Reibe in the portal

Reibe is the perfect encapsulation of the portal era.

He’s good enough to be a starter on most teams. For a team like UConn with championship aspirations, he isn’t (yet). It’s better for him to get a 30min starting gig at a place like BC and it’s better for us if we can land a player who can defend the rim and provide rim running or low post scoring at a high level now.

Well he plays too soft down low. Not all that sorry to see him go other than us having to get two legit centers now.
I agree there. It’s gonna be tough to get two guys who can play, i’d imagine one will be a Sophomore project with upside.

But as someone else noted, this frees up some money to go do just that.

A lot of us talked about getting stronger, I honestly don't know how much of that you can build as a 5. You're kind of born with it. Everything he did felt soft & finesse.

The recruiting classes lately have not been what they once were. Until we hear about what is going on with Furphy and Mullins, we are now 0-4 in two consecutive classes on HS recruiting keepers for more than one year. The continuity thing might be all for naught, or Hurley goes to more of the sophomore transfer model.

We are definitely moving to a 2 year model - don't expect anyone to be. here for longer than that going forward.
A bit disingenuous to be chalking up Castle, McNeeley, and Mullins alongside guys like Reibe or Abraham.

Reibe was not an asset down the stretch. Really helped in the beginning of the year, but was taken advantage of by the top teams. I see him as a great player in 2 years, but the minutes he got this year were on point. He is not the typical Uconn '5'. As someone said above, more of a Dirk type player - which would be great eventually. It was obvious Hurley would recruit a transfer over him.
I think the play is to promise him some minutes as a stretch 4 and more as the 5. Looking at 10-15 as the backup 5 and 5-10 as a stretch 4. 15-25 minutes per game would be possible. If that's not acceptable, best of luck. Would like him to stay, but need to face reality.

.-.
If him and his camp can’t see what Hurley builds, especially after this magical ride then what can u tell him. Sucks he can’t stick around.

Nowell, McNeeley, Abraham, Reibe.

We await Mullins and Furphy. Once the Fab 5 runs their course, Hurley is going to have nothing to carryover. It's going to be the incoming freshmen and whatever transfers he bring in this year. The whole look and feel we've had with these longer terms kids is officially gone.

.-.
He'll be good somewhere else offensively but he's more power forward than center. 6'10.5, 7'1 wingspan, plays soft around the rim and is fairly unathletic.

I do wish we had at least 1 center coming back who already knows the system like we had all these other years.
And yet we need a power forward.

McNeeley is not even close to the same category as Nowell, Abraham or Reibe.

The two championship teams flourished from a combination of rim protection, size on the perimeter, athleticism on the perimeter, and ability to get in the passing lanes. If UConn returns Demary, Ball, and Mullins, it underscores the need to get an athletic, physical big that can protect the rim. Unfortunately, that’s not a strength for Reibe. UConn allowed a TON of guard penetration this year and last year. The roster desperately needs shot blocking, rebounding, and physicality down low.

We can't do a whole summer of this.

There was enough smoke here through the year that it isn’t particularly surprising. I think he can be really good but he was nearly unplayable on defense for the latter part of the year. Got completely lost on screens, got turned around getting back to his man in help defense, and was just pushed around a ton down low. Curious to see where he lands if PT was his biggest concern. His offense is ready IMO but he needs to put in a ton of work on strength and defense to be a good high major starter. Best of luck to him.

I found him to be a miss of a recruit from the start. Lot's of chatter early around him having a nice jump shot - not sure that is ever priority for any 5, nevermind a Uconn 5. Maybe he wants to go somewhere he can play more of a stretch role.

He had some really nice games early, then tapered off drastically towards the end of the year. Some of the fouling he was doing was borderline lazy, like he didn't care. The kid was averaging a foul a minute at times.

Best of luck - let's hope we land someone really good, it's a vital position. If we now have to go into next year a new big and PG, that is a tough place to start.
Good point about end of season and tournament, it did seem he played with less energy and effort maybe the intensity of UConn program was too much for him over the long haul , hope he finds his place because he helped us win some critical games early on….that said maybe that gives us enough $$ to get Boop the big from AZ State with a little help from big Bro Bobby 😂 That guy is a monster and could be better than Flory IMO

Outside of Sanogo, AK, and Jackson our best players during this historical run have all been 1 and 2 year players- Clingan, Castle, Cam, Tristen, Tarris, Hawkins, Silas, McNeeley, Braylon.

You're of course right on brand with this.

He was disappointing in the post season but he had already lost all confidence by then. It’s a very long season when you aren’t getting a lot of minutes. I think he will be very good eventually. I also think we will be more than fine.

I said it before but i was not as high on Reibe as many here. certainly not as a starter next year. No one likes losing one of their own but I think we’ll sign a better option at the 5

If this was two years ago, no way this kid would leave - maybe even a year ago - wack

We were always going to sign a better option at the 5, now we need 2

for those that saw him in mcdonald’s game it was obvious he thought he was more dirk than clingan . he will average like 8 and 5 with 20 or so minutes … xfer one more times then make a decent living playing in europe… but wonder how nba europe which is coming will effect players like him … interesting observation … he was in nba mocks in early / mid december in the 35-40 range . should have trusted the process

With Reibe off to greener pastures, I like the idea of recruiting both McKeever as a defensive monster and Hines as the next Tarris-style goliath
That would be awesome but might blow like 70% of our budget

Now there’s really no pressure if there ever even was any on Hurley to go out and chase some top bigs in the portal.
Good luck to Reibe.
