Recruits at the Game

I looked around and have not seen teams losing their mystique as they win. Saint Louis Cardinals may not dominate, but they never lost their rabid fan base who flock to the games. When the Yankees dominated for years did their gate suffer? Celtics? Lakers? Duke? Kentucky? San Antonio? Alabama? Connecticut is just not a big sports state. If the were, they would be in the Big 5. If politics were a sport, hey, we are talking rabid!!!

You have never ever ever seen a team like Uconn WBB---for maybe 25 years Uconn WOMEN's had semi rabid fans--some may think they are rabid--but havent been tested for it yet--|Fans of the Uconn Men's base some changed to the WBB as the women won and won and won and won and won---most, even in down years, had 30 win's---tell me what team's that you mentioned had 30 wins for most of the 30 years? At one time Geno sold out the Gampel and XL every game--then winning became the norm.
That is the Mystique that is unique with Uconn--no one ---NO ONE--has won that much. When winning becomes the norm and the expectations become nothing less than a National Championship--what do your call that?? Except Uconn WBB!
Fans became jaded, but had no jade to go with it. When lessor teams, Depaul/Duke/Louisvlle were expected to lose EVERY Game--the fun of a win or a loss was blunted by WINNING.
Don't believe me---call Geno and ask him--why don't you fill up every seat in most of your home games?? If he remember his speeches on the subject--he'll say JADED.
The new found winning WBB Teams have fans not accustomed to winning, each game is a potential loss, not so at Uconn
If you don't believe that--just think of the energized UConn Fan base with the very close to a loss to ND--the blood ran hot again..

Describing Columbia’s temperature in January/February as simply “milder” than Storrs doesn’t do it justice. Mother Nature laughs at that. It’s almost a 30 degree average temperature difference.

New England is downright tundra-like in January/February. I’m actually amazed how cold it gets here, how the cold lingers for WEEKS and the fact that people endure this every year. It’s borderline extreme to me. Below freezing temperatures for weeks on end.. and you complicate it further by adding snow into the mix. Lord help me.

Last year was my first full Connecticut winter and I was miserable and actually depressed for at least 3-4 months. In SC, we have “cold snaps”.. and they are called “snaps” for a reason. The temperature will drop below 40, it’ll rarely even dip into the 20’s for a few days.. but then it “snaps” right back into place and averages in the 50s. We usually get three or four cold snaps in January/February. That’s winter in SC, or the absence of it, basically a New England autumn without the lovely foliage. If I ever move back south I’m looking forward to laughing at my friends and family when it’s 40 degrees and they’re wearing winter coats.

On the other hand, New England has some of the most amazing summers I’ve ever experienced. It’s not hot (by my standards), it doesn’t rain, there are no bugs (again, by my standards) and the humidity is barely noticeable. If you really hate someone, send them to the Deep South between the months of June and September... if they’re lucky, the humidity will break by early September.

If weather were a major factor San Diego State would be getting the best recruits. It's 72 degrees today, about the same temperature it will be in March, June and September.
Do folks in South Carolina really refer to the state university as USC? That's immensely confusing those of us on the left coast.

Some day's it zooms to near 35 and bathing suits are brought out. These a Uconn's kind of kid--not seeking that Texas oven temperature or claustrophobic ND closed in by states on all sides--no room , like the Atlantic provided (Ok, the Sound).

Yes the Gamecocks do refer to their school as USC--what confusing? One would think another unknown school had tried enhance their image by using U.S. C.. I ask--did that crack out there open enough to create the Calif Channel yet?

I hate to sound morbid but unless the fan base becomes younger, a good percentage of UConn's supporters will be either too old to attend games or simply no longer living in the next 10-15 years..........they have to develop more student support and attract younger fans in general if UConn WBB is going to maintain it's rightful place

Maybe UConn can come up with a creative means of maintaining their aging fan base. How about, for a fee, UConn will inter you in a seated sarcophagus at the XL Center or Gampel.

No, not the same. Not really even close. There is a 10F difference in Jan/Feb for the Avg. high. But that's a big difference. 23/28F Avg means no snows gonna melt. 35/39 means snows gonna melt. When it snow out there snows stays for the winter. Around here, it snows, snow melts away, it snows some more, etc. Huge difference not seeing the grass from Dec to Mar/Apr.

You forgot to add in the windchill. 5F. It's a lot windier out in the Great Plains than the Eastern Forests. All winter long.

Having grown up in IL (MN colder), the winters are much milder out here. The only thing really worse is you get bigger storms up here. Bigger snowfalls, but it doesn't stick around all winter. There are days (in a row) around here it doesn't break 32 for a high. There were days (in a row) in IL where it didn't break 0 for a high.

And then there is the wind. I've yet to see fences put up along the roads around here to keep the winds from drifting the roads closed (again after they'd already been plowed open days before).

In Quebec Prov--deep road side ditches are dug to accommodate the snow and run off. Some roads in winter feel like tunnels the blowers throw the snow up near telephone pole heights.
Calumet Mich in UP has marks on telephone poles at 22 feet indicating the depth of snow the previous year. Pure copper country, Calumet.

I never lived that fur north in the winter, in the USA, Canada yes---lived through a few winters in OKLA, it wasn't that cold but the wind did make life interesting--I drove from OKC to Amarillo (yellow) Texas-- no kidding, truth, driving my (omni present) Okla pickup I had to "crab" i.e. turn my front wheels left to stay straight on the road---the front cross wind was go great my GPM dropped to near nothing. The ice on the roads in Okla or Ark were worse than any snow I have ever been in.

Not to worry even you will get to fit in the aged out fan base. With a certain streak of luck --some in their 50's or 60' may live to become UCWBB fans. Many companies would love to have this kind of customer replenishment.
Part 2.---While some of us may not care the fate of the UCWBB team in 10 years---it may not matter to those hanging around either.

Ah, my days of young and stupid. I probably descended to MD, too. Then there was Annie Green Springs, Boone’s Farm, and (God save me) “Key Largo.” It was around $2.50 a GALLON. It was so bad that my (now) wife refused to drink it. To understand Key Largo, think on the worst sangria you ever had, then cut it 50/50 with water from your garden hose.

Adjusted for inflation---it should sell for about 18 dollars. What a deal. My first house in 1964 sold for 14000, about, couldn't touch the exact same OLD house for less than 275000, do the math.

It's probably a lot windier on the high plains though, so the wind chill is probably a lot worse in Minneapolis. There are also the crazy temperature swings out there. One day it might be 20 the next 60, whereas around here once it's cold that's the way it stays well into the spring.

OK, so we’re talking about an average difference of 7 degrees. So if the temperature is 6 degrees colder in MN for 10 days in a row and on the 11th day it’s 17 degrees colder, that’s a noticeable difference.

I imagine games played in the south don't have to worry about snowstorms, like our 2015 game at Gampel against South Carolina played in the middle of a blizzard. I like our chances with Bueckers she'll feel right at home in Connecticut being from Minnesota.

I never said weather was a major factor for anybody. I was making a general post in relation to another about Columbia's Jan/February as being "milder" than Connecticut's. An understatement in my opinion. I didn't even mention recruiting in my post.

As far as the USC thing. It's really not that big of a deal to most SC fans, especially this one. Most of the people that get bent out of shape about it are people that don't have a dog in the fight at all. It's all relative. People tend to get really petty about it so I just avoid the acronym altogether usually. If I'm in South Carolina I'll say "USC" and I don't really see a problem with it because it's understood what school you're talking about.. but I'm also aware that outside of the state of SC most people think of Southern Cal when you say "USC".. so If I'm not in SC and I'm asked about college I say "South Carolina" and it doesn't bother me at all.

Daylight hours are short in supply as is so I definitely don't spend my time arguing with people over something arbitrary like that. But that's just me. You'll find some SC fans that will argue it until they're blue in the face... it's not that serious to me.

The recruiting comment was general in nature. I think I recall some posters speculating that ONO might not choose to attend UConn because of the weather. Besides, if you live in San Diego and want to maintain residency, the Chamber of Commerce requires that you boast about the weather on a yearly basis.

I rarely look for arguments, SCG. The query was an honest attempt at learning if South Carolina is referred to as USC in and around the state. Thanks for your response.

As a kid growing up in New York, I remember when my brother, who is five years older, told me that one of his friends was going to college at UConn. I thought to myself, "Yukon?" and wondered why anyone would want to go to school in Alaska.
