St. John's Post Game Thread

We lost to them by 6 a few weeks ago at home. The game could’ve gone either way for 35 minutes. St John’s had an out of body experience yesterday shooting wise for a 5 minute stretch. We played our C- game with another 18 turnovers many of which were just balls going through guys hands. Will it take an extraordinary effort to beat them? Absolutely but we’ve beaten better teams with less.
I hope you're right. Hey, maybe Aiden Mahaney will go for 30 too.

if AK had concussion symptoms then he would be on the bench in street clothes like Caroline Ducharme was for over a year. AK shot 1/8, 1/7 for 3 against one of the worst power conference teams in Colorado before the concussion against Dayton. AK was averaging about 16 a game on 40% from 3 with high volume well into the month of January before he went into his deep tailspin, his concussion symptoms didn't magically just re-appear, he's just playing like doodoo and now it's clearly in his head and affected his game. The boneyard has always had some coocoo for cocoa puff theories in my time posting here but the "AK is going through post concussion symptoms" in late January into February to explain his play is a true jump the shark moment for this board.
AH yes, "he's just playing like a doodoo". 15 yrs ago I coached an all-league kid in their junior year, who after a concussion was never the same their whole senior year. We didnt have the protocols then we have now, but he said he was good, never complained about headaches or vision issues etc. Concussion effects CAN linger. As I stated, i DONT think its the main reason, (hes pressing, doing too much of things he's not great at) but to completely dismiss it as a possible contributing factor to his regression is the type of uneducated idiotic analysis I've come to expect seeing recently on this board. He's clearly just playing like a doodoo to explain his complete regression lol. To label the possibility it might be affecting him as "jump the shark" is asinine to me.

"uneducated idiotic analysis". I'll take care of the issue for both of us so going forward you don't have to see my uneducated idiotic analysis you jackwagon

Not the best game to watch at a bar with one of my old UConn roommates. Just grotesque. Saw @Dove and @storrsroars mentioned me in the Chat. I was watching the game, unfortunately.

This is a bubble team at best right now. Even our shooters can't shoot. Can't inbound the ball. Not enough guys who are facilitators. Not strong enough. Not fast enough. The refs did us no favors and I hate the way St. Johns plays. They remind me of the Pitino Louisville team that beat us 3 times even though we won a national championship. Just foul 100 times a game and dare them to call it. I hope they get blown out in the first round of the tournament.

Just to be clear, no complaints with Hurley, coaches or their game plans and substitutions. I think we have the best and hardest working in the business.
Everyone has known the deficiencies and needs of the team and they like us fans have been hoping for a solution and someone to emerge but skill level, injury and intrinsic talent have plenty to do with it not happening.
I’m sure he’ll portal better next year and with a great recruiting class things will hopefully improve.

Typical overreaction in this thread. This is our first real loss by a significant margin since Liam has been back (and we were undefeated with him on the mainland before he got hurt).
that's some copium. Discounting losing to the hall because it was "close" lolol.

Side note about concussions and I hope AK is not affected by his. Andre Curbelo dismissed and some say his concussions may be the cause.

"But the dynamic, enigmatic point guard suffered a painful concussion in exhibition play ahead of a highly-anticipated sophomore season which forced him to miss 14 games in 2021-22 and derailed the preseason All-Big Ten candidate.

"Curbelo transferred to St. John's ahead of the 2022-23 season where ejections, technicals and suspensions marred his one-year stint under then-Johnnies coach Mike Anderson before parachuting to Southern Miss for the final two seasons."

That's why he wears the sunglasses inside. His concussion after effects make the bright lights difficult for him.

23 team had its losses too before they found themselves again. Have some faith.

It's a fair point. But the one thing that would actually make a difference? Mahaney puts on big boy pants. Nowell just ain't ready and Diarra is almost running on empty. The only thing that gives me hope about this is Mahaney is playing so far below his ceiling and talent level. Right now, he is free loading. If he could come anywhere near his play in the away game versus Xavier, Diarra is fresh all game.

I know this is highly unlikely. Mahaney wouldn't make a huge difference but it is somewhere in the realm of possible and would make us a better team.

Points off turnovers =14 - the game spread we lost by

We had turnovers due to our players rushing (e.g., getting a pass and looking before securing it) and losing the ball, no all were even forced. This seems pretty fundamental to most sports that you secure the ball then move, look, etc. It happened 6-8 time in the game (Saw Liam lose out of bounds, saw Diarra lose the handle, AK lose it, etc - was widespread). Only Nowell had zero turnovers handling the ball.

Where does this 355 number come from? There's 364 teams in D1.
I guess that is what I get for taking things verbatim from Dave Borges. Lol

St. John's entered Sunday's Madison Square Garden matinee with a statistic that would be good for a leadoff hitter in baseball but not so good as the 3-point percentage for a college basketball team.

.298. Dead-last in the Big East, and 341st in the country. There are only 355 teams in the country.

If they played against us every game they would be top 10 is shooting threes. We do not close out.

@HuskyHawk

I started the game with the intent of sipping a 17% abv stout over 2 hours. Game was so brutal that it didn't last 2 hours.

I just started watching uconn bball a few games ago.

i remember in years past, tristan newton would zing the ball perfectly like a quarterback, in transition or on a pick/roll. I noticed yesterday a couple pick/rolls where the ball was VERY late in getting to Samson Johnson or whoever was cutting down to the basket. Tristan would have lasered it in.

little things like that that showed me that this team is not seeing what past teams have seen and creating offense like they used to.

we are not a bad team, but definitely i have lost the hope for a 3-peat, based on the small sample size i have.

Having a first team All-American, Bob Cousy winner, and Final Four MVP who also happens to be 6-5 running your team is generally a good thing.

Good point. We had five offensive rebounds in one possession and ended up not scoring
Exactly. We technically outrebounded them but they were clearly superior rebounders and finishers. Their rebounding in traffic was nuts. The ball would be coming down to 3 blue jerseys and a Johny would rise 3 feet above the crowd and grab it with authority. They were just so much more athletic.

They just got 3 places in ranking to number 7 for beating an unranked team at home.

Bottom line...Kadary Richmond needs to conveniently disappear. He is the reason UConn lost twice to the Johnnies.

He knows how to beat us. And does so.

The only reason they moved up 3 spots was because the 3 teams directly ahead of them lost last week

I hate the Big East man. When will we finally be free from this place...it's like Val and the refs have it out for us
BE is like New York, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!

SJU will be the #1 seed and we’ll prob be the #4 seed. Usually it’s hard to beat a team 3 times but there’s no reason to think we’d beat them in the semis.
We beat SU three times the year they won it all with Carmelo
