QB Cole Welliver enters Transfer Portal

Next! He will either end up at Rice or an Arizona school. I wish him well, but we can play fb up here in the NE. If it's UNC then all bets off.

ps: Although I'm a little scared of the ghost of Tim Boyle.

Oh, wow does board really has a UConn faithful following, or ya'll buying Paige Wings jerseys?

I still think not getting into the Big 12 hurt keeping him as you remember he thought along with Coach Mora that the Big 12 was a sure thing. My guess he will end up at a Texas Tech, or a Texas St type school. I wish him well

This sucks because I thought he could be good enough to start here in a few years. But the reality is those last 6 words are not reasonable in 2025, and that works both ways. Cole isn't gonna wait around, and on the flip side there are always going to be capable QBs to contribute immediately in the portal

honoring your commitment
I doubt he ever pledged to stay five years at an independent UConn.

For non-QBs, I would like to think they are expecting two seasons before a reassessment, but only one person to can play QB so that position has a greater sense of urgency to find a place that will provide an opportunity to showcase themselves.

Disappointed but not too surprised and honestly not too upset either. I was hoping he'd hang around, get experience and wait his turn which probably would've came next year.

I just think in today's portal/NIL era, it doesn't make sense for programs like ours to get these highly rated recruits (relative to our status) and expect them to sit, develop and wait their turn. Back in the day we were able to do that. That time is over.

Given what our school is (Nationally recognized brand but an independent with a middling reputation in football) we really should be putting our attention to the transfer portal to get players from P4 schools who were highly rated but for some reason are not getting playing time or players who are studs at low end G5 and FCS schools who want to play for a more recognizable brand that might be able to offer more $$ than the school they're coming from. Thankfully, it looks like that is exactly what we're doing.

Not a spitting match but it is a big deal. Faganano being back means absolutely nothing about depth at the position. If he gets taken out that leaves a serious void.
Randy at Maryland in his last season went five deep at QB due to injuries. The last one being a linebacker that played some QB in high school.
We lose serious depth here. I wish him well.

QB depth through development does not exist anymore. The QB room will be revamped annually through transfers.

Not easy to wait your turn these days.
The portal makes it easy to not wait your turn. Add in NIL, how do you show your value sitting on the bench. Right now you only have 5 years to make money, you can’t burn 2 of them not playing and only get entry level NIL for 3 years, hoping for bank in years 4 and 5.

My source is the media. He was taking 3rd string reps and couldn’t beat out Evers then transferred. Not that hard to figure out.

It took the best QB play in a decade to " beat out " an uninspiring and unaccomplished Evers, and even then Mora tried everything to force him on the field

Given that, do you think Welliver standed any chance of removing him from QB 2? He was given the scout team from the git go this spring and never got the chance to work with the twos.

Agreed but that doesn’t mean he “doesn’t want to compete.” He’s gonna go somewhere else and compete there.

And given how long a rope they gave Evers last year when it was clear Fagnano gave us the best chance to win, I don’t have blind faith that they both gave welliver a real shot and made the right decision.

Not panicking, in today’s college football gonna be very difficult for us to recruit a qb out of high school and develop them while also winning. And better recruits than welliver have turned out to not be good college players. But to me this is still bad news

Was Tucker McD 100% healthy his spring? Any chance Tucker was pushing Welliver out of 3rd spot?

The only thing that burns about this was how how they kept starting Evers even though it was clear that Fagnano was #1. It makes me question someone’s judgement or reasoning.

It will be funny if Cole ends up where I think he might. Not the good kind of funny.

I wish this was not happening but you can not blame him. As someone said above he probably wants to get on the field somewhere and show what he has so he can maximize his future value. You will not do that in the 3QB position and maybe mot even in 2QB position. I wanted this recruit to be a homerun for us but not being around the team and not understanding all the dynamics I trust this was best for all involved. Hope he lands somewhere good dor him and plays well.

According to the yard he was by far the best QB we had in the spring that he was basically named the starter for this season by fall camp of last yr. Instead of sticking it out for more than a yr the kid high tailed it instead of competing. Once again not a big loss.

All the coaches can control is making sure they’re playing the guy maximizing the team’s chances to win in any given year. If someone else isn’t good enough, no matter what the fan base thought of him based on recruiting ranking and offers, so be it. If someone is going to be good enough but isn’t willing to wait, it’s what it is.

Get the best players you can, pick the best ones to put on the field and win games. That’s all you can do at the moment.

Exactly right.

Building depth will be very hard in the current portal environment, especially for a program like UCONN.

In fairness, Jim has never coached before and is beholden to the boosters.

Our returning QB threw only 4 picks last year. He wasn't going to lose his job. I wonder if Cole was told he wasn't going to get any NIL this season because chances are he wasn't going to play. Teams can't afford to carry non-productive assets despite the promise.
