SMU's Emmanuel Mudiay to bypass college and play overseas

Yeah but after looking at the video in this thread college basketball is just a bus stop, and an 'inconvenience' to a certain extent. He is NBA ready and college is not necessary. So to get paid for that one year is understandable especially if his financial status warrants it.

Even if Ollie had him he would still would have an NBA mindset on an immediate level. Not to be negative on him, but doing well in school is secondary. However he's the exception.

One year player no matter what school he were to choose.
I am not sure really why, but putting up a less than stellar year in Europe vrs CBB seems to be more acceptable as well. If youre a top 10, 5-star and not killing it your freshman year, it seems to hurt your draft positioning more than if you played a year pro in Europe and didn't kill it, IMO.

I don't have an answer other than perhaps the competition is better and more mature. Maybe that is taken into account. But he seems that he would be able to succeed wherever he goes (i.e. Europe or College). He looks to be that good. But that's only from the highlight reels, so take that with a grain of salt.

Can't say that today about too many high schoolers.

This stinks, but on the bright side our chances of repeating just improved. BTW SMU still has a good team that beat us twice.

I don't think there's any way he opts for Europe over SMU if the possibility of attending college were still possible. I suspect there's something that was going to prevent him from becoming eligible.

Mudiay is eight months away from being able to access a ridiculous amount of money - the second SMU's season ends, he's free to accept an advance from agent, sponsor, etc.

The financial story is fine, but it looks like cover.

I wouldn't disagree with you, but Ive also never been particularly hardup financially. Either way, Im thinking somebody stuck $50k in his pocket recently.

.-.
Welp, I guess there goes at least on potential/acceptable loss this year, huh?

There's clearly some smoke regarding the kid's eligibility - he never showed up at SMU for summer session, so there was obviously something wrong. Better to get out of Dodge before the sheriff shows up with the manacles.

Hard to feel too sorry for SMU. They got their hands dirty when they offered JM Mudiay a scholarship - he isn't even in the orbit of being a DI player and that schollie is nothing short of a legalized bribe.

Well that's disappointing. I really liked what I saw in the McD game and was hoping to watch him tear up the AAC...except against us. I remember how heartbroken I was when Nadav decided to not return after one year. Not nearly as crushing was when Andrew Bynum entered the draft at the last moment and never played here. This decision it taking place very late and has to be a huge kick in the gut for SMU fans. As some have pointed out, it clearly hurts the AAC. We needed all the good teams we could muster. Oh, well. The kid is a h*ll of a player.
