Long day. I'll try to give some details about the whole experience. Sorry for the long post.
Up at 4 am. At the course by 5:15. The buzz from the early morning crowd was super cool. Great scene of the sun coming up over the stands behind the first tee. We settled in on the first fairway maybe 100 yds from the tee. The entire crowd sang the National Anthem which gave you chills. The team walkouts from the tunnel was cool and the cheers/boos/chants were awesome every time.
It was overwhelming after the groups were done with the 1st hole because you have a full crowd for a "major" but only 4 groups so scrambling to try and get to the next viewing spot was crazy. Trying to get to an area you could see 2/3 holes easily. And, being 5'8" definitely wasn't to my advantage a good chunk of the day. I was able to get super close to Scottie, Rory, Keegan, Xander, Rahm at a few points and had a great view (like 15 ft away) from Scottie sinking a birdie on 2.
The fans made it like nothing I've experienced. Every shot brought out one side cheering like crazy, more than you'd imagine or see on TV. You are high fiving strangers all day and we had a great time talking to the Euro fans who travelled from all over the world, can drink us under the table and were very respectful. I would almost say they love the Cup more than we do (?).
After like 16,000 steps in the morning matches, we got food (it was "free" with your ticket and everything was really really good), then headed to camp out in the stands behind the first tee for the afternoon session. Got lucky and set up in the 2nd row. We had to go through a vigorous TSA search with secret service there so we knew the President was coming. Like 15 minutes before the 1st group teed off in the pm, Air Force One flew in right down the 18th fairway over the stands, super low making a definite entrance.
I've never been near a US President before and when he came out, I don't know how to describe the energy. He was definitely very popular with the crowd and the USA chants and hype was really, really insane. Seeing someone that famous and the attention he commanded was very cool to experience, like when they say Jordan or Tiger enters a room. The crowd then sang the National Anthem really loudly and a fighter jet flyover buzzed the course. That whole scene and experience was a very unique and overhwhelming scene, not politically, but it just raised the US vs Europe tone of the match to something I have never been part of. The energy of that place was what the Ryder Cup experience was all about.
Camped out at a couple different spots in the pm now having more awareness of the course and view spots. Watched the last group go through 14 and decided to hit the pro shop and beat the crowd knowing we'd never get over to 16-17-18 in time and most matches don't go that long anyway. Spent almost a grand in the pro shop and met Jamie Foxx who was definitely high but friendly.
All in all? Bucket list experience. I'm not sure going again would or could be the same now knowing what it's like? But if you're a golf fan, it's an absolute must to try and get to. I had a smile the entire day, lost my voice, was up for 22 straight hours by the time I got home and I can't stop thinking about certain parts of the day.
