OT: Realignment?

I'm still amazed at the perception (throughout the media and those who should/do know better than me) that the Big XII is the better more stable conference... and more amazed that that perception is because the conference potentially being raided has the desirable teams that the middle class ones in that conference want to run away from (which in turn will make that conference inherently less stable as you get minnows in with the bigger brands).

It would seem like the smartest play would be to unite the strongest brands under whatever conference shell allows the most deadweight to be dropped... that's the Pac-12. Yet the Big XII is rapidly discussing another GOR (but wisely a shorter contract, they'll hit the market again before the AAC & ACC) to try to continue to buy the impression of more stability. A Pac-whatever with the same GOR & 7-year term reportedly being discussed would have the ability to span the same time-slots, bigger markets and brands.

It'll be interesting to see how it works out, but I'd think:

Washington + Oregon + Cal + Stanford + Utah + Colorado + ASU + Arizona (and Wash. St; Ore. St) adding Texas Tech, OSU, Houston & Kansas --- carries more markets/brands and TV interest splitting dollars 14 ways

As opposed to

Texas Tech, OSU, Houston, TCU, Kansas, BYU (and Kansas St, Iowa St, Baylor, WVU, Cincy, UCF) adding Utah, Colorado, ASU & Arizona --- and splitting it 16 ways

Don’t get me wrong, great sport and fun to watch but it’s not in my top 25 list for fun. I am sure some other folks feel otherwise, but I would be surprised if It’s a large following. If there was we would see volleyball on TV In prime time.

I also check it out during the Olympics and I actually once stumbled upon an event in Central Park where I got to see Holly McPeak play. California, of course, but I find it odd that B1G states do well in Beach Volleyball. The Great Lakes, I suppose.

My guess is no. I believe there will be no pods or divisions. 10 conference games with 2 non-cons. No western pods. Cal may get a guaranteed game per year with UCLA or they may take on Cal as a non football member (with a smaller piece of the pie, of course), giving the Cali 3 less travel for their Olympic sports.

With 20 conference teams (2 more would be brought in) and 3 guaranteed in conference games, you could rotate through the rest. Since there would be 14 teams that are not guaranteed rivalries, you could rotate those every 2 years (home and away games) and you would see every team in a 4 year span.

I don't think UCLA and USC thought this through. The PAC 12 has AZ, AZ State, Berkeley, Oregon, Stanford, Utah, Washington, and UCLA & USC. The B1G doesn't even sponsor women's beach volleyball and Nebraska is Independent. I suppose the move that sport to the WCC or Big West.

I assuming this is sarcastic because they wouldn’t turn down that kind of money because of beach volleyball. Many Big10 schools sponsor sports that aren’t conference sports.

Part of me is beginning to think the B1G just doesn't like Phil Knight and all the influence Nike has had over college athletics over the past 30-40 years.

A Stanford and Cal double whammy makes some sense in that it gets any tendency of California governor to meddle out of the way and gives teams traveling west a doudlbe dip. Play Stanford on Thursday and Cal on Sat or Sun (or vice versa). Saves on travel. You do the same with USC/UCLA.

Unfortunate reality is Oregon is one of those nouveau riche and Oregon isn't much of a market for the eastern half of the country. If you have USC/UCLA/Cal/Stanford you have all the west coast TV's you need. A double dip in the San Fran and San Jose markets crushes Portland and Seattle.

My middle school students, as of this past spring, are all about Crocks, but they have to be bright white and white mid calf length socks. When they wore athletic brands, it was Addias (soccer) and Nike for everything else.
