age, with the precise skills, the NBA wants. Hawkins was not nearly the prospect this kid is.

What this team doesn’t do well:

Physicality

Poise

Hunger

Have a heart

Pace

Box out

Inbound passes

FTs

Self Belief

Show up in big games

Run

This may be a down and out overreaction, but this team needs to be gutted. I’m just utterly baffled at how horrible we have been. I’m over this euro offense bs. Get guys who can actually run, go downhill, have some balls, and fight to the death. I don’t need this team to become the Brian Cashman Yankees of the last 10-15 years.

The Euro offense is fine, it’s just not having any players that can deviate from that. If the sets collapse, the play dies. Not to mention it’s incredibly hard to pull off, you need at least one player that can score in a different way.

Still holding out for Silas even if next year. I think he has it, but needs to be more decisive and confident.

People have good reason to be disappointed in this team’s performance tonight. They came out looking sluggish, not ready to play, and didn’t come close to matching St. John’s intensity. Hurley got outcoached. Badly. But after the 10-0 run to start the game, UConn actually played SJU evenly til about 6 minutes left in the game - despite playing like dogsh!+e the entire 40 minutes.

This team has been a total enigma all season. There were even signs early on in their quality wins - like the second half against BYU. But I do believe that a LOT of people are overreacting tonight. UConn gets an entirely different whistle on both ends during NCAA tournament play. The only real question that remains… does this team have the heart and ‘nads to pick themselves up after getting emasculated by SJU and start anew later this week.

Again.

What does he do well?

Average ball handler, below average defender, not a plus-athlete. Not a particularly gifted passer. Physically, he’s more high school than college, let alone NBA - he’s just weak. He can’t get to the rim against decent defenders - guy has taken 25 free throws all season because he avoids contact like grim death.

He needs to come back in the worst way. Pocket a few million here next season and then go
Well he was labeled an elite shooter with a quick release as what he does that is NBA quality. I know the results haven't always shown that but I think he is also a better athlete than you are giving him credit. He is 6'6" too. Problem is he super thin and can't take any physical play though his defense has been better including this game. I do agree he should come back but I think he will be like Liam and leave and get drafted in the 20-30 range.

Right now, the idea of Mullins is more enticing than the reality of him, and I'm not talking about potential. He looks the part in many ways and has shown glimpses of great shot making ability, but right now it's just few and far between.

Hawkins at least had one NBA skill, if only one. Mullins has zero, yet I agree long term he's easily the better prospect.

I disagree with that. Mullins is just a good of a shooter as Hawkins. Now I will say Hawkins is more polished player but he was also a Sophmore. If you were comparing Freshman Mullins Vs. Hawkins it is Mullins in a landslide.

We recently lost to horrendous Creighton and Marquette teams. I don't know how anyone could be shocked if we lose in the opening round.

Totally delusional. Mullins Will go the way of McNeeley and play very little in his first year. While Dybantsa, Peat, Boozer and others prove themselves legit first rounders.

Mullins has good basketball instincts and IQ. He is a good passer. He gets in passing lanes and anticipated well defensively despite not being an elite athlete. He has a midrange game and a floater. There are things he does well now beyond shooting from deep outside.

We got our asses kicked in by a very physical team that shut us down. St Johns will go as far as refs let them in the NCAA tournament. There are multiple situations where refs could easily call foul but Big East refs let it go. We just need to move on and get ready for the NCAA. We just need to start a run in the worst way when the tournament starts.

Oh yeah, people that think Mullins is ready for the NBA is just delusional. I don't even think he is first round at this point unless a team really wants to take a chance on him. He can't create on his own, and his defense is below average right now. He needs to stay in college to get stronger, learn to drive better, and play better defense.
