Agree. I don't see how the ACC has leverage. An exiled Notre Dame would likely just park Olympic sports in the Big East and continue playing football as an independent.
It would also be a unilateral breach of several contracts by the ACC, opening itself up to an easily winnable lawsuit . ND is a full legal member of the ACC, has contracts with the ACC through 2036 and is in full compliance with all such contractual obligations.

If anything at all happens with the ACC in conference realignment, it will be the addition of a team/teams.

While there are no teams that "move the needle" in the traditional market sense, there are teams that would improve the line up of games to watch.

UCF-FSU and UCF-Miami could become nice rivalry games...WVU-Pitt, WVU-VT were always bitter rivalry matches (couch burners). I don't see Cincinnati.

Let's pretend for a minute that the ACC really gave Notre Dame such an ultimatum and followed through. Outside of any potential legal consequences for breach of contract... Notre Dame is one of the schools whose football schedule agreement with the conference as well as its Basketball and T3 sports adds value to both the ACC Network and overall TV rights deal. Losing such a member would likely allow ESPN to reopen/renegotiate the contract and I'd expect that at that point their rights deal would have the value slashed. At that point you'd really see some serious instability with teams, even old guard members like UVA and UNC, even more obviously exploring other options.

If you really want to kill the conference you make that play; or you say it with the whole world knowing you have no intention (or ability) to follow through on the threat.

I don't see UCF at all. Why a third ACC team in Florida? Makes very little sense. It's not like UCF is the third team in Florida either. They are easily 4th. Cincinnati is more attractive than WVU as well. Cincinnati has rivalry games / trophies with Louisville and Pitt.

Do not need Cincinnati to be a rival of Pitt or WVU....WVU will have Pitt and VT.

UCF pulled 3.7 million vs Georgia Tech, 2.5 million vs Louisville, 2.2 million vs Pitt

All bowls, including the minor ones...still averaged over 5 million....2019

2017 UCF-USF was 4.7 million...and not in a bowl game.

UCF has a good following in Florida. Its location in the Orlando area attracts a lot of students that want more action than what Gainesville and Tallahassee offer. The football team certainly pulls some pretty good numbers, but I don't think those numbers will translate unless they have a great team. The stands start hemorrhaging fans after they lose one game. It isn't a religion like like at UF and FSU and I wouldn't think they are worth adding to any conference as of today. There is something that will always be a subpar about a directional school.

Yep...like Southern Cal.

But, maybe there is something sub par about a directional state....

The Dakota's, West Virginia, the Carolina's...hey, does that carry over into conferences? Like Southeastern ?

Used to be, it was thought that team's with "State" in their ttile were sub par....like FSU...LSU...Penn State...Ohio State

Lol. You know darn well USC and UCF are world's apart in every possible way. California has room for 2-3 big names in football with USC being the leader. Florida is much smaller and with UF, FSU and Miami, I don't see UCF or USF ever truly captivating the state. UCF is more like ECU or maybe Houston. Don't let a temporary run of winning seasons fool you.

Not a UCF fan...but much more so than a Cincinnati fan...one of those "city named colleges" like Charlotte, Akron, Buffalo, Houston, Memphis....and Miami.

Ultimately, the number crunchers will decide which team will, in the future, provide match ups that people will tune in. Being a directional school will, by itself, not vitiate a school's worth.

There are a lot of really good city names colleges in this world. UCLA, UCSD, SUNY Buffalo, Boston U, New York U, U Chicago, many of them also in the AAU...

Of those, only UCLA would I consider as an expansion candidate and a TV draw. As far as AAU and football match ups...meh.

I said that tongue in cheek...as a response to someone who said directional schools are sub par...and I mentioned Sourthern Cal in your same vein.

And I did not mention Clemson and Auburn....who are in cities of that name....

There is a handful of bigtime directional schools. UCF isn't one of them.

I think Cincinnati is better than UCF. The ACC has no foothold in Ohio, which is a great football state. Why triple down on Florida and further diminish Miami and maybe even FSU? You can add an equally good football program with a better history, better basketball and get your foot in the door for Ohio recruits while adding no competition for your two existing Florida schools.

All of this presupposes that FSU moves to the SEC.

So, you'd only have southernmost Miami in the ACC, in that case.

If UCF ever joined the ACC, it would become a pretty big deal.

No, the discussion above did not presuppose that. Billybud likes UCF even with FSU in the league. I can’t imagine UCF joining being good for FSU. If FSU left the ACC, UCF would be the logical choice. It would also be too little, too late.

Frankly, USF fans have to be frustrated as hell. The only difference between the two is that UCF’s name coaches worked out and USF’s failed miserably. Good coaches are the secret no matter where the school is located.
