St. John's Post Game Thread

Agreed with the rest but Luis will be gone. Maybe Repole opens the checkbook and he reconsiders but Pitino has been openly talking about him leaving after the season all year
I haven't seen Luis on any mock drafts, he's got to develop a three point shot if he wants to play in the NBA.

I gotta give Pitino credit. All the years we'd roll into the Garden and dominate, I'd think "How does a St John's coach not take advantage of playing in this arena?", "How can we roll in here, fill the place and laugh the entire Metro North ride home?"

The cockroach that he is, he clawed his way back, took the opportunity and is positioned to have a run where that building is rocking. And I'm gonna say something I don't ever say. I don't want to see them in the BET. I don't think we can beat them this season the way things have unfolded.
Ironic that he didn't even want to play this game at MSG.

The 3 point shooting in the game was 26% for us and 42% for them.
Early on, some genius in the chat said pack it it, they can’t shoot from outside. That’s why we are on the chat and not actually coaching.

Johnnies are the best team by far in the conference this season, they're a top 10 team nationally and Pitino is just getting started there despite his age. Luis, Ejiofor, and Wilcher will be back next season as his core and he'll bring in top transfers again that fit what he wants to do.
Pitino has adapted his play style to his talent level; gritty half court defense, more emphasis on the mid range, and a smaller rotation.

Considering his history has been pressing, playing 8-10 players, and more 3-point shooting; he's done a great job this season.

As some have noted before, I believe our coaching staff will learn greatly from this season and adapt accordingly.

If any coaching staff has earned a mulligan season, Hurley and staff (though I don't like it), get a pass IMO.

This season is probably the first time since 2nd or 3rd grade he is playing with doubt about what he is supposed to be doing. He is absolutely thinking instead of just doing. He's vapor locked.
I believe there is something more worrisome going on than a half-season slump. This is now about a dozen+-game stretch where AK exhibits butterfingers receiving passes, holding onto rebounds and getting stripped on drives. More concerning is the fact that he frequently gets lost on defense, particularly on switches. And of course a 3pt shot that has mostly disappeared. I’m not a neurologist, nor do attempt to play one on the ‘yard… but I really wonder whether that concussion earlier in the season has had lasting effects.

Yeah i agree. Just too bad he didn't have a whole year to work on his game and develop more.
So before the season started he was a top 10 pick in The nba draft this year?

7 turnovers in the first 7ish minutes of the game… Just not enough dynamic guard play on this team & they really lack the physicality to play with a team like that when St Johns is humming like they were today. Gotta lock in and avoid the landmines coming up on the schedule. We know big changes are coming in the offseason, staff sees it, they aren’t dumb. They whiffed on their evaluations. Really shows how hard it is to be consistently good, year in/year out.
Well said

All you need to do to see how outmatched we were is watch every rebound in the game. SJU soared over us time and time again grabbing boards and making putbacks or gaining extra possessions. Their offensive rebounding was spectacular. I have no idea what the actual stats were but they got every important rebound. Every damn one. We were so outclassed athletically.

We outrebounded them 39-36. LOL!

Granted, they shot better so there were less offensive rebounds to be had.

We had many posts in the past saying that SJU, Georgetown, etc needed to return to form for the good of the Big East. That's the silver lining I'm taking from this. Good for the Big East.

Otherwise, I'll admit, I'm not wasting much time reading about what happened today. The first 7 minutes of the 2nd half was fun. Onto Georgetown.

Well some of us are repeating our comments. Medically I am barred from drinking alcohol so time to drown my sorrows about the game in some mindless movie and call it a night. Take care all!

The irony really is that for most of BE history the Johnies haven’t been very good.

I don’t think there is any fixing this team this year and if we make the tourney…..if then a win is possible but not assured. Anyone who even mentions 3 Peat again on this board needs to be committed to an insane asylum.
even if UConn wins the Gold Cup title? :p:p:p:p

Hurley screwed up royally with roster construction. He thought a slight kid from St. Mary's who can't play point guard was going to be our starting point guard. He thought a spot up shooter (AK) was going to be our do everything leader. He thought Ross would show he's an NBA player. He never addressed not having guys who can take people off the dribble. He started the wrong center all season. We don't have the ballhandlers/creators and the team is physically weak outside of Reed.

I'm excited about our recruiting class but I'm not seeing the strength/athleticism in them. Braylon has the athleticism and quick twitch but he's pretty slight. Question marks with the other guys.

Coach needs to stop doing interviews/writing books and needs to figure this out. We were physically manhandled and Pitino ate his lunch. Pitino is just getting started there despite his age.

St. John's has an identity and they never go away from it. You can hang with them if they shoot terribly but this was a physical mismatch. We are a team with no identity this season.

Props to Pitino and St. John's, they're really friggin' good and a fun team to watch.
That's they way Hurley's Rhode Island teams played - in your face defense.

I disagree. The Johnies were excellent under Louis Carnesecca. They were revived under Mike Jarvis. Then things went sideways. They suffered after Jarvis left but the program and were average to poor. Conference realignment affected all Big East programs no matter where they ended up.

Why is it saying Samson Johnson when I abbreviate Saint John’s lol. Just like it’s Dan Hurley when your abbreviating Designated Hitter. So I’ll abbreviate the 2 just to test it out.

SJ, Dan Hurley

One final four, maybe two BE championships total?

Loser mentality. I want to play them tomorrow. Stop with the lazy turnovers, and fumbling the ball. Stop smacking people on rebounds. Get out run and make open shots. Tall task but I absolutely want to play them

I was aware that we may have outrebounded them. That’s why I said I didn’t know the stats and said they got the important rebounds. They did. Whenever they missed and we were poised to grab a board and close the gap, they got it. They didn’t give up virtually any key boards. They were fighting and whenever we had a slight bit of momentum their intensity on the boards and on defense went way up. When it mattered, they were tougher.

Diarra was probably our leading rebounder or close to it. Those weren’t rebounds in the trenches. They were killing us right under the rim. Their offensive rebounding was very fruitful. We got junk offensive boards when missing 3 bunnies in a row.

They also turned us over a lot when we got key defensive rebounds. We just gave the ball right back without taking a shot.
