So. Carolina vs Texas A&M

Williams needs to stop challenging Wilson. She's getting blocked or taking a difficult shot every time.

It's so very like Carolyn Peck to turn it into the "Tiffany Mitchell" show.

63-56 SC , T played sloppily last few minutes.
63-58 SC one and half minutes to go.

Tiffany Mitchell has had something to do with making it the Tiffany Mitchell Show too, though

I think the rest of the team has as much to do with their success. But Peck likes to glom onto one player. And Mitchell makes plenty of mistakes too.

Well I do agree Caroyn's "Tiffany Mitchell Time" and "Turnover Tiffany" are annoying

I don't see how South Carolina stays within 20 of Uconn. Their offense is better than South Carolina's defense and Uconn's defense is also better.

I do and it has to do with the whistles. Don't ever under estimate their ability to screw up a game. ;)

69-63 SC . T missed 3 shots. 15 seconds to go.
foul shot for SC . Game is prractically over.

We'll see if the "Closer" gets a chance to close on Feb 8th. Maybe Staley has a 10 point play she can draw up for her in the last 5 seconds.

So Carolina is able to win these close games due to Tiffany Mitchell and their superior size in the low post. They just need to get the ball down low and their size leads to easy baskets. A&M couldn't make baskets in the low post, nor could they stop So Carolina.

It will be interesting to see how UConn handles the bigs of So Carolina. Stewie and A'ja will be the key. Will both be able to stay out of foul trouble as neither team can afford to have their best player on the bench for significant minutes.

Greetings to you, Zee.

My take is that these two supposedly good teams made more errant (or just plain bonehead) plays than I might have expected. And they think they can whip UConn? Uh, no.

Because all they had to do was get the ball into the low post for easy baskets or get it to Tiffany Mitchell. A&M couldn't stop them.

SC only has 5 players scored. One of them 1 pt, the other 4 share 69 pts

How will So. Carolina handle Stewie?

We pretty much only played 6 tonight.

Aja is an amazingly athletic player for her height. Her decision to go to SC was major; had she gone to UConn, we wouldn't be speculating about the game on Feb. 8. You got a real catch there. She's something.

I do not see how a team capable of being held to 25 points in the first half is ever going to beat UCONN. Maybe if the y played 10 times SC would win one.....maybe.
All bets are off when you take an SEC away from their home court - as KY proved today.

Courtney Williams had an awful 2nd half. She committed 4 turnovers in the 3rd quarter -- lazy passes -- that led directly to 7 SC points. Jones committed the other open court turnover that led to another layup. Nine points on layups (+ free throw) off of turnovers. That won't happen next Monday night.

I understand Williams didn't play in the previous 3 aTm games. It showed. She looked very fatigued in the 2nd half which may have caused her lazy passes.

After watching games over the past couple of weeks it is very clear that defense is a problem. UConn is going to beat SC decisively barring foul trouble. We know UConn doesn't foul but remember those ole ND games. I don't think we have to worry about that. UConns defense is just to to good for SC to over come and UConn score way to many points. If UConn comes out hot this game could be over in the first half.

Even without having watched the game I could tell how it went from the size of this thread: a close game that SC managed to win. Though this one was easier than some. They didn't need to come from behind late in the 4th like they sometimes have to.

I have noticed that they are very good at winning these sorts of down-to-the-wire games, and have a lot of experience doing so. When UConn plays them, it would be preferable if they try to make sure the game is not close in the 4th. ;)

UConn's perimeter offense will keep SC from being able to pack it in on defense. Both Wilson and Coates are liabilities when they are 10' from the basket, as they tend to play defense with their hands; back-door cuts will lead to fouls, which will put them on their heels and cut down their effectiveness offensively. With respect to the SC offense, it's predicated on getting the ball inside for easy baskets, or back out to Mitchell & Sessions for jumpers. With Nurse and Bon-bon harassing their guards, the passes inside won't be as crisp, so Wilson and Coates will have to work from a lesser advantage than they are used to. If they need to dump back, the pass back out won't be an easy one, and will likely lead to turnovers.

USC had only four contributors on offense (a fifth scored 1 point); they need to find a way to spread things around. They hit only 2-11 from beyond the arc, which is the only weak spot we have shown on defense. And for all of that vaunted size, Carolina out-rebounded A&M by a whole 4; only 1 more offensive than A&M had. That won't get the job done.

My biggest concern for UConn is that Butler doesn't appear ready for this game. I was hoping we'd have a big to bang with them, but she doesn't seem to have her sea-legs, yet. More time, more experience; maybe she will be ready come tournament time.

If we don't lose coverage in the weave on defense (which is why we leave players open for 3s), and we move without the ball on offense, it should be a double-digit win for UConn. If the officials let South Carolina bang us around in the post and we have an off night shooting, it could be close.

If USC has an 8-point quarter like they did tonight, it won't be close at all.

A few general observations and feel free to disagree:
1. SC wins by Wilson's play for most of the game augmented by Tiffany Mitchell's play the last few minutes, in crunch time.
2. Even when teams like SC appear to be well-matched vs. UConn on PAPER, that's it - only on paper. Reality is far different -- coaching and chemistry. Two C's plus of course Connecticut. The three C's.

They'll double-team her.
Double team Stewie...with whom? Wilson has the height, but not the feet, so it would have to be Wilson and a guard. That leaves Coates in the paint alone surrounded by shooters, Gabby's hops, Napheesa's nose for the ball/basket, and Tuck's masterful footwork.

I think they play us straight up and see where it takes them, and make adjustments. Imovbioh is the wild card for them; how will she handle the pressure? Of course, there is always Cuevas; maybe this is the game where she figures it out (or Coach Staley figure her out).
