St. John's Post Game Thread

While a few people want this coaching staff shot out to the moon after this season's performance, I think this year is a blessing in disguise and will bring them back to the idea of UConn championship DNA in that they do have to mix in some junkyard dogs to go along with the offensive players they are looking for.
I must have all those posters on ignore. They’re still the best coaching staff in the country. You cant polish a turd.

If I'm Duke I don't wanna see the Johnnies in my bracket.
I would root like HELL for St John’s. I think they could bully their way into a win. Duke hasn’t seen pressure like that since Auburn months ago

There were so many things not positive with this “team”, and maybe due to injuries not enough time to fix them and to integrate the new guys and the sophamores into a team. I have begun to fear that we would not even make a good NIT team. Of course a NIT appearance would depress our guys and coaches into a deeper hole. I really wish that I am all wrong and will be surprised with at least a little bit of a victory.

Furphy has an NBA body while Nowell is undesized. I wouldn't go by ratings as many haven't see Furphy play. He isn't that athletic but is on of those foreign players who can create offense and shoot.

Furphy does not have an NBA body. He's a chunker. He'll need to be focused on his diet

Team is too flawed. Even the Creighton game was fools gold. Creighton shot absolutely terrible and McNeeley had an other wordly game but I never felt the team looked great.

Samson Johnson isn't a starter playing starter minutes. What was up with him holding some guys ankles while on the ground? Surprised he didn't get a flagrant from it. Too many role players. This was an easy scout for Pitino. 1 trustworthy ball handler

Very disappointing game today. Not because we lost, but the way we played. At no time did it feel like UConn had a chance to win.

Very disappointed in Hurley's coaching, recruiting & player development this year. His whole demeanor seemed to change with the Lakers/New Contract news cycle. He didnt seem hungry (just angry) at any point this year, and it reflected on the team.
We should can him. Time for a total rebuild. (Sarcasm )

I agree started at Maui and I believe that Maui was was not a fluke. I had the bad feeling even back then that Maui was a bad sign of things to come and. not a good forecast of our future back then. Injury to Mcneeley stagnated his development and just confounded by what is really wrong with AK. And yes this team is flawed. That incessant three peat talk was no help and maybe a negative down side to motivation. It’s like maybe this “team” played as it they were entitled.
They arent’t talented enough to be entitled. In addition to the lack of talent and roster issues, they have to deal with the weight of unfair expectations.

I was there. St. Johns was just flat out better. We can't score. We cannot continue to commit 18 turnovers and expect to win. There were so many chances to gain back the momentum with a wide open 3, only to hear "clang...uggg," followed by a St. Johns wide open 3.

Taliek being on Ricks staff is a big deal btw. Let's not forget Iona having a 1 pt lead on us in 2023 tournament, and the 2 games vs St Johns which were competitive.

It's not hard to beat UConn when the other team can consistently go in for layups. Hurley should've mixed up his defense, played some zone, to keep it close.

Hurley was throughly outcoached today.
Absolutely need to play some Zone vs St. Johns. St Johns will get knocked out of NCAA by at team that can play a good zone. They shot well from the 3 today but coming in they were last in big East in 3 pt shooting

Let’s stop the ridiculous talk saying they are an NIT team…..they have 5 quad 1 wins which is tied for 22nd and are 36 in Kenpom. They played 8 games without their best player, have 7 losses by 6 or less and have played with a banged up backcourt.

And yes this is a team has a lot of flaws, no need to rehash them…..we all know that.

But not far fetched that they can’t win out the next 4 with 3 at home and get some momentum going into the Big East tournament.

Let’s not write off the season yet.

Congrats on your victory where’s your Redstorm gear.
On an earlier variant of this board during Coach Calhoun days, criticizing the coach earned a death to the messenger,no answer to the issues the”messenger” put forth.
Simply lazy or ignorant.

Pitino brought in players who, 1-4, have enough lateral quickness to switch and cut off drives. They give up nothing easy on D. There were so many times when we finally did get half a step to the hoop where we were bodied, fumbled the ball, or got the shot blocked. And if none of those things happened our finishing at the rim was weak.

That said, we are a good shooting team from 3 but were way off while the worst shooting team in the Big East from 3 shot 50%. Sometimes it’s like that.

I’ll be really glad when Richmond graduates. He beats us on drives consistently, finishes at the rim and draws fouls. Ugh.

A road loss against the #9 team isn’t a killer. There are four games left. Paraphrasing Jake Taylor, guess there’s only one thing left to do. Win ‘em all and get to 14-6 entering the BET.

There’s talk about playing with violence. Time to get violent.

Why is Stewart so timid on offense in the last couple games? Zero shots today. He has to be more aggressive on offense.
Also, why does it also appear that Stewart seems to be always chasing his man who is dribbling to the hoop?

I really don't see it, and him going to the line in the first half and looking like Shaq is kinda indicative of where his confidence is.
Missing free throws was pretty much all he did wrong. For a team with no ball handling, your standards are too high.

I really miss the mad scientist “Jim Calhoun” using his timeouts and fiddling with his lineup until he finds something that clicks. When he did find that magic he rolled with it and didn’t care if you were a starter or not. The Win was more important than anything else. That random game at the dome vs Cuse watching Brian Fair go off for 31 points out of nowhere. Any given day someone may go off. We just ran the same 5/6 guys hoping for a different result.

That was legit crazy, he thought he was Durant there. It was nice to finally see some shots go down but the rest of the game I was scratching my head as to what he was doing out there. Getting blown by on defense, fumbling the ball, not being able to inbound, standing flat footed and losing rebounds that came right to him. It's legit sad watching AK on this team. I love the kid and want him back for a fresh start next season back in the role hitting shots and making winning plays we saw his first two seasons. This is a throwaway season for him.
It's no longer a slump for AK, it's a lost season for sure. Totally agree it's gut wrenching to watch him struggle every single game.

Calhoun had his down years where it fell apart, most notably the Dyson and sophomore Kemba team. Last year was kind of an anomaly for this program where we didn’t step back after winning. But some other down years where nothing worked (often for being young):

1997 we had suspensions and Rickety and ended up really young.
2001 was the freshman Caron/Taliek team and senior Mouring. Didn’t come together.
2007 we were just super young. Our entire team was freshmen and sophomores - none of which were one and done
2010 we were a dumpster fire on top of a train wreck.
2012 we pretty much stunk with Drummond and Oriakhi trying to play alongside each other and did just enough to get in and then get crushed by Iowa State.

They were always years we bounced back from.

This season is probably the first time since 2nd or 3rd grade he is playing with doubt about what he is supposed to be doing. He is absolutely thinking instead of just doing. He's vapor locked.
