OT: Ryder Cup

There are some crazy takes in this thread. If you don't think the US has a chance tomorrow you haven't watched much Ryder Cup action. We generally dominate the singles matches. If the first 3-4 matches start going the way of the US, then Europe is going to get very tight very quick. I also think the broadcasters bungled the Spieth tee shot on the 16th hole. Zach was telling him he'd be better to lay up to 50 yards and give himself enough yardage to put some loft/spin on the ball from the fairway. Spieth is one of the best wedge players in the game so this was actually good strategy to lay up. Unfortunately Spieth pushed his 3 wood into the water. He was not trying to hit the green, he was aiming at the left bunker he just mishit his shot. Spieth has been pretty brutal for this entire Ryder Cup.

Just curious but what do you mean by dominate singles? The last 5 times it’s been played in Europe the US have lost 4 of 5 single sessions.

2021 8-4 US
2018 7.5-4.5 Europe
2016 7.5-4.5 US
2014 6.5-5.5 Europe
2012 8,5-3.5 Europe
2010 7-5 US
2008 7.5-4.5 US
2006 8.5-3.5 Europe
2004 7.5-4.5 Europe
2002 7.5-4.5 Europe

Anyone who's actually "watched much Ryder Cup action" realizes US needs 8.5 pts. Which they haven't done this century.

This is a bad take based on the past 25 years of Ryder Cup competition.

I'm calling 7-5 Euros today, but could be more. Even if the US wins 3 of the first 4 matches, the back half of the US roster is mostly not playing well and can be taken by the back half of the Euro roster.

Wake up to a lot of blue. Is that good?:D No shot not even a chance to make it exciting at all.

I just read that, BS. That’s why we suck he’s more worried about getting paid than playing for his damn country and beating the Euros. Hey he was fantastic this afternoon, but if true that’s a huge issue. He doesn’t have enough money already?

Would really like to know more about Rory/Lowry/Cava/Bones argument that spilled from 18 to the parking lot? Seems they just reacted to a bunch of heckling from the fans about Cantlay not wearing a hat. It’s okay for them to dance, laugh and fist pump but how dare the USA have a celebration?
It was pointed out that the players do get some compensation for this. A portion of the revenues of the event goes to the PGA players retirement funds. Their contracts with equipment suppliers and other sponsors typically have bonuses if you make the team. If the pga tour further pays for making the team, it brings up issue on eliminating the captain's picks. There is already resentment that they are too clubby now. i.e., you make the team because you are Scottie's buddy. Think they would have to go strictly on the merit or point system. On the Rory thing.. He was pissed about LaCava continuing to jaw at him while he was lining up his putt. He wasn't pissed at Bones. LaCava was out of camera shot in the parking lot.

There’s a chance…an outside chance, but it does exist.

Homa's lie had to be ridiculously impossible to take an unplayable in that situation. I can't imagine Tiger or Mickelson doing that.

And yet the gamble paid off. Kinda thought Fitz would've fittingly closed it out there, but guess the moment too big for him.

Looks like Europe will probably hang on here, but just by the skin of their teeth.
By my definition, "skin of their teeth" would've been barely getting to 14.5 in the last match.

This wasn't that.

Glad Fleetwood was the one to close it out, but no idea what Fowler was thinking from start to finish of that hole.

Couple thoughts:

Spieth was dreadful why he played as many matches as he did is unexplainable for Zach.

Wyndham may want to keep quiet about who he’s as good or better than if he ever is lucky enough to make the team again.

I like Rory but his whining about Joe Lacava can stop now. Very much a baby since the 18th yesterday.

I know Tommy can putt Ricky but when it means that much you have to make him make that.

They handed it to the Americans, nuff said!

Very surprised at Rory’s behavior after that. He’s usually the most composed guy on the course. Maybe the pressure of the Cup and all that LIV stuff finally hit him. We all can only take so much.

I think the PGA's capitulation to the LIV is still weighing heavily on him and pissing him off. Euro team had no LIV guys, not even co-captains. And LaCava was in Rory's space, which was definitely out of line. That said, the animosity shouldn't have extended off the course.

Decent effort by the Americans today

But, I put a fair amount of the blame on Zach. Donald seemed more relaxed, open to the press and maybe it carried over to his guys.

For all the talk from Zach about this being the most unified team ever, seems like that may have been whistling past the graveyard.

Cantlay and Xander skipping the scouting trip on their own accord. It was also reported they were hanging out in separate part of the team room and the ‘why aren’t we getting paid’ angle…

Cantley said all that reporting was made up. A complete lie, he never spoke about division or getting paid.

A complete lie or the truth? We don’t know but once again the US guys just don’t act the same. They don’t walk off tees in four balls and alternate shot shoulder to shoulder all that much. They enjoy each other a whole lot more it’s easy to see, win or lose!

if this is sourced from yesterday's press conference, he never replied directly to the question of getting paid being brough up. It was a yes or no question. which he sidestepped. its ok to be brought up. it has in the past as long as it doesn't dominate or contaminate the locker-room.

I would've believed Cantlay more if the entire team went hatless today.

They didn't.

fwiw, Spieth basically said the five week layoff was a major issue. The Euros still had tourneys to play, like the BMW Championship three weeks ago.

Zach was a horrible Captain, from his picks to preparing his team for the course, to the team culture that was completely lacking.

As for Rory, I think it's laughable that he gets so serious for this Ryder Cup, that many greats including Tiger ignore from a career perspective. The man has ZERO Majors the past decade in his prime 25 to 35 years. Many of them in collapse style. Sorry, but that defines him more as a player than this event.

He has to say something…then why didn’t they play the Napa tournament 2 weeks ago?
