We have enough raw athleticism on this team, we could use a guy who is exceptionally skilled coming in, it seems like that has been a rarity for UConn as of late.
I agree. Having Gilbert, Adams, Hamidou (god willing) & Larrier around a guy like Vance will be great. He's going to spread the floor.

Vance is definitely not that athletic. He's got really poor ups and dunking ability for a kid his size. BUT, he seems very skilled, especially on that baseline move toward the beginning of this video. He's also just a lights out shooter. He's gonna be a rich man's Niels Giffey by the time he is an upperclassmen at UConn.

That's what I'm hoping he'll become. A deep-threat three or stretch four depending on the lineup that can do all the glue-type things while being lethal from outside. Senior year Giffey was a hell of a player.

People seem to forget how good an athlete Giffey was. Niels could defend most 3s and some 4s. I think Vance will struggle to keep in front of a lot of wings, but hopefully he'll make up for it with lights out shooting.

Ehh, he was a good defender because he was a max effort guy on defense, who had the IQ and strength to make up for some athletic deficiencies. I think you're overstating his athletic ability because Neils struggled to stay in front of some of the more athletic wings too. He does have better quickness than Vance but I'm hoping the size difference will help to make him a passable defender. I don't think he'll be as good as Neils though so I agree with that.

And of course we'll display oodles of patience. It's hard to forget Neils's top skill as a frosh and soph was his pivot.

Wednesday is early signing day. The day a lot of the anxiety over recruiting comes to a close. Nov. 18th is the day we can begin anxiously worrying about Diallo, Zach Brown, Makai A-L, and the rest....

Niels, at times throughout his four years at UConn, covered all five positions on the floor. He was a terrific athlete.

I agree. I don't mean to turn this into a white black thing, but I think because he was white some didn't see him as athletic. He could get well above the rim. He showed some blow-by ability his last two seasons getting into the paint off the dribble and flushing it when he had a clear path to the rim.

Now I'm not saying he was an uber-athletic wing, but he was above average. Vance, from the little I saw of him, didn't look particularly quick and explosive, but that doesn't mean he won't be a productive player, particularly on offense. Larry Bird didn't exactly get far off the ground, though he was big, but he had a great handle, big-time BBIQ, and a quick and accurate shot from all over the floor. He was a good rebounder too. Not comparing Vance to Larry for a moment here, but my point is good basketball players learn to make up for their deficiencies by getting the most out of their strengths. I like a lot what I see in Vance, just a tad concerned about his defense trying to defend quicker 3s if he's at the 3 and stronger 4s if he's at the 4. I think ultimately his position will be a stretch-4 as he matures and gets stronger.

I tend to like the more athletic type at the wing, 2 and 1, but there's always room for smart ballers who can hit diggers especially during winning time, ala Rashad Anderson. I'm just not sure Vance will be a 30+ minute guy, though I see him as a solid contributor and a match-up challenge especially when we need a zone-buster type perimeter player.

I have to disagree with you on that. I'm not saying he wasn't a very solid defender and very versatile but his speed, leaping ability, quickness, and lateral agility were certainly not anywhere close to terrific. Don't get me wrong, one of my favorite all-time Huskies but let's not get carried away.

If Josh Jackson goes to UMD I'm done with college recruiting. Their fans really think they are leading for him, then again they thought they led for Gabriel too, they may be some of the cockiest fans of a program that frankly hasnt done much, behind only Syracuse.

And what was more remarkable he covered all 5 at the same time

@VanceJackson1: National Signing Day
University Of Connecticut
Yeaaaaaah Storrssssss!!!!!!!
Had to log in just to like this. Gilbert and Jackson signing is huge. Now we need Diarra and Durham to make that commitment.

I agree with you on this, even though the majority of the boneyard probably disagrees. It's been a narrative on the boneyard that Niels was a great athlete. Guy shoots lights out and plays solid defense. He was an awesome player at UConn. I just don't put him in the "terrific" athlete category like others here.

Most people just think he was an underrated athlete, that's all. However with that being pretty much the majority opinion, it's almost difficult why we continue to state it repeatedly. I guess we all really like Niels.

Durham is signing tonight.
Juwan Durham won't be able to play basketball until next year, but the 6-foot-9 forward is locking up his college plans tonight at 6 p.m. Durham is scheduled to sign his Letter of Intent to UConn during Tampa Prep's practice and then have it faxed to Kevin Ollie and the Huskies.

"It's a tradition," said Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon about having his players sign during practice. "There's no question it will be a load off (signing his LOI). The kid has been working his tail off for this day."

Yeah definitely a situation where, if you have the majority thinking someone is underrated, they probably aren't actually underrated. He was a good athlete, no doubt, which became more apparent once he got a little more comfortable driving the ball his senior year, however if we're to believe some of the opinions on this board, then he should be in the NBA with his range and size.

The fans of the University of Pittsburgh would like to have a word with you.

The Neils comparison should be exactly why we should all be encouraged about how awesome this Vance signing is. Vance may not have freak athleticism, but he's still an athletic dude, he can dunk easily, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on guarding people. He has awesomely fine-tuned offensive skills, and a great shot. It's not like he's slow, he's just not LeBron's. Neils' athleticism didn't jump off the screen every time, but he was plenty athletic enough to defend any position on the floor, and especially at 6'8" I would imagine Vance will be just fine guarding the people he's asked.

Except I've never seen one of those in my entire life! I've heard about them though, they seem to be mythical, like unicorns.

Well, the truth is that U. Pitt fans were some of the best represented of bball fans at the BET in MSG.

It was Syracuse, UConn, St. John's when they were good, and Pitt in 3rd or 4th place. Georgetown had a smattering of fans, occasionally Seton Hall when they won the first game (rarely), and even ND. Pitt was probably the 3rd strongest fan base in the conference.

You're nuts!! I was in upstate New York last month and I saw a ton of them...or maybe that was Plattsburg.
