South Carolina vs Maryland

Congrats Gamecocks. The Terps were totally outclass by you guys. I think the Terps will be fine in the Big 10 if the injuries don't catch up to them. Sellers is the latest to get hurt. That means they are down FOUR players. But they are no match for South Carolina or Stanford. The Baylor game is going to be HUGE for them.
Don't think Baylor has any post presence outside of Blackwell, unless they get Edwards cleared.

And Blackwell is only 6’ tall. She’s just a great rebounder.

I would be surprised if this game is close, even if Miller is good to go
Good call Hayven. It wasn’t close. SC took Maryland out back behind the woodshed and whooped that a&@. Maryland has a lot of work to do if they want to run with the big girls.

.-.
South Carolina looked REAL good. Scary good. To beat a top 20 team by 25 points, this early in the season. Scary. Maryland ain't the Sister's of the Poor. They are pretty good. I am looking forward to that Stanford/South Carolina game on the 20th.

I’m a big fan of Stanford, but SC still has the advantage. They’re bringing Laeticia Amihere, Kamilla Cardoso, Sania Feagin and Ashlyn Watkins all off the bench. No other team can match that physicality.
Nobody!!!

I think MD will be better, but right NOW they seem to be experiencing some of what ails TN. Trying to get all those new pieces to gel. Meyers was Myers. The rest seemed unsure of their roles in the offense. Some just looked scared. Their guards had some nice and surprising dribble drives, but no one cut to take a pass. Lot of standing around at or near 3-point land. And Miller was out so that made MD easier to defend. Despite the loss, I did think they exposed a chink in SC's armor...push the tempo and don't allow them to set up on defense. Gia Cooke kept pushing it at them, but she needs to finish better. But she's just a freshman. And ZONE is definitely the way to play SC who was 28% from 3. Having said that, Stanford has the pieces to actually play SC man to man and mix up defenses. An advantage in that SC has essentially a freshman starting at PG.

But don’t SCar and Stanford both have questions at PG?

I would bet on Stanford at home next week. Possibly to probably not in the tourney when SCar has had more time to work out it’s PG inexperience issues.

They do...sort of. But I suspect against SC that Haley Jones will do a lot of ball handling. And let me clarify SC has a very good starting PG, but this early in the season against an elite team is a big ask for most PGs with similar experience. You do have Fletcher, but she looked like she is still learning her way around your offense. I'm anticipating a grind and the first team to 60 wins.

It also doesn't help that both of our PG's are, coming from injury and have minutes restrictions. I feel like by the time they get a good feel for the game they have to check out again.

In order for that to work teams will have to start out rebounding us. Those missed 3s might as well be post entry passes given how many of those rebounds let to outbacks and trips to the free throw line.

Spooky for any team to have to play SC. Even if shots not falling they rebound and finish. If they make shots nobody beating them.

True. I would be really impressed if SC beats up on Stanford like they do most teams. Last year, even though SC won, Stanford outrebounded them. Turnovers was the problem for Stanford. Neither team is running away with this game.

SC whipped them good with their C game. The scuffle got their heads on straight in second half,

Maryland held up until the third which I thought was a good sign considering the roster situation. I don't think many expected the game being a 6 point difference at half. The freshman will give fans something to be excited about this season.

My only gripe was the guard Cooke driving to the hoop as many times that she did. Not sure if it's a habit or that she saw something because all I saw was a lot of South Carolina in the paint.

Yeah just like last year, Stanford is the team that worries me the most. They have the size to match, they can be just as physical and they can spread pretty well too.

I think Stanford gets overlooked in this area. With players like Belibi, Iriafen, Pretchel (sic?), they have players who are not afraid of contact. Betts could be a lot more physical than some expect even as a freshman. There's a reason she was a starter for the U19 squad when she was the youngest player on the roster. Combine this with their ability to shoot outside, being physical and outrebounding may not be enough.

Seeing both Beal and Cooke shot 3s last night was nice to see. If this continues, it could add another wrinkle to how South Carolina's offense works. This is the type of chess match I love to see in college basketball.

I don’t worry about the results of next weekend’s game. Both teams can “afford” a loss in this game.

Really looking forward to it though!

Last night in the broadcast, either Eric or Rebecca mentioned that, in re South Carolina, someone has coined a term something like shot-pass. Meaning that to get the ball inside, they might’s well shoot it as pass it

It’s all tongue-in-cheek, of course, but it’s only funny if there’s a grain (in this case, more like a chunk) of truth in it.

MD shot 30% for the game and scored 55 points though.

I'm not sure how big an opening that really was. Though 7 point margin in second half was probably a pretty good outcome down Miller.

But I think they mostly tired themselves out with the pressure..

South Carolina did the turn the ball over a lot but it wasn't really a result of full court pressure. Mostly it was execution and decision making in the half court against zone.

Maryland played really hard and has talent and some athletes. Im sure they will be a factor in the BiG

SC's defense and size will simply overwhelm most teams. The are so long and athletic at every position. Offense was painful at times with the ball just floating around the perimeter looking for an entry pass while all of Maryland was clobbering Boston inside. I'm no basketball expert, but wouldn't it make sense for Beal/Johnson/Fletcher to simply take 1-2 dribbles and get to about 15 feet and either dribble into an open midrange, or draw a defender and create more space for Boston inside? Or kick it out to a shooter so they can catch in rhythm? The redundancy of throwing it around the perimeter rarely seemed to work, though Beale/Cooke were able to knock down looks outside. Johnson didn't play well but I'm excited to watch her play this year. She looks extremely long/athletic. Cardoso played great, Boston was Boston.

Maryland put up a valiant effort through the first half but fell apart in the 3rd. They're just not nearly as talented without Miller out there and are a completely different team than they've been the past few years. Briggs was very underwhelming after a lot of excitement about her coming this year. Meyer was quite good in the first but tailed off in the second half. She didn't get enough helped. I liked the aggressiveness of freshman Cooke. I still think they could be a Big Ten title contender if Miller returns and Briggs steps up.

I really thought South Carolina looked terrible last night? Maryland ran out of steam with some injuries midway through the third quarter but it was a close game up until that point with their best player on the bench.

SC guard play is atrocious and they struggle to get the ball inside outside of missed shots. I don’t know how this is the best team in the country and if it is then it’s a very down year for WCBB. Yikes.

I just can't picture Stanford taking on any contact. They are more of a finesse team.

They sure do win pretty though.

Have you watched them? Despite being thin, Brink has always been an aggressive player and is a lot stronger than she appears. Iriafen is wiry but is also plenty strong and doesn't shy away from contact.
