Providence Post Game Thread

Is that guy that looked like a 40 year old accountant still on the team?
AARP’d out, but now there’s a balding PC guy with a hybrid Friar do with a starter redneck mullet attempt. Guy only hit three 3s before last night, then mullet Friar shoots out of his gourd with ¥#£&€ three more 3s.

Is this rhetorical or are you actually asking me? I have no idea who you're talking about
Came to mind as a kid that could have left as a frosh and came back for soph year to a bad USC team. Looks like he came back an extra year to be more "ready" for NBA longevity. Mind you, this kid went 9th in a stacked draft when he could have gone pretty early in the weak draft a year prior. That was Steph's draft.

Do they, though? Or do they have a bunch of pretty good players, several of whom had above average games? They are 8-7 and let’s not pretend the St John’s win was over the 1996 Chicago Bulls. They are what they are.

Just my $0.02... Jones will be a pro, just an elite athlete who is starting to harness his skills. Sellers, despite not playing super well, is a really difficult cover. They have a fairly elite rim protector in Oswin. Vaacks is not far away from being a deadly scorer with his shooting and savvy. Mela is a really heady player. Edwards is very explosive and can fill it up when hot and they brought up Abe Simpson off the bench, and he filled it up. That guy averaged 12/gm in the ACC for two straight years, so there's obviously some talent there. I think Jones, Sellers, Oswin, and Vaacks will all be NBA players of varying degrees. Are there any other rosters in the BE that have that collection of talent?

This is basically the third time this year they have scored 100 points and lost. They obviously do not defend particularly well, have very little depth up front, and they make continual poor decisions down the stretch, both player and coach. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they finish second in the BE. It also wouldn't surprise me if they end up as a .500 team.

And he hit 53 3's last year, averaged over 12/gm at GTech last year, and had scored almost 1000 points in his college career. Grandpa can obviously play.

I went into the game saying Providence has a few NBA players and Hurley said after the game Providence has a few NBA players. They're 8-7 because of terrible coaching not because of their talent.
Even if it’s true, they are lacking in the rest of the lineup. I think people are reading way too much into a game where we were pretty unfocused for 30 minutes and they played way over their heads. Then at crunch time PC panicked and we did not. Great job by the guys in blue. And as I said St John’s ain’t getting confused with the Michael Jordan Bulls any time soon. Good win by PC but hardly a season defining one. An NIT team beats an NCAA 9 seed. Big whoop! Happens all the time.

Tarris continues to amaze. 8-13 and still missed two, tree bunnies.

for some reason Peacock and Hulu constantly buffer for us - all the other apps are fine.
Hulu did that for me as well, I then switched to YouTube tv and it has been excellent. Never once has it buffered. But peacock always lags.

No not wrong at all. In fact, you were like the 3rd or fourth person to confirm it.
Oh got it. I did preface my post with that but the posts were flying left and right in this thread so it took me an hour to get to the end. Figured I’d post before I got to the end.

He just talks way too much. I know its is his job, but it sometimes seems he's doing it just to hear himself talk.
Donny would be more listenable for me if he spoke more about what’s happening on the court and a whole lot less of about stories from his playing days at UConn. I’ve heard Calhoun, Donyell, Ray Allen, etc story over and over and over and over…and over again. And Fanta unfortunately keeps priming that pump.

When Donnie and Fanta are focused on what’s happening on the court they’re good. Unfortunately that feels like about 25% of the time.

I kind of stopped listening after a while, Donny and Fanta are a tough combination.
Best line was when Donnie said guys are stepping out of bounds cause they were used to the SMALLER high school court! Even if the courts were smaller ( I'm pretty certain they're not) it would have the opposite effect, wouldn't it?

I noted that too. The most generous interpretation I could make to contort that statement into making some sense at face value is this: the three point arc is smaller in high school, leaving proportionally greater space between the sideline and three point line - so freshman who are used to taking corner threes from farther behind the line find themselves out of bounds in college.

No idea if that’s what he meant and he just failed to articulate it or if he was just saying words lol but I personally do enjoy both Donny and Fanta.

You rang?

That 50 yr old bald guy just doubled his 3pt shots for the year

Thank you for bringing Powell's hair up because it was distracting me all night! Head's a puzzle and his barber could only figure out the edge pieces.

Carrying on a long history of horrific hair in Friartown.

I’m on a flight so I just rewatched the entire game. People talk about English not being a good coach. Perfect example was UConn’s last possession in OT. Demary had the ball up top dribbling and Fanta said English was asking his assistants who they should foul while the clock is ticking down. He never got an answer so they didn’t foul. Shouldn’t the head coach know enough about another conference team to know the answer to that? Demary didn’t pass the ball so it didn’t matter but still. Those things matter in close games.

Anyone now experiencing that they can't pause/rewind the live games on Peacock? Always have been able to rewind at least a little ways back or pause the game but limited ability to do so lately. Same with the Arsenal/Liverpool game today.

I have an odd feeling that the games they are simulcasting on the NBC Sports Channel have lost the ability to do it because they are probably playing the broadcast on Hulu now. No idea.

In defense of English (who I think is a bad coach) I'm not really sure what Fanta was talking about there. I suppose it's possible that's what he was saying but with a 9 second difference on the shot and game clock down 3 every team in the country is playing that out and not fouling

I was thinking the same. But that’s what Fanta was saying so I believed him. If English was thinking he was going to foul then maybe that’s more evidence English is a bad coach.

I think he meant that the 3 point line is smaller also, and I also enjoy listening to Donny

Shout out to John Fanta for his Emmy award winning commentary at the end. Love his enthusiasm and great lines which come out the best when fantastic plays are being made at exciting moments.
“Reed! The big bear found the last jar of honey!” Lol.

Also, “Karaban! An answer from Captain All-America!”

Gotta love the enthusiasm at least. Sort of a next-gen Gus Johnson.

I feel like something needs to be said about the AMP as a venue. It’s a decent Home Court environment, but other than that, it’s objectively terrible. Not having been in a while, I forgot how bad it is Picture all of the worst things about whatever we want to call the Hartford Civic Center on steroids. Narrow concourses, insufficient number of bathrooms, terrible concessions, hollow sound, a small video board, no visibility of in game stats, and the gentle incline makes it so that any seat in the upper section seems a mile away from the court. Everything about the place screams small time.

Isn't that appropriate for the program?

Maybe if they had a mascot that looked like he just escaped prison
I'm talking about the haircut. Escaped prison? What a weird take on a basketball player who looked normal except for his haicut out there.

Fanta-Donny
I turned off the sound.
Fanta is fun.
I expect Donny, given his experience to be more analytical, providing perspective that only a guy with his experience would have. He seems much more conversational, wanting to hear himself talk. Also, seems like he can't help but be the "anti-homer" with regards to UConn(although he has gotten better. Love Donny the ex UConn player, but he seems to detract from the experience of watching a UConn game.

Not sure why so many of y’all dislike Donny. I prefer him over most other color commentators that do our games. It’s always cool when Stewart plays well when Donny is commentating.
I think it's partially the pairing with Fanta, who I really like, but they are both a bit over-enthusiastic and it's a bit much. Donny sounds better when paired with a drier, all-business play by play guy.
