St. John's Post Game Thread

17 points on 7-10 shooting and 3-4 behind the arc. AK was great. Not perfect. His frustration foul that sent SJU to the line late was dumb. But overall typical solid and reliable effort. No complaints from me.

Demary was both great and frustrating. He played with a lot of heart but 9 turnovers? And two of them resulted in fast break buckets. And his missed FT's late, including the front end of a 1-1 that cost us a chance for 2 pts? Ugh!
How was AK on defense? Not impressive!

I felt Zuby was putting more pressure on Reed to foul than the other way around. Reed is great but he doesn't draw enough fouls. Of him going to the line more is not our best chance to score points. He missed some close ones that have been falling the past few games. Maybe it is the better D or maybe it is just the law of averages. No one shoots 95% like he has done the past 3 games!

Too many turnovers. Missed free throws. 5/13 I think with many front ends missed.

Disappointed but they will be fine overall. We weren’t getting through the big east undefeated.

Bad game for Silas and Reed continues to have zero touch/mobility around the rim.
Zero touch, how does he shoot around 70% around the rim?

The fact that we don't have a reliable 6th man is also a problem. 6 points from the bench is atrocious. Need Stew and/or Ross to stop being passengers.
100. I know bench/role players play better at home than on the road, but with this unit it is extreme. Remember, in the AMP PC's bench outscored UConn's bench 41-3.

Malachi was off tonight, but we probably would have had a much worse loss against Providence last month if he hadn't played his best game of the year. Hopefully he and the team will both bounce back quickly. I'm looking forward to a payback game in a few weeks to shut the obnoxious Johnnies fans up (more so than their players who I mostly like)

Pitino has his players turn the thugball setting up to 11 and it makes every one of these games competitive, especially with Big East refs

Heading back home…msg was great but beat up two johhny fans outside pretty good (heheh kung teacher here) they deserved it according to everyone.

anyway refs ..cannot say bought off but watch replay near end for demary’s foul shot they were two feet in the lane but no whistle compared to fouls against us we barely brushed them and whistled. Foul shooting disparity for sure.

Gonna regroup for next game but we owe them when we play them at home!

I was worried early in the second half about the amount of energy Silas was exerting on every inbound play. It wore him out causing him to miss free throws. He left everything on the floor.
Exactly. Problem is we don't have anyone else to give the ball to who can run our offense.

There goes the 1 seed. Hopefully we don’t run into another team this physical until the final 4. We’re way too small on the perimeter for some of these teams.
The 1 seed definitely isn't gone yet. There's still a gap between the top 4 teams and everyone else right now thanks to the Huskies win over Illinois and ISU's awful loss to Cincy

If Darling is going to play like that it changes everything. My knock on them was lack of pg play. He’s been great since the new year
Major defensive liability though, which is why Silas was able to drive at will

Aside from the turnovers both teams drove the ball to the hole. One team got 31 fts and one got 12. It was very physical on both sides. Their pressure bothered us. Wonder Hurley’s take?

If we win out I think we still get a 1 seed. But another loss, which is statistically probable, and I agree the 1 seed is probably gone.

All of our weaknesses were exposed tonight. We were out toughed especially in the paint. We aren't talented enough to finesse everyone. Need to match the aggressiveness of opponents (Silas was aggressive but let them pick his pocket). Inbounding the ball. Poor free throw shooting (not going to go too far post season with that). Our fouls discrepancy is often a case of not getting in front and staying in front of opponents. Lack of execution. We had a chance at the end but too many starters had very deep minutes. Bench too underused against a highly aggressive team that speeded up the game. (Malachi) only played four minutes. We have won the NC in years where Rick's team and up-tempo kicked our aXX bad so give the devil his due. We have another game with them in CT as well as maybe the BE Tournament. Silas 9 turnovers?

I haven’t seen a worst officiated game in college hoops this year. Can’t win missing free throws and turning the ball over if the other team is allowed to hold and grab and you can’t touch them. Tonight doesn’t change anything about this team being a contender. At John’s did nothing but add to their resume.
