St. John's Post Game Thread

All of our weaknesses were exposed tonight. We were out toughed especially in the paint. We aren't talented enough to finesse everyone. Need to match the aggressiveness of opponents (Silas was aggressive but let them pick his pocket). Inbounding the ball. Poor free throw shooting (not going to go too far post season with that). Our fouls discrepancy is often a case of not getting in front and staying in front of opponents. Lack of execution. We had a chance at the end but too many starters had very deep minutes. Bench too underused against a highly aggressive team that speeded up the game. (Malachi) only played four minutes. We have won the NC in years where Rick's team and up-tempo kicked our aXX bad so give the devil his due. We have another game with them in CT as well as maybe the BE Tournament. Silas 9 turnovers?

I haven’t seen a worst officiated game in college hoops this year. Can’t win missing free throws and turning the ball over if the other team is allowed to hold and grab and you can’t touch them. Tonight doesn’t change anything about this team being a contender. At John’s did nothing but add to their resume.

This is a game where we could have used Karoma. Did we forget that we beat a lot of very good teams without Reed using Karoma. Reed was awful tonight. He's a liability at the FT line, so many turnovers and how many times can you hedge out 40 feet and lose your man for an easy layup. I also wouldn't mind seeing Millander getting minutes from Smith. Smith dribbles way too much and never finishes at the basket but he keeps forcing.
The answer is 0. I guess if you want to argue he played noteworthy minutes against Kansas it's 1 but Koroma has been non-existent against the top teams

17 points on 7-10 shooting and 3-4 behind the arc. AK was great. Not perfect. His frustration foul that sent SJU to the line late was dumb. But overall typical solid and reliable effort. No complaints from me.

Demary was both great and frustrating. He played with a lot of heart but 9 turnovers? And two of them resulted in fast break buckets. And his missed FT's late, including the front end of a 1-1 that cost us a chance for 2 pts? Ugh!
Great points and I appreciate the objective stats. But I’m more referencing the intangibles! The fire! The fight!! When’s the last time you’ve seen AK dunk on a player and chirp and pump up his teammates. He’s a nice dog but sometimes his team needs him to be junkyard dog. That’s all I’m saying.

Holding and grabbing has been happening all year. This is the first game this year that I've seen a jersey pull on a screen called. Worst game called all year? Not sure you've watched many games.

I'd be open to playing a smaller lineup against SJU given how aggressive they flash out to ball screens on the perimeter.

Hey moron who argued that missing FT’s wasn’t a big deal, where are you now???? This was a tied game after a terrible first half, and this team came back flat as S—. Well now they know better. My guess is we beat this team by 10 plus next time. A few more points:
—Mullins is not ready to leave. He can’t get his own shot. I hope his family knows better than Liam’s.
—our bench needs to be more assertive. Malachi did nothing. Reibe looked overmatched. Not a single bench player did a thing offensively.
—we got punked on the boards. And to you nerds, I haven’t seen the stats, but i saw the game, and they got every damn board that mattered. And if you have seen my posts, missing layups, missing FT’s and getting outhussled are my triggers. F—— I am going to bed mad tonight.
—and despite all of that, this loss may be our last. I get that sense that this team will use this as fuel the way that the 1985 team Bears lost on week 13. The key will be getting more shots for Mullins, who is obviously out best player. Good night…s———-!!!!’

We didn’t lose the 1 seed by losing to a 4 seed on the road. Unless you think the others are going undefeated the rest of the way?
No but we may need to run the table, anything more than 1 more loss will likely end our bid for a 1 seed.

You beat me to it... He literally did not play a meaningful minute in any of our big wins. Man, this place just gets worse and worse.

Not a resume ruining loss, but it could cost a #1 seed with the Big East being weak and the race for a #1 seed being so loaded.

WGAF if he chirps. Silas and Red did and still got beat

Duke and Michigan play eachother in a couple of weeks

Michigan also plays Illinois and Nebraska again

So a 1 seed is still very much in play.

Michigan could lose to Duke and Illinois and still be a 1 ahead of us. Zona too could afford to lose to Kansas and ISU. We put ourselves on the 1 seed bubble but of course it depends on other teams now.

42% from the FT line is going to keep me up tonight. Tarris is just too big a liability at the line.

The best Malachi has looked the past month or so was when he and Silas played together. His constant ball pounding until then clock is under 8 seconds drives me crazy. It’s like he feels if he gives it up the ball he won’t get it back.
It doesn't look like he knows what to do. He is afraid of ball pressure so he dribbles backward, 40 feet from the basket.

Demary realized the Defense was taking away the lob to the big so he started driving all the way to the rim. Smith really struggles to finish around the basket. He is way too small. He has a higher shooting percentage from 3 than he does from 2, because he only takes 3's when he is wide open. He shoots from his chest, leaning forward similar to Andre Jackson's form. Unfortunately he is a foot shorter than AJ and no where near the athlete.

Others have way more opportunities to improve/solidify themselves. We don't.

Hurley got out coached

I don’t agree with this. You can’t control your players turning the ball over stupidly or making free throws. If they are better protecting the ball, especially in the first half and 80% FT Silas hits FTs you’d never have posted that.
