Some thoughts on the Seton Hall game;
  • In the words of Dorothy and Geno, “There’s no place like home!”
  • UConn WBB is steeped in history. Today there was more UConn history as Paige became the fastest player to reach 2,000 pts, in just 102 games, 6 games faster than Maya. Paige is the embodiment of perseverance and she has been an absolute joy to watch.
  • In 2019 I was in awe seeing Aubrey light up the scoreboard as well as the stat sheet in her last 4 HS games, all of which were played a short drive from my home. Seeing her on the court again following yet another major injury, playing against her mom & dad’s alma mater was wonderful. I suspect that I wasn't the only UConn fan to get emotional when Aubrey sprinted down the court on the break in the 4th qtr, catching a pass in stride for a fastbreak layup. :)
  • I know there was some concern expressed on the BY about UConn’s 3-pt shooting. In today's game the Huskies were 17/32 (53%). Nuff said…
  • There are times when UConn’s ball movement is mesmerizing for fans as well as opposing defenses. The sequence during the 2nd qtr when every UConn player touched the ball as it was fired around the court, ultimately ending up in Ice’s hands for an easy layup, was a thing of beauty.
  • After a somewhat quiet game vs St John's, Sarah was back to being Sarah with 23 pts (9/11) and 11 rebounds while giving Faith Masonius fits (3/15 with 9 turnovers). In fairness, Sarah did get some help on Masonius as both Morgan & Aubrey took a turn hounding the Pirate’s leading scorer.
  • Today's game was the first that we've really seen UConn's 3-headed monster with Paige, Azzi & Sarah combining for 59 pts. Here we come.....
  • Villanova is up next for the Huskies, also at Gampel. Good luck to the Wildcats in trying to slow down these Huskies at home….

Not a lot of analysis here. The Huskies shot lights out and were relentless defensively. Seton Hall was way out of their element early.

I didn’t think Sarah played badly against St. John’s. Today, though, she reminded us again what an All-American looks like. I was surprised and I should not have been that she got the assignment to guard Masonius.

He would never do it but Geno could sub hockey style. How many Big East games could Arnold, Shade, Cheli, Brady and Aubrey win as a starting five?

I thought Allie and Q took advantage of their playing time.

I thought it would be closer, within 30 pts. I was wrong. Paige Azzi and Sarah dominated almost every moment they were on the court. Really Awesome. Paige hit the 2,000 pt hallmark. Now that’s in the rear view mirror. Time to get ready for Tennessee and SC in the next few weeks.

And Aubrey is back. She looked strong and athletic, not at all tentative — 3 pts, 4 rebounds 2 assists and generally good defense as usual.

And Allie can get really hot! 3-6 from 3 for 9 pts. I have a feeling that kid has a future in Storrs. Also, she looked pretty quick on a few plays defending Jada Eads, who has hidalgo-level speed.

And one more remark about Azzi. She had 18 pts including 4-8 from 3. If she keeps this up, there’s really no way for opponents to key on Paige and Sarah.

Last but not least, the core scorers — Paige Azzi Sarah Ash Allie — shot 28-41 altogether or 68.3%, and 16-25 from 3 or 64%.

I don’t have many gripes, except for one: Perimeter defense. We gave up so many open looks (26) and we absolutely cannot do that against Tennessee or SC. Tenn especially can get really hot from 3.

Other than that, Aubrey looked great. Another key rebounder. Morgan did well in her minutes and Ziebell with some good off ball movement to get those looks.

Sarah was insane, Paige hit 2k, and Azzi had 4 three pointers and some pure middies. Great job overall.

That was about as good as it gets. Our big three darn near got 20 apiece, Ash and Allie has 3 threes each, Griff played (!!) and looked pretty good, Jana had her moments and everyone scored. Plus we wore my favorite uniform, which should stop being a retro choice and start being the everyday go to uniform. Quite the game. Happy, happy,

Really?? Seton Hall was 4/26 from the arc.
If the other team is hitting 15% of their 3's, why would you worry about guarding them out there?

Today, UConn looked like they were enjoying home cooking. Out of the blocks, the tentative Sarah Strong from the St John's game was taking no prisoners. Besides being a fabulously gifted player, she's an incredibly smart one - a true natural.

I'd like to say that Paige, Azzi and Sarah read my post about 3-pt shooting (I'm chuckling) and today's performance was their response, but this is what UConn is capable of in every outing. When all three are on, it's a case of pick your poison.

It's obvious the team is developing chemistry. Earlier in the season, when Paige took a breather, the offensive sets became stale and clunky. A little more than half way through the season, Geno's various substitutions and player combinations are showing results.

Lastly, how great was it to see Aubrey take her familiar gallop down the court for a fast-break layup. so happy for her.

Like I said, Advanced practice. Defense would be the key. Every one ate and it was GREAT to see Aubrey back on the floor and her usual rebounds.Sarah had a double-double, Paige and Azzi tied in double figure scoring. Ashlynn had 3 more steals and 8 points. A crisp. clean game with few fouls. Allie again showed what is in our future from her and Morgan played like she can, Uconn is slowly reaching it's peak and will be ready when March gets here. Totally enjoyable game from every one and again, it was great to see Aubrey on the floor. Now, I pray Caroline gets back also. GO FRESHMEN!!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!

They were wide open is the problem, and it wasn’t on purpose.

The defense got lost behind a screen or just completely on the wrong girl. It was unintentional.

Like I said, not many negatives except for the one thing that’s been a problem all season. But with Aub back, our defense is much better with additional athleticism.
