South Carolina vs Maryland

Maryland didn't do much today to enhance Scar's win the other day by having to struggle to beat mid-major Fordham 83-76.
Too many turnovers. Fordham do have a very experienced team. three seniors and two graduates in the starting lineup.

Easy now. Our trolls own this board
His point was valid potentially, although we did have to beat SEVERAL top seeds to get to the finals. Overall though, any of the top teams can beat each other on a given day.

Look at Stanford's numbers after 4 games and especially Iriafen and Betts. People think Stanford is Jones and Brinks mainly but they have a lot of very strong supplementary players. As a team they are shooting .563. Team 3 point percentage after 4 games is .421. Brinks is averaging over 4 blocks a game.

Teams do not hit a high percentage or get a lot of attempts from the three against SC. SC plays a tight man to man and athletic enough to switch at all positions including Boston. It is very hard to get 3s in the halfcourt set. You may get them in transition, but you usually don't get good looks in the halfcourt. Every time SC graduate a point guard, in the beginning of the season the naysayers think it is going to be a weakness. You are making a lot of assumptions off of 1 game.
Some people here didn’t believe in Henderson until she became a giant slayer last year… they do this every year with SC. Before that, it was Ty and KiKi.. they weren’t “good enough”.. then they went off their senior season, just like Henny did.

SC has a system. We take advantage of our best players strengths. Right now, it’s not 3 point shooting.. it hardly ever is for us. Our style is not Princeton. It’s not UCONN. It’s not Notre Dame. People need to accept that because we keep winning regardless and plus variety is nice.

Abby Myers appears to be another player transferring from a mid-major to P5 and flourishing.
Who else besides her would you consider flourishing against P5 teams ?

Actually, good point. I guess I'm conflating certain games in which the opposing teams gets hot from 3 for a quarter or a half but it normally doesn't last for a whole game. Especially in some of those old Arkansas games over the years, that kept the game a little closer than they should be for a bit.
A team would have to get hot and hit at least 21 three pointers ala Louisville vs Baylor the Shimmel era to have a chance at beating SC on a bad shooting night. Even on a bad shooting night they tend to get the rebound 95% of the time. Folks focus on their defense but the only way a team can beat SC in march is if they outrebound them which no team has been able to do in a while.

Hyperbole like this is why I think South Carolina is far over hyped this year. A team that is playing offense 4 vs 5 or sometimes even 3 v5 every time down the court is going to be easier to beat than you seem to realize.

I still think they are a top 5 team and will got to the final four but, yea, this isn’t the take.

Biggest thing I think teams do is just what Maryland did is pack the paint. To be honest I think teams would fare better playing them straight up. Why, because although those wide open threes may not fall, the bigs for SC anticipates that shot and position themselves for that rebound. This why I think Dawn gives players like Beal the green light.

Sometimes as coaches you gotta play and trust that your players will get it done, instead of trying to install a junk defense that frankly SC is prepared to see.

:eek:I pretty sure that is not how it works.

South Carolina is already #1 and they beat Maryland. How could you possibly enhance a number 1 ranking?

What I said wasn't enhanced was the quality of the win. I said nothing about the ranking.

They said win not ranking.

 Quality of win factors in the ranking. Why else would you bring it up?

The number one ranked team team cannot be ranked higher than number 1.

There’s a thing called the NCAA tournament at the end of the season. Not sure you’ve hard about it. But the seed you based on the quality of wins and loses. So the quality of wins is regularly evaluated.

It's a good thing we don't do that then.
